Geek Girl (2024)
The existence of life on Mars would be more believable
As the mother of a model with an anxiety disorder, who began modeling at 16, I can tell you that this is pure absurdity. I enjoy fantasy series if they are done correctly. It's not the cliches that got me either; some of those things are true. They are cliches for a reason. The idea behind the story is appealing, but the script was poor, and casting of the lead actress was so far off that it was never going to be believable. She does not have the height or the features of a runway model. Also a runway walk is anything but natural, and it takes a lot of time and practice. To think she was plucked out of the blue and walked in a major runway show in 2 days is preposterous. I was never convinced why a major designer would've been so obsessed with her either. The Princess Diaries is a perfect example of a similar, but well-done YA fantasy, both for the script and the casting of Anne Hathaway, who they actually do transform from homely and awkward to beautiful and graceful. The one thing I did like was the portrayal of bullying in high school. As for the rest, do yourself a favor and skip this one.
One and Two (2015)
No resolution
Where is the rest of the script? It's so strange. There were many questions raised, and most remained unanswered. Where the film ends should have been a transition point, but it just stops, and the credits roll. It held my interest, but I have to agree with other reviewers who asked "what was the point?" I found the cinematography to be dark, often hard to see what was going on. There was so much more that could've, and should've been done . It feels like such a waste. I thought all of the actors did a good job, so if you are a fan of any of them it might be worth your time. Other than that, don't bother.
Single All the Way (2021)
Super cute!
I liked this movie much more than I thought I would. Yes, it's a cheesy Christmas movie, but as someone with lactose intolerance, I can tell you it's much less cheesy than the movies on Hallmark channel!
Christmas at Castle Hart (2021)
No Chemistry
The casting leaves a lot to be desired. The two lead actresses play sisters and look nothing alike. The romantic duo in the film have zero chemistry. Their ten year age gap is a little bit of a stretch, but what makes it worse is that Lacey Chabert looks younger than she is, and Stuart Townsend looks older. Perceived age difference aside, the chemistry just isn't there. Aside from Chabert, none of the performances really stand out. The story just plodded along, with no real highs or lows. I like the actors and love Ireland so stuck it out, but I won't waste my time watching it again next year. As far as Hallmark movies go, this ranks among my least favorite.
Never Have I Ever (2020)
Great writing, terrible casting.
I really enjoyed this series. The writing is awesome and the lead actress is perfect. That said, the casting people did a horrible job. Not only is the rest of the acting mediocre, but the other actors look wayyyy too old to be believable high school students. Kudos to Mindy Kaling for making this show so entertaining that I am willing to put up with the rest.
Grey's Anatomy: Sign O' the Times (2021)
Nothing but propaganda.
There is a fair and accurate way to include current political issues in episodes, but the writers and show runners don't even attempt to show both sides of the story. They just shove their progressive narrative down our throats. I used to love this show. I binge watched every season again while quarantined. This entire season has been all about politics. The few non-political story lines are boring and dragging on. I'm done.
Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry (2021)
Raw and real.
I am a 56 year old mom and have been captivated by Billie since I first heard Ocean Eye's. I watched this because I wanted to know more about her. I wound up seeing my own daughter's struggles reflected in Billie's. I teared up more than once. This documentary (aside from watching this amazing artist) showed me that as parents we need to be more in touch. Our children are dealing with a lot these days, and it's so important to validate their feelings and individualism. Their mental health is at stake. I'm so thankful for Billie's willingness to share her vulnerability with us.
Holidate (2020)
Just what I needed
This movie had a lot of good laugh-out-loud moments, which I haven't done in a long time. My only criticism is that the ending was totally cheesy. But otherwise, a very enjoyable film.
