Mortal Engines (2018)
Stunning visuals and some interesting elements, but it's not enough
The CGI and the cinematography can be stunning at times, which is none more apparent than in the opening. Fast paced, thrilling, and gripping. A lot of the action scenes are similar in terms of thrills, which is great. Every setting and every machine look amazing.
Shrike is also another fantastic element of the film. A character who somehow manages to be both endearing and unnerving with an interesting (if a little short) and emotional arc to boot. Unfortunately, that about wraps up all that is great about this film.
The plot is coherent and easy to follow, but perhaps a bit too easy. As the film goes on you can already begin to guess what "shocking" moment is about to come next. With the exception of Shrike, hardly any of the characters are developed beyond their stereotypes. Tough girl who can take care of herself. The boy with a heart of gold. The evil old man. The mangy scavengers. Some characters are introduced in the opening act and presented as if they hold some importance to the plot, but eventually they disappear without a trace. Not really sure if it's the actors or the material they had to work with, but it's hard to feel anything for any character, even when the film implies that the audience should be feeling something.
Replicas (2018)
A Compendium of Sci-Fi Clichés
There are a couple things with this film that are okay. Some scenes are creatively shot and lit - though these scenes are few and far between - and at times the score can be decent. And Thomas Middleditch's performance is actually alright.
Do I sound vague? That's because there's honestly nothing more I can say about this film, because the rest of it is god awful. I like Keanu Reeves as an actor but somehow in this film he's nothing more than a hunk of word that occasionally spouts science terminology and pouts. A lot of the other actors are no better.
Awful acting aside, this film is quite literally a compendium of every single sci-fi film on the planet. If can think of anything to do with sci-fi, quite literally anything at all, it's in this film. Robots? Check. Cyborgs? Check. Cloning? Check. Holograms? Check. Question the ethics of science? Check. There are many more clichés but I'd be touching spoiler territory if I listed them all. And I'm sure you already get the point. It gets to a point where you just tune yourself out of the film because you already know what's going happen. It's boring beyond belief and yet somehow so frustrating with its lack of creativity.
Honestly, it's so hard to write anything about this film because there's nothing to talk about. It's boring, it's annoying, it's nothing new, and you'd be better off avoiding it.
Wrecked (2016)
A fun comedy that's good for some giggles but no gut busting laughs
If you're someone who appreciates dark humour then I can definitely recommend this show to you. It features a cast of colourful and memorable characters whose reactions to the dramatic, dark and humorous twists of being stranded on an island never ceases to entertain.
A variety of topics are touched upon in this show, ranging from the serious to the downright hilarious, all of which never really feel "forced", are discussed only when necessary, and never dragged out to be long or boring.
Why a 7 and not a 10? Admittedly, this a show that's designed to push the envelope, especially with the quick pacing of the episodes and the occasional controversial topics that it discusses (e.g. Are you a bad person for killing someone who openly supports the prejudice and discrimination of an entire race of people but has otherwise committed no crime?). It never fully goes 'all the way' with these topics and never ends these discussions in a memorable, satisfying or comical manner, resulting in the occasional giggle as the joke is being delivered but a gratifying conclusion being quelled with predictable jokes, puns, or even nothing at all.
That being said though, the occasional flat delivery of jokes isn't enough for me to turn anyone away form this show. If you're interested in this show then I'd definitely recommend watching a few episodes.
The Nursery (2018)
Not just bad, but incredibly boring
The plot is cliche and boring with characters who are completely by-the-book and forgettable. I've just finished watching the film and I can't remember a single characters name. You've got the good girl with a sad past, the tough best friend, the blonde ditz, the sex-crazed douche, and the geek.
The actors are also some of the worst. They all speak in a really monotonous voice and hardly ever show emotion. There's a scene where someone is being stabbed and all they do is moan like someone is trying to wake them up.
Also, a lot of the action / intense horror scenes are paced really slowly and are just boring. There's a scene where a girl is being chased into a room, she closes the door and holds it shut while the pursuer tries to pull it open. It goes on for far too long with an almost comedic amount of back and forth shots between the girl and the doorknob. Every single 'intense' scene is shot like this.
Not to mention, I don't think there's a single original score or sound effect in this entire film, it's all stock. If you've ever played a cheap Unity engine horror game, then you've heard every sound effect in this film. The music also has a really cheesy 80's vibe which unintentionally makes some horror scenes humorous, but still isn't enough to make any scene good.
In short, this film is just bad. It's not even 'so bad it's good' or 'good to watch with drunk friends', it's just boring, cheap, and not worth anyone's time or money.
