Eric (2024)
Superb... Ignore the haters
So I came into this knowing a little about Eric, but this is far from being about him
There is so much going on here, a nightmarish NYC with corruption, homophobia and squalor.
A lot of the characters are hideous. Vincent is hugely unsympathetic.
But it works. Eric just adds another layer to the creation. Ledroit is the detective with the white hat, fiercely dogged to supply justice.
I've loved this show, and feel sorry for those that either don't get it, or don't like the AIDS references and gay characters.
Cumberbatch is a great actor, able to solicit empathy for a character that probably doesn't deserve it in many ways.
In fact, most of the acting is excellent.
I still can't believe it isn't rated higher.
Maybe 40 years after this is set, people still arent tolerant of characters who aren't all heterosexual?
The Tourist (2022)
What went wrong?
I loved the first season. Funny, witty and intriguing, with some well written and acted characters. The relationship between The Man and Helen was warm and believable. So I was very happy for a second series to come along. I didn't mind the first 2-3 episodes as such, although( I suspect the change of location was hiding the fact that it had actually gone downhill) Then it just fell off a cliff (no pun intended!) There is zero chemistry between the leads in the 2nd series and the situations get more and more ridiculous and follow increasingly bad choices. I only kept going because I'd enjoyed S1 so much. The final minutes of the final episode were excruciatingly bad. I hope it doesn't come back again.
Frasier: The Good Father (2023)
Just..no
I viewed the news of the reboot with trepidation. I love the original series, and probably watch frasier at least every other day, having seen every episode dozens of times.
It's fair to say it is one of my favourite programmes of all time.
The news that none of the original case other than Kelsey Grammar were returning, also didn't fill me with excitement.
But, I still wanted to try it regardless.
It's awful.
Frasier the character is actually fine, but the ensemble cast is not.
The original was brilliantly written, and although episodes could be farcical and over the top, there was usually a charm and sweetness to the characters.
Here, all the main actors are caricatures, ridiculously over the top and hamming up their performances.
Nicolas Lyndhurst is miscast as Frasier's sardonic colleague/friend, and Freddy tries to hard to gurn for laughs.
The worst character has to be David though.
Set up as a Niles replacement he is in fact Sheldon Mark 2 and is just not funny.
Overall, this is just another american sitcom.
No charm or subtlety.
I can see why the original cast members passed on the project.
Sorry Kelsey, some things have had their time.
