Ariel Phenomenon (2022)
One of those shows everyone should see.
Anyone who likes documentaries or has an interest in UFOs or anyone who breaths air will find this show interesting.
Unlike many UFO shows/series/documentaries it avoids a spooky movie theme. Instead it focuses on how this 1994 event affected the people who were there.
It is the first 10/10 I've ever given.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Well made but you must ignore the dumb things.
The overall movie is of decent quality. If they could skim out the silly things that people in those situations would avoid you'd have a higher quality movie. Here are some examples.
1) They walk around with bare feet when most any soft soled foot ware would work just fine.
2) They carry nothing to toss and make sound as a distraction like a few pebbles.
3) If the latch on the furnace might trap someone inside just disable it so it cannot latch. Stuff something into the strike so the latch can't fall in. Lay the towel over that so it is quiet.
Things like this break a movie for me.
The Signal (2014)
Glad I watched it.
I enjoy a good sci-fi and The Signal has a lot going for it. The scenes are not rushed and they're well edited. The soundtrack was nice too.
If you're looking for where the movie is lacking it's probably the story telling. There's not a lot of explaining going on so knowing what going on and why is not talked about much. You get to see what's happening at the time and that's it. Lucky for me I like that in a movie.
The Old Guard (2020)
They skimped on production
I can tell the actors did the best they could. They had a good idea for a story. Sadly though the script and production suffered for some reason. Not all the time but too often it has the feel of the last (2015) Fantastic Four movie. They easily could have done better.
Australien skies (2015)
Not a good early impression
A documentary that I feel spends too much time explaining how the documentary was made tends to turn me off quick. I'm not really interested in listing to a 'making of a documentary' documentary when it's not titled as such.
Australia has a rich history of UFO reports and I was expecting to hear about the Knowles family encounter, Westall event, and others I might have missed out on.
This show is not my thing.
Busanhaeng (2016)
One of the better "zombie" movies!
I love zombies. I don't love the constant stupid decisions of characters in zombie movies that allow everything to descend into chaos. Train to Busan lacks a lot of the stupid found in most zombie movies while still providing drama, kind emotional moments and terror!
The infected are done so well! I've never seen snarling, ratcheting, flesh devouring fiends portrayed with such skin crawling realism.
Highly recommended for zombie fans. Do watch in original language with subtitles if you need them.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
I haven't seen it yet. Here is why.
Star Wars: The last Jedi. This movie had good stuff in it but let me down in so many other ways. I'm not going to feed the poor writing in more Star Wars movies with my ticket money. If you're looking for what I mean just search YouTube for things wrong with Star Wars: The Last jedi.
When I do see this movie I'll come back and update my review.
A Quiet Place (2018)
good watch but has flaws
A well made thriller/sci-fi. I wish a lot more USA movies were made similarly.
It has problems in the same area as "Annihillation". People do unnecessary things to allow people to die or skip somewhat obvious solutions to allow people to die. It's kind of like watching a bull fight with 100 idiot bullfighters in the ring all dressed in red. None of them have a muleta and nobody takes off a red shirt to use as a distraction. They could also climb over the wall to escape but chose not to. But it's done well so it's fun to watch.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Marvel needs to keep their characters true and watch sloppy writing.
Infinity War is a good super hero movie. But I thought Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther were better.
Marvel has a problem with level and types of power of the super heroes in their movies.
1) if a battle between the Hulk and Thor in Ragnarok nearly destroy an arena made for super powered combat I'm pretty sure Hulk vs Thanos in a spaceship would last one punch.
2) Star-lord is just a dude, he does not catch and hold Spider-man.
3) If Tony Stark can have dozens of flying robot iron men helping to fight bad guys in Iron Man 3 why not have 100s of them to help in Waconda? I'm sure War Machine would have access to activate them.
4) If Scarlet Witch can pickup and drop 1000 ton alien attack blades near Wakonda why do 2 dudes in Scotland give her a hard time?
5) Steve Rogers isn't invulnerable. When swarmed by alien soldiers with sharp claws and teeth he's apparently unharmed after Thor's hammer clears the baddies away. They had time to rip Steve up but didn't?
Don't take the easy way out when writing the story. A lot of it was good but some of it was not. Writing poorly can break suspension of disbelief.
1) When an elaborate plan pins Thanos in order to remove his gauntlet so he can't DESTROY THE UNIVERSE nobody would stop to talk to Thanos about anything until that gauntlet is removed and someplace safe. At the very least you shut up and HELP REMOVE THE GAUNTLET so Thanos can't destroy the UNIVERSE!
2) Gamora really thinks Thanos doesn't love her? All that time she was talking about Thanos not loving anyone made no sense. I kept thinking, Gamora, you're being really stupid, everybody knows what's going to happen... maybe you should try running or anything?
3) When Thor arrives at Wakonda he apparently can crush 100s of those alien baddies with one jump/smash. Banner even feels he has time to stop, open his helmet to say "You guys are so screwed now!". But when all the heroes go to protect Vision from Thanos.... Thor arrives AFTER Thanos gets the last stone?
I know I'm picking. It's because to much of these things can degrade a movie a lot and I'd rather not have anymore X-men The Last Stand or Fantastic Four (2015).
Annihilation (2018)
An okay Sci-fi thriller that you might say was pretty good
If you liked The Thing (2011) and Solaris (2002) you should like Annihilation.
What made this movie different than most are the strong female roles. I felt this was a plus. All the roles could have switched genders and been more mainstream.
Another difference is the modest use of ACTION. More of the screen time was devoted to exploring the characters and the zone inside the shimmer rather than guns blazing. I felt this was also a plus.
All around it was a good movie except for some decisions made while exploring inside the shimmer. Many american movies have characters do dumb things so someone can die. You get that here too. I tried to explain it away but it was difficult. Even so I did enjoy Annihilation.
7/10
The Mountain Between Us (2017)
Better than 6.4/10 or 48/100
I found a fair amount of negative comments in reviews on this movie. Most of them just don't seem to apply. The movie was an average-good movie that should warrant a 7.0-7.3 out of 10 here at IMDB and a matching quality score at metacritic.
As I watched the movie not much surprised me. Still it was a little better than most american movies of the same kind.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi would have worse ratings than this movie if it were held to the same standards.
If you like snowy mountains, survival situations, drama and a little romance you'll enjoy this movie.
Singularity (2017)
StinkyAirRitty
The most shocking thing about this movie is the 8/10 rating here at IMDb and the '99% liked it' at rotten tomatoes. It is really not that good.
It is low budget. Every aspect of the movie reflects this except occasionally the special effects rise up to a little better than average.
To me it appears every scene was shot once and only once. If it didn't take well they kept it anyway. The editing left a lot to be desired.
If you don't mind B movies it might be worth a viewing. Otherwise stay away from it.
Life (2017)
A not so hot American SciFi Thriller
Within 20 minutes I recognized the movie style. It is much like Prometheus and many American made movies where the fantastic arises almost immediately with little build up. Also 'experts in their fields' characters repeatedly act incompetently allowing the story line to continue into chaos. The characters talked to much and several times explained how something might happen immediately followed by that exact thing happening.
This is worth seeing as a rental if you like almost B movie SciFi thrillers.
