Supercell (2023)
The Sincerest Firm of Flattery...
Allusions and imitations abound in this old-style disaster movie. At first I wasn't sure if I was delighted or annoyed with all the Jaws Easter eggs but eventually decided to roll with the flow.
The cinematography was surprisingly good, as was the acting. The music score was very nice - very reminiscent of any movie score composed by John Williams. The plot was okay and pretty predictable, especially once you peg the characters to their Spielberg counterparts. I did appreciate the refreshing mom and girlfriend characters - not typical of the old disaster movies.
No, this is certainly no Twister - it lacks the witty and exciting script. But I was surprised when, by the end of the movie - I was glad I watched it. And if nothing else, it was fun to pick out the homages to some of the greatest films and to analyze what it was about those films that set the standard and made us love them.
Accidental Texan (2023)
Delightful and Fun
As a West Texas girl, I knew I had to see this picture and so very glad I did! The cinematography was beautiful, the storyline refreshing (clean, funny at times, touching at others), acting was wonderful, music was incredible. I enjoyed every minute of this feel-good, kind of old-fashioned film where the audience roots for the good guys who aren't perfect, but earn our concern and care.
Sure, the "bad" guys and their ploys are a bit melodramatic but that's what makes this type of film fun. The good guys are a bit flawed and that's what makes us relate to them and like them. It's a new twist on the fish out of water theme, but I never anticipated what would happen next like we do in so many movies today. And what's a movie about Texas without an homage to Whataburger?
Highly recommend (both the film and Whataburger!).
Jack and the Dustbowl (2012)
Delightful!
I discovered this little gem a few years ago when I was teaching my sons about the Dustbowl. What a beautifully filmed and positive spin set in a period of time so often portrayed as dark and hopeless. It's definitely family-appropriate with a positive message.
Sam Houston: American Statesman, Soldier, and Pioneer (2013)
A Great Documentary About a Great Hero
I love Texas history, and am always on the lookout for a movie that accurately tells the true story, but entertains at the same time. That can be tough to find in a documentary, but this movie is an excellent combination of storytelling and factual information.
The life of General Sam Houston is presented in a well-narrated fashion, with beautiful visuals to make the story come alive. Interspersed are interviews with Texas history and Sam Houston experts, lending both credibility and interest to the film. I love the way those interviewed give different perspectives to both the life of Houston, as well as a better understanding of the time in which he lived. Even General Houston's great-grandson makes an appearance.
There are quite a few movies out there about Texas history and Sam Houston, and some are more factual than others. But this movie is the cream of the crop, in my opinion. You learn about Houston's background and all of those aspects of his life that contributed to his military and political career and successes. You don't have to be a Texan to enjoy this story - the movie does a great job proving that Houston's life needs no exaggeration. The true story is incredible as it is.
