McDonald & Dodds: The Man Who Wasn't There (2021)

Yawn.

Jason Watkins was very good, and single handedly carried this drama in his own shoulders. It surprised me that this was brought back, two poor previous stories, with another here. It simply wasn't up to scratch, a mix of good actors and actresses, sadly none of them were able to elevate the wooly script. Won't be switching on again.

It's just not Dr Who, is it?

Once again the destroyers of Doctor Who are at it again, Chibnall serves up another lifeless story, whilst poor Jodie battles against a lackluster script. Did anyone else see the way that The Doctor and Captain Jack hugged? She looked as though she was loathsome to go anywhere near him, clearly nobody involved has any clue as to Jack's significance in the show.

The worst aspect, the awfulness of the companions, the way they all reacted, Yaz in particular, to the returning Doctor, was awful, imprisoned, not on a two week holiday in Malaga. Why have they made her the one standing companion, I wish they'd kept Ryan over her.

Jodie is leaving, and I'm not a fan, but it's Chibnall that should be moving on, she was up against a backlash, it could have been something really special, a way to silence the doubters. It's just all been so poor, this is another nail, the sooner a new regime saves this from the ashes, the better.

Macabre.

Keith Allen brings Palmer to life in this very agreeable 1998 adaptation. A man with no scruples, who played on the vulnerable for his own financial gain. I highly recommend reading up on Palmer, a very interesting character, a highly respected man, who got away with his mean crimes for so very long, because of his position of authority.

It's hard to come by, but should you get the chance to watch this, I recommend you do.

A compelling dramatisation of a notorious killer.
18 September 2020
Des is without a doubt the best drama for some time, nobody can surely deny the excellence of Tennant, I'm surprised if he doesn't scoop awards for his sincere performance.

Those that are complaining about smoking, this was based on actual texts, people used to smoke a lot. Those complaining about tension, do you have the ability to distinguish between fiction and history? Stop with the complaining.

It's interesting to see the fascination people have with serial killers. Who's next?

Doctor Who: The Timeless Children (2020)

Poor, confused, William Hartnell YOU are the original Doctor, nobody else.

Where did The TARDIS come from when the ship explodes? How did The Judoon get in the TARDIS?

Chibnall had some good ideas, but failed to make a cohesive episode out of them. Way too many plot holes here to make this any higher than a score of 5.

All I ask from those that blindly say this is excellent, please search for the definition of the word retcon, and just see if you think, as I do, that it applies to this.

Worst element - awful writing, awful companions, plot holes, The Doctor is no more Gallifreyan.

Best element - Sacha Dhawan.

Excellent and very important in the show's canon.

Review for all four episodes.

This would shape many future episodes, The Doctor and Jo, aided by UNIT on Earth battling The Master, a very strong era of the show. I liked Liz Shaw, as a companion for The Doctor she was up to him, The Doctor was definitely not an avuncular figure to Liz, he was to Jo, throughout this episode she's constantly asking who, what and why. Manning is a total joy though, innocent and fun, my favourite companion.

Delgado is terrific as The Master, together with the accompanying music, the fate that befell the poor technicians was very nasty, miniaturised and placed inside a sandwich box, who said there was no horror element in this era.

The Autons and Nestene had been wonderful in the last series, great they returned so quickly, it's only a shame it took until Rose for us to see them again. They are menacing, particularly as Police.

It's such an important four part story.
