9-1-1 (2018)
Used to be great!
Tuesdays used to be pizza and 911 night but that is changing. While I realize that in the real world 911 doesn't always save the day, the show has taken on a depressing, real life gore during my tv escape. The show used to have more of a good guys always win type vibe but now it's taking a horrifying turn just like its spin-off, Lone Star. I no longer want to watch a show that upsets me to the point of tears. The episode from 4/25 had me so upset I was sobbing uncontrollably and I don't intend to keep watching after that. Let me say I've been a loyal fan since the beginning but I won't watch such heartbreaking horror voluntarily. Good luck 911. Two viewers down in this house.
Dash & Lily (2020)
Among My Favorite Holiday Classics!
This single season show has been added to our traditional Christmas watchlist. We were really hoping for additional seasons but sadly Netflix released another fantastic show and then dropped it after one season. However, the first season is one book in itself so don't let this stop you from watching! It's wonderful!
Hawaii Five-0: A'ole e 'olelo mai ana ke ahi ua ana ia (2017)
Another show destroyed by lost chemistry!
This is the first episode without Chin and Kono. Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park came on this show as the two most well-known team members of Five-0 - Park from Battlestar Galactica and Kim from Lost. O'Loughlin and Caan weren't really known for anything until this show. Kim and Park simply wanted the pay that was equal to their white male counterparts. But the powers that be refused and so shattered the successful chemistry of this amazing show. And, as we've seen many times, once you screw with the chemistry of a hit show, there's an explosion in the chemistry lab. People of color are notoriously paid less than their white counterparts in the film industry (and elsewhere) even if they may be the ones people are tuning in or paying to watch. It's ridiculous and unfair. But as I write this, Park and Kim are enjoying great success post Five-0 while the show only lasted 3 more seasons after their departures. I have deep respect for both Park and Kim to be willing to leave when CBS was unwilling to properly and fairly negotiate their salaries.
The Amazing Race: Run on Your Tippy Toes (2020)
Two horrible gnomes...
William and James worked hard to destroy season 32 and easily accomplished that task. They weren't physically strong and nor were they intellectually superior with the right amount of common sense and street smarts and knowledge of the race to win. However, they made up for their shortcomings, by manipulating four other teams to pull together the largest, most dangerous alliance in TAR history to suck on their strengths and protections so they could slide right into the top three like a kid skipping line while flipping off the other kids and not getting caught. I hope NO TEAM from this alliance is ever invited back. In fact, I would love to see this race run again without the alliance and more physical tasks (seems like they took it easy on the boys) and see what kind of an outcome we would have then. As for how season 32 actually went, if TAR doesn't add some rules to cut this kind of action off at the knees, people will stop watching. I know I will. William and James didn't come in to play their hardest. They came in to use every loophole and beat the game itself. Those loopholes must now be closed because of two brats with no respect for the game.
The Amazing Race: Now It's About Winning (2020)
Worst Season Ever!!!!!
I've watched every season of TAR but to see one vicious team (W & J) manipulate four other teams into a five team alliance and take down all other teams one by one took the fun out of this season. On other seasons, we've seen teams slip an answer to another team here and there to help them out but on this season we see this FIVE TEAM ALLIANCE literally cheat their way through the repelling roadblock. The first team figures out the answer and passes the answer to the other four teams. How is that fair? They also "helped" each other more than should be allowed on some of the other detours/roadblocks and targeted non-alliance teams with u-turns and yields until they were gone. When an alliance manages to knock out six other teams Production needs to step in and make some new rules because the size of the alliance and sharing answers to that degree affected gameplay. Essentially, this alliance coming together at the beginning and targeting the other six teams assured they were the last five standing when it came to that point. Alliances are fun and make the show interesting but not to this extreme and not when there is blatant cheating and manipulation involved. So, enjoy your million dollars. You didn't win or make it to the top five and then three and then one because you were the best racers. You made it there because you played dirty and will probably go down in race history as the cause of new rules being put in place to prevent a repeat of this season. Nice thing to be remembered for. In fact, if you Google season 32, there are mostly negative comments about you from the producers and upset fans. Good job. 👍🏼
Supergirl: The Bodyguard (2020)
Great Episode Though Misunderstood
The Lex plot is still tiresome and though Lena he has been convinced she is helping mankind, it appears more like she is being held hostage by her brother and doing his bidding and doesn't even realize it. I agree that the VR world is as addictive as any drug, is unhealthy, and is becoming a villian unto itself. Is it being used to create minions for Lex, Leviathon, or both? As for Kara and William, lets give it a rest, ok? At first, I thought this was an odd couple. Why? I'm Team Mon-El like most people but let's be realistic. He's gone and Kara needs to move on with her life. And does the fandom not remember Back From the Future: Part Two? Kara had decided to go out with William in that episode. She literally walked up to his desk intending to say yes but he gave her the puzzle for her grandmother and she realized she would have to begin the relationship with a lie so she turned him down. It wasn't because she didn't like him. And he was very respectful (though confused) when she turned him down and very kind to her after. When she went out with him later, she simply changed her mind. We all have a right to do that and how many of you HAVE actually DONE that?! She wasn't forced. And also, let's consider Melissa Benoist's recent confession regarding IPV. She participated in the Women's March in Washington. She has worn "Feminist" t-shirts. I believe she would never participate in writing that would compromise her personal belief system to that degree and especially regarding that subject matter. You people who keep accusing the writers of pushing a "forced" or "sexual harassment" agenda are wrong, IMO. And I also think the accusations disrespect the show and Melissa Benoist in general.
Supergirl: Reality Bytes (2020)
Wow! Amazing Episode!
One of the things I love about this show is the inclusion it always strives to have as a theme. No matter what else is going on, everyone is accepted and loved (unless you're the bad guy). Even then, the good guys believe there is good in everyone so they don't kill. I think the theme of inclusion is solid because, hey, Supergirl, J'ohnn, and Brainy are aliens and there are others sprinkled throughout the show. Alex is a part of the LGBTQ Community. Now we have Dreamer who is Trans and also and a part of the LGBTQ Community along with her roommate, Yvette. I think it's amazing that the writers composed an episode that focused on this Community and the challenges that they face. They need a special kind of Superhero and understanding. And no one knew what Dreamer and her Community was going through... the pain and misunderstanding until this episode. It was important so that the fandom knew her better. And it is painfully clear from the reviews I'm reading here that there is a lot of hate that is still directed at the LGBTQ Community, which is EXACTLY why episodes like this are necessary. How sad that so many of you hold so much hate in your heart. This is still Supergirl with her amazing friends and family... Supergirl the show with its love, optimism, hope, and inclusion for ALL. Why would any of you want anyone to be left out of such a beautiful "Dream".
Billy Boy (2017)
Torn
There were two reasons I watched this movie. The first was to see Melissa Benoist exercise her acting chops in something a bit darker after seeing her in Glee and Supergirl - not that Marley and Kara are the same but something with a little less sunshine. She delivered in this role as she always does. It appears that no matter what it thrown her way, she bats it out of the park... incredible actress. The second reason I watched it is simply because I love indie movies and I found it on Amazon. While not a fan of Blake Jenner, it was apparent he had no problem accessing his anger as an actor and using it to get many of his points across, which was interesting to see after what's been on the news lately. But the primary theme of the movie, as I perceived it, was that quite often no matter how hard you want to change the people around you often won't let you. They shove you into a box, wrap it in tape, and mark it with a sharpie and now matter how much you claw and contort yourself you often can never break out of that box that others have trapped you in. The main character in this movie wanted to change. He wanted out of the gang he was in. He wanted the beautiful girlfriend and the normal life. But no one would allow him to leave his past behind and change except Jennifer. However, she had to protect her own boundaries and rightfully so when Billy put her family in danger. The theme of the movie is a true statement about humanity... about our society. Friendships... relationships often fall apart when one person tries to improve in some way. Other people involved will try to sabotage or, if you're lucky, you will find someone to grow with you. Billy was not so lucky. His friends wanted him to fall with them. So he did... and he took some really good people with him. I won't lie. This movie took 3 hours for me to get through. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen. Melissa Benoist did a great job and, like I said, though sad, the theme will hit home for a lot of people.
Glee: The Quarterback (2013)
Sad... but missing one thing
This was a heartbreaking episode. But one thing was glaringly obvious. Quinn was missing. Why? It was never explained though some information found on the web stated Lea Michele did not want her to return. True? Only the diva knows. Perhaps some people didn't notice her absence as no excuses were made. But with her being one of the original cast members and having a strong history with Finn, her absence left a hole in the episode. While it's nice that they focused on his life instead of the cause of his death, I do think they should have popped some sort of crisis number at the end for people who need help breading their addiction to drugs. No, they didn't explain the cause of Finn's death. But Cory Monteith's death made headlines and the reason was clear. This said, millions of fans related strongly to his character, and some may have benefited from that information being provided on the screen at the end of the episode.
Glee (2009)
Is this the Lea Michele show?
The musical numbers are great and I love that the show addresses touchy topics, such as LGBTQ issues, mental health awareness, such as eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and child molestation, school shootings, internet safety, teen pregnancy, death, etc. But some of this gets overshadowed by creating a platform to showcase the talents of the original cast members, most notably Lea Michele. Once much of the original cast graduated and a new class came in they were never allowed to shine as brightly as they should have because the original cast still got the majority of the screen time, especially Lea Michele. So, the newbies were eventually written off as the show was moved to New York because it "just wasn't working". Gee, I wonder why. Melissa Benoist, Jacob Artist, Alex Newell, Becca Tobin, and Blake Jenner (who I hate to mention but he was there so, oh well) did a fantastic job breathing new life into the now practically empty glee club. Kudos to them for being awesome and shining in the shadows cast by producers who didn't appreciate the jewels they had discovered.
