Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Worthy but too long and a little dull
After an hour I turned to my partner and whispered 'isn't this a little dull?' And realised he was asleep. The set-ups are much too long; there is little chemistry between the characters (very hard to remember who is who) , you could drive a tank through the plot inconsistencies... all would be forgiven in a 100 minute movie but this one goes on forever. Clearly it is primarily a set-up for the next two, but that does hot excuse the lack of excitement (apart from a couple of great but too short sequences). All in all a disappointment... Time would be better spent rewatching the previous superb trilogy!
The Creator (2023)
Beautifully made and.touching movie
A lot of reviewers have focussed on how derivative the movie is and how the story has too many logical leaps. Having rewatched it both criticisms are valid but do not do it justice. Taken on its own terms The Creator is visually stunning and had a sweet love story at its heart. The little girl is particularly impressive. Just sit back and enjoy it, you won't be disappointed. I also recommend checking out the director's earlier sci-fi movie Monsters which I don't believe many people heard about. Despite it being shot for apparently no money at all it is also beautifully made and surprisingly touching.
Wifelike (2022)
Pretty average, but I still watched to the end..,
An interesting mishmash of ideas ((although nothing original) badly let down by an inadequate budget and some shockingly leaden acting. The notable exception is Elena Kampouris who is very convincing as an AI slowly developing awareness. Otherwise random shots of Dubai to represent a futuristic city and stock Blade Runner visuals simply reinforce what might have been with more money, a tighter script and better acting. We could also have done without a lot of (not very interesting) exposition.
Watch Ex Machina instead if you want to see how this should be done (although as several reviewers have mentioned, this movie features more lingerie!).
Dune (2021)
Magnificent
I don"t need to repeat everything that's been said. Go and see Dune on IMAX if you can, awe-inspiring.
Only minor gripe.. music, whilst often superb, sometimes is way too dramatic vs what is happening on the screen, and as so often with Zimmer it's hard to know where the music stops and the sound effects start.
Still, Dune will remind you why going to the cinema is such fun.
