White Water Summer (1987)
Surprised so many liked this
OK, I have to admit this movie was like meeting someone that gives you a good first impression... but you later realize they are a lying sociopath. I give it a 4 for the acting. Speaking of sociopaths... was that Kevin's motivation for being cruel? If not, I have no idea what was. This guy barely knows these kids, but is so interested in "teaching them a lesson" that he constantly endangers their lives to do it. What was the lesson by the way? You're lucky for being alive? Did it bother anyone else that Sean Astin's character is not only left to hang off a cliff by Kevin but also by all of his so-called friends, one of whom makes a lame attempt to go back and retrieve him but is easily thwarted by the Baconmeister. With friends like that...
If you want a good "in the woods with dangerous guy" movie, I recommend SHOOT TO KILL with Sidney Poitier, Kirsti Alley and Tom Berenger.
South Pacific (1958)
Someone did a terrible job casting island extras.
Even with all it's faults, I can watch this movie over and over just to see Rossano Brazzi stand there. Ooh la la & yum! But the reason for this comment is to make a point that I haven't seen in any of the other comments I've perused. I suppose because it's probably politically incorrect, and I half expect to be dubbed a "racist" for even thinking this, but here goes: The extras on the island of Bali Hai are supposed to be South Sea islanders called "Tonkanese." However, you don't have to look too closely to see a multitude of racial differences among the actors. What a ridiculous mish-mosh of physical attributes! African Americans, Asians, Polynesians, etc. I mean, how hard would it have been to achieve a cohesive, unifying look to what is supposed to be an isolated island people, by casting actual Pacific Islanders or at least some other group exclusively. I dunno, perhaps in those days it would have been difficult. However, the result makes me think that someone, somewhere had the antiquated, stupid thought "they all look alike" referring to any non-Caucasions. Bottom line...it was crappy casting. Also ironic considering the powerful theme of prejudice in the movie.
Sideways (2004)
I agree with Cpartak
Aside from being boring and while mildly amusing in parts, not at all funny as billed, the movie seems to me an amorality tale. Let's review: Miles' wife leaves him for screwing around. He stands by and says nothing while his friend Jack completely uses Stephanie in order to have one last selfish fling before his marriage, and what's worse... leads her and her daughter on with talk of love and the future. Stephanie's not much better, encouraging her little girl to call this one-night stand loser "uncle." Finally, when she finds out about the deceit, she commits assault and battery. Nice! Later, after also lying to Jack about not having told Maya, Miles is the "best man," someone who's supposed to stand up and support his friend in a sacred marriage commitment, full well knowing that he's screwed two women in the past week. What is this world coming to when this drek is called a good movie and worse yet..."comedy?" Sorry, not for me.
