Begotten (1989)
Expressionist Cinema
This is my subjective take on the film, my personal opinions, and a sort of justification on why I absolutely love this film
I collect music, I'm a huge fan of material that has similar aesthetics to this. Dark, dirty, and disturbing. So usually the first thing on my mind is, "will this obscure noisy drone cassette from the 1980s fit along this film"
I'll lay down, just let the images flash on the screen, and turn my brain off. This is such a unique film that brings me such a unique warmth, and sense of inspiration, especially as an artist.
The biblical themes are great, the characters are great.
Every now and then a really ethereal sound comes on the screen and you can hear wildlife at night... this film can be extremely brutal or extremely meditative.
There's a good world building, and this film feels like an artifact that was unearthed. Like a piece of an old culture. I think there should be more films like it. Films that feel alien and esoteric.
Still Smokin (1983)
What happened
I was really getting into the movie, the real movie lasts about 30 minutes. After that, the foreshadowing begins. Tommy Chong does black face, and then it's just skits. It's like they gave up, not even half way through. I was so bored I had to start skipping scenes, the movie ended before anything started up again.
Would I recommend the beginning of the film? Yeah, it's well shot, has good energy, and I enjoyed what there was. But I can't forgive this film for not just being another Cheech And Chong movie. I loved every film I've seen so far, up to this point, but the last parts have aged awfully and just feel mean spirited and distracting from the chemistry between Cheech And Chong.
Uncle Goddamn (2004)
Odd film but enjoyable
This is the type of film that almost borders on exploitive. It has moments that are mean spirited and it can be boring for someone not entirely invested in the atmosphere of the movie... but I'd say that this film would work wonders alongside some Harmony Korine project from a parallel universe that takes place in a trailer park in North Carolina.
Aesthetically speaking, this is just a really gritty and unique film. For a film with this energy, it can be pretty tame for the most part, and some scenes just stick out, breaking up the repetition.
You'll have to go into this movie knowing what to expect. It's a group of people pranking each other and yelling at a camera. It's poor quality VHS footage, and it seems like the filler of a Korine film like Gummo. Knowing all of that, do you want to really watch this? If so, I think you'll be pretty comfortable in this film. It's really niche and I really enjoy watching this on rare occasions
