Star (2016)
Bye Felicia
Jude Demorest's acting is nauseating....They have her trying to hard to be raunchy and "hood". She is a hot mess and I'm not convinced. I like the premise of what this show is trying to be but right now, it is pure garbage. Too much going on and too many side stories. It's ALL OVER the place. I tried making through the first 2 episodes and could not. The best thing about this show is Queen Latifah. She is the most believable character. The others, not so much. I think they should have done better at casting Star's role. I would also do less of the salon scenes. They seem to be filling up space and exist to only have extra drama effect. Every scene in the salon seems pointless.
The Ones Below (2015)
Heartbreaking
A part of me wonders if the evil couple faked their pregnancy and planned to do what they did all along or are they really that sadistic that they would go so far to kill someone else, destroy a family and then steal their baby. I was so super hoping for them to get caught...so I will admit, I was bothered by this as I went to sleep and then for the rest of the day after. What bothered me the most is how there seemed to be no real trust between the good couple. The husband seemed to immediately think in adverse to his wife and not believe her when she felt something was off about their neighbors. The wife, also should have headed her husband's intentions to ignore them and not involve them in their lives again, but she ignored his wishes as well. The acting was on-point and the directing was done very well. Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time wondering what was going to come of this story.
The Boy Next Door (2015)
Shut Up Professional Critics
Professional critics can be pretty extra at times. There was nothing inherently bad about this movie although it isn't an Oscar worthy piece of art. I was entertained by the movie but read the reviews before watching...prepared myself for the worst...after watching...walked away scratching my head wondering why professional critics made such a big deal about this movie and why it is deemed so bad...to me, it was entertaining...and kept my attention. I rarely listen to "professional critics" and can't believe this is an actual profession...it's so easy to criticize than to make your own ish. my advice, watch yourself and make up your own mind.
The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)
It was Okay
This movie was about a disabled man and his care giver both finding a way to LIVE and not just exist...very great plot and story line. Overall, I liked the movie...but I wish they had toned down Selena Gomez's vulgar language...felt more like she was trying to prove she wasn't a "good girl" anymore with this role....I may be wrong...but that is what I saw...Her acting was just way over the top in this one and I wasn't convinced the least bit. Usually I like her stuff. I found myself laughing my butt off at the pranks being played on the care giver. I'm really loving a lot of the Netflix originals and will be adding this one to my faves to watch again.
Megachurch Murder (2015)
Just Horrible
I wanted to give this movie a shot because I've long been a little frustrated with not seeing some of my favorite actors from from the 80's and 90's not involved in more acting roles. So, I was excited to see Malcolm Jamal Warner as one of the cast members of this movie. But man oh man, from start to finish, this movie was horrible! What's sad is they had some awesome veteran actors in this movie, Malcolm Warner, Michael Beach, Dawn Lewis, and Tamala Jones. The rest of the cast can go kick rocks for all I care. Seriously, through out the movie, I kept saying, "Just kill me now!" It was full of cheesiness. I rolled my eyes several times. The main character needs to sign up for acting lessons as soon as possible. She is a beautiful woman, but that was some nonsense acting. They had her character crying the entire movie. There was a definite need for balance. The storyline was predictable. I've long felt that Romeo needed some acting lessons as well but I've seen him do better and feels he has potential. A part of me feels sorry for the entire cast because the directing and storyline was just horrible and I sort of feel this made everyone do horribly because I'm just surprised at the acting of the veteran actors I mentioned. Dawn Lewis was the ONLY one that was convincing in her role. Everyone else....nuh uh....not happening. So, I'm think this was just a poorly directed movie and the actors portrayals suffered because of it.
I understand that it is easy to criticize. So, I'm hoping the director just pick things and try again and do better in his future projects because this was a mess. My 1 star is for Dawn Lewis in her small role.
