Ivalo (2018)
The dialogue is the worst
The dialogue is heard so many times before. "i give a helicopter. just one condition. I come with you." - and the helicopter comes. This same "just one condition" conversation is used multiple times in the show. Also defiant lines, like "Who are you to decide that?" said by this softy main character who definitely doesn't have balls to say something like that.
Perhaps the problem is that non-native speakers have written the lines. They just don't fit, they are predictable and unimaginative.
A bad guy who has been tortured walks like a Frankenstein monster and snarls - in a dark hospital. Looked like a bad horror movie.
10 episodes is too much for the story. You could have fit everything in to 6-8 episodes. The plot loses track.
The best thing of the series is the nature. Beautiful snowy nature in northern Finland.
A Fall from Grace (2020)
Good story, bad execution
I really like the story and that kept me watching.
Although, many small details bothered me, which could have been easily fixed, eg. a woman sleep with bra on and obvious make-up on, and wakes up with nice hair-do. These are the small sign which show if the movie is well done - the details; if the director and other staff really cares.
The movie lacked of depth, emotions. The scenes were superficial. I didn't get the tension and thrill that this movie could have given me. I didn't get the reason why the defender was so uncomfortable and disengage to her job. It was just "glued on top". To engage the audience, they need to get the authentic characters, fixed details and believable emotions.
The Pianist (2002)
I loved it
I loved this movie and I really recommend it to all who are interested in history and human destinies. Also if you like Schidler's List, you will like this one too.
I usually don't like movies without good dialogue. This is an exception. I was so fascinated by this one that I sat still for 2,5 hours.I didn't have subtitles, but luckily I understand a bit of German, so I could follow these discussions as well. I think anyone could watch the movie without understanding German, so I hope no one has passed the movie because of that.
There were many scenes without any dialogue. Still these scenes could tell the story and were meaningful, but also interesting. The viewer is able to feel the grief that Szpilman feels during the movie - all the humiliation, starve, thirst, loosing family and so on. I found it very interesting to see how Szpilman's confidence changes during the years - how he gets kind of weaker and surviving by using his primitive instincts.
I wasn't familiar with Brody's act, but I was so impressed by it. No wonder he won the Oscar. How he changes his physical performance was amazing. He makes the viewer feel Szpilman's sorrow. Like I said before I don't usually like movies without talking, but Brody made the movie so interesting. He really can act and speak by using body language and facial impressions.
Things that made me so sad were to see how the Jews seemed to be very submissive to the changes and how they were treated, and also the destiny of the good person in the end.
The Kite Runner (2007)
Lack of emotions - missing the heart of the story
I just read the novel and it was incredible and fascinating. I read it in one day. It was so addictive.
The movie was a disappointment. The biggest reason was the lack of emotions. The novel was so deep but I didn't find that in this movie. The movie doesn't achieve viewer's motions - at least not mine. I don't recognize the main characters at all. They are very shallow in here. Not at all like in the novel. The movie doesn't explain the characters at all, like who are Ali and Hassan, what are the relationships between Ali and the father, or Ali and Amir. What is the problem between Amir and his father and what really cause those problems. How the father and his long time friend differs in their point of views and in their relationships with Amir. What is their relationship with Islam and how it develops. The movie shows what breaks Amir's and Ali's relationship, but doesn't tell how it affected to them. How their relationship changed. It doesn't show Amir's continuous fight with himself and with guilt. These things are the core of the movie, but the viewer doesn't reach these issues. The movie feels shallow.
Some good points as well, because the movie wasn't all bad. I didn't know what the life was in Afganistan before Talebans. I didn't know what the houses are like and how the interiors were so similar in 70's than in western countries. I was very nice to see these. I liked also the nature - so bare and kind of peaceful.
Btw, were Adidas' Superstars sneakers already existing in 70's?? :D
So, I recommend to pass this movie and to read the book, if you have time. But sure, watch the movie, if you don't have time to read, but watch it few time to find the real message and the real characters and relations in it.
