Darkest Hour (2017)
One man movie
As the title to my review suggests, it's pretty much a Gary Oldman movie. He's literally elevated this movie alone, not exaggerating any other actor wouldn't have such an amazing job with Churchill although you have accomplished actors like John Lithgow in the Crown Series excelled. But when it comes to the movie Darkest Hour I don't think Lithgow would have done as good as Oldman. Personally I like the acting of Oldman than the movie itself. Anyone aspiring to become an actor or even a director need to watch this movie to witness the magnificence of an actor in the caliber of Gary Oldman. 8 out of 10 achieved because of Oldman brilliance.
The Wrong Missy (2020)
Goofy Comedy
David Spade is one of my favorite B-list comedians, this movie as any of his movies got some moments of comic relief but all in all it's not that much of movie. It's pretty predictable comedy that won't enrich you as viewer. I gave it 6 out of 10 because of David Spade but other than that it's a dull film.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Best Super Hero Movie
It's by far one of the best movies I've seen. And the best done by Marvel Studios. Authencity and respect to the original comic books are evident and gives the movie more power. The 10-year celebration for the release of the first Marvel movie certainly was filled with fireworks and an ensemble cast that you will never witness in the history of any superhero movie starting with the powerful Titan and human Thanos portrayed by a captivating performance from Josh Brolin.
The Promise (2016)
The Promise : Empire attempt to wipe an entire nation
In the last few weeks before the release of the movie worldwide and Lebanon, there was a lot of discussions how the movie through ratings via IMDb & Rotten Tomatoes being hijacked by thousand of reviewers through very low ratings with the majority not writing a single note on the movie. For the reason mentioned and the fact that I was invited by AFHIL (Armenian Fund For Health Insurance in Lebanon) through a friend, I had to go and judge for myself.
Usually, I care a lot about ratings but this time I had to ignore because the movie wasn't given chance and in my mind, because I understood that this act by Turkish influenced reviewers is a second attempt to diminish importance of what happened 102 years ago & erase a nation's right from the history books. So I was not deterred by 4/10 rating or the rotten status on both mentioned sites. In an approximately 2 hours 10 minutes, there was not a second of boredom in the film. I will go into little deeply & briefly in explaining certain aspects of making a good film. In any film especially a feature film there're few things that complement each other without one the movie is a failure. In the case of "The Promise" had the storytelling attributes & a well struck script, the director who is the project manager of this feature was in control & in my opinion he excelled, the cast was almost flawless although Christian Bale had by far had better roles from the Batman series, American psycho, and other parts nevertheless he was on top of his game. Oscar Isaac portrayal of the Armenian living under the Turkish rule was overwhelming and authentic, especially during his emotional outburst while witnessing the tragedy of his people and family. Charlotte LeBon as an actress was new to me but she as well nailed in her performance. The production from small details to the biggest either makes it or break it and here they were spot on. At the end of the day, it's a dramatic love story with historical influences and no matter what you do someone will criticize. The most important elements to a good movie were evident the story, cast, production, directing, & crew. Would I say it's a masterpiece? No, but it's a movie I recommend everyone to watch, open their heart & eyes to fully grasp this major production that highlights an important & tragic part in the history of the Armenian nation and Armenians scattered all over the world because the aggression of an arrogant empire and until our days the same entity is not even conceding of the atrocities occurred by their predecessors.
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
Transformers: Two hours & half of pure boredom
I was very excited to watch the movie, especially it had the legendary Anthony Hopkins, but I was really disappointed. First of all the plot is terrible & repeatable. The acting is less than adequate. As for the special effects, it's nothing new for the Transformers series. So let's talk about the plot like previous movies it's the ultimate battle to bring the home planet of the aliens (The Transformers) to replace the earth nothing new here. And the lucky heroes that going to save the planet are casual civilians go figure and their backup is special ops and some Autobots lead by Optimus as usual. The thing that I felt was really ridiculous is the need to connect to old England with always mythical figure of King Arthur and his knights and inclusion of Stanley Tucci in this humorous way wasn't really a stroke of genius from Michael Bay more like a Box Office thing same with Sir Anthony Hopkins although I love the acting of the man been rusty on some of the scenes and probably the fault of the director, honestly. In general, it's a movie I wouldn't advise to pay a nickel to go and watch.
Masterminds (2015)
Wacky moments are needed sometimes in cinema
When recently was approached by my friends to go and watch Masterminds first thing I usually do I check rate sites such as the one am writing on(IMDb) and rotten tomatoes both obviously had bad reviews especially the latter. To be honest, my expectations were very low , I know I wasn't expecting Leslie Nielsen of naked gun series or Peter Sellers of Pink Panther Series style or even near come on those two were on top of physical comedy. I can say this comedy role in our lives is to make us laugh even if it was a silly laugh and this what Masterminds did, probably it's not piece of cup for the fans of Chaplin,Laurel & Hardie,Jacque Tati,Sellers or Nielsen but when a movie keeps making you laugh out load it's pretty decent even if it lacks artistic part of cinema but sometimes wacky moments in cinema are needed to forget problems of the now and the tomorrow. For me, if you are planning to forget what's bothering you go watch it.
The Magnificent Seven (2016)
Chris Pratt only positive outcome
The movie was utterly disappointing, the screenplay of this version was week and choices of the casting was in some roles below par, like the actor who played the villain is lame he strikes me as a follower for the bad guy. And choosing billy character to be Asian to honor Akira Kurosawa probably backfired. Apar from Chris Pratt who was good the rest of the cast was average at most. Also the deaths style of goodnight ,billy, and the big guy were extremely disastrous and unworthy of the magnificent seven name. All of the seven in addition to the villain had big shoes to fill and all except for Chris Pratt who owned the role failed miserably.
