Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
A completely unique cinema experience
What is there to say about Mad Max that has not already been said? not much. By now, a few weeks after the film's initial release, you will have seen that there has been high critical praise for this movie among fans and critics alike. To dislike this film, which is subjective at the end of the day, would make you part of a small majority to say the least. I went to see Mad Max: Fury Road with little to no hype for it. Its true, i have seen the trailers and while i was enjoying each new piece of marketing material that i saw i was never truly excited. When i heard the reviews, however, i made sure to see the movie critics were raving about. It was something completely unique and awesome to behold. Not only did the director of the original Mad Max return, at the old age of 75, but it was a revival of a long dead franchise with a substantially high and risky budget that was pretty risky considering how dead the franchise is. Everything about this movie is amazing. I won't ramble on too much longer but the action, acting (Especially Charlize Theron who was the best performer in my eyes) practical effects and the world created in this movie were all amazing. If you haven't seen Mad Max: Fury Road, watch it now.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Not as good as i hoped, but still great
This movie is not better than the avengers. This movie is not better than Captain America 2. This is not the best Marvel movie. This may conflict with a lot of people's opinions, but its true. I wanted to adore this movie. I could picture it at the top of my top 10 movies of the year list. I was practicing what i'd say in my review video on YouTube. Then i saw the movie. Don't get me wrong, it was a great movie. Very enjoyable. But nothing that new or original, which is what i desperately wanted from this movie: to be something completely new that we'd never seen before. The best thing about this movie are the characters. While some, Gamora, are never really built upon as much as others and some, Drax, do become very dull at times, they are all interesting characters. Part of what people were complementing James Gunn about was setting up all these characters in one movie as opposed to Joss Whedon, who worked with characters that had already been established in several movies beforehand. At sometimes, the development is great: i especially liked a scene in which Rocket Raccoon had an emotional breakdown. However, Drax's obsession with finding Ronan eventually became a bore and i got sick of it pretty quickly. Rocket and Groot were great, although i thought that they weren't really shown as having that trademark friendship that they have in the comics. The relationship was there at some specific scenes, although most of the time Rocket thought that Groot was acting stupid, insulting him and using him solely for muscle. Chris Pratt as Star Lord was the best performance in the movie, and he brought a lot of charisma to the character. My main problem was the generic plot. This plot felt like it had been recycled from the Avengers, or any generic team based movie. There's that signature moment where all the team members are defeated and scattered (like in the avengers) only to have them spurred into action again. They start off hating each other and end up being best friends. There is literally a scene where Groot takes out a group of bad guys in a hallway that was basically the same as the Hulk/Loki scene in the Avengers. Don't fix something that isn't broken i guess, but i hoped for something more original. I also think the end credit scene was a massive kick in the balls for anyone expecting something epic to hold them over to Avengers 2. James Gunn hyped it up so much i was really looking forward to it, and it ended up just being a joke. Literally. While i have these complaints, i must say that this movie is enjoyable. Its a good first step into the Marvel cosmos universe, but i hope the issues can be improved upon in the future sequels.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
The greatest cartoon show of all time
This show is incredible. With everyone currently obsessing over anime nowadays, this show is one that i feel is overlooked, mostly because it is an American made cartoon and is not technically anime.
The show is centered around a war between the fire nation and the rest of the world including the Water tribe and the earth kingdom (The air nomads were not involved as they were all killed off by the fire lord to prevent the re-incarnation of the avatar). The world is full of people called benders, who have the ability to manipulate and control a specific element e.g. earth, fire, water, air. The Avatar is the only one who can master all 4 elements, yet he disappeared at the start of the war. Aang has been frozen in ice for 100 years, since the war started. He is awakened by Katara, a water bender from the south pole, and her brother Sokka. It is quickly revealed that Aang is in fact the Avatar who disappeared at the start of the war and is the last air bender in the world. The rest of the show then focuses on his journey across the world to master the 4 elements and defeat the fire lord, ending the war.
The show is bursting with originality, from the overall premise of the plot to the beautifully crafted lore behind it. The characters are all fantastic and fill their own respective character roles very well. Aang is a goofy 12 year old kid afraid of the responsibility that has been thrust upon him and has to learn to accept the fact that he is tasked to save the world. Katara is the caring and sensible mother figure, usually with a very level head. Sokka is the funny guy constantly cracking one liners, and ones that cause real genuine laughter and never cease to be funny. Even the characters of Appa and Momo, Aang's animal companions, are extremely lovable and even provide some great moments of themselves, one of the main story arcs of series 2 revolving around Appa (a flying "Sky Bison"). The many other characters in the show are also all amazing, although there are two many to write about. It also switches seamlessly from fun and goofy comedy to awesome and awe inspiring action. If i have convinced one person to watch this show from this review, i will consider it a success. This show is amazing and is my personal favorite show of all time
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
The best Marvel standalone movie yet
I love this movie. The Avengers will always be the best Marvel movie for me (until Avengers 2, which could be better or worse) but this movie was such a shock. I didn't care much for the first Captain America, it was mediocre at best in my opinion, but this one was absolutely incredible. The action was great and very down to earth, not many special effects are used. This made the movie feel like more of a thriller movie, something that we could see happening in everyday life unlike men in metal robot suits and gods with thunder powers. The main reason i love this movie is because it had the balls (for lack of a better term) to change the Marvel cinematic universe forever. Especially considering Cap is not their main or most popular character, which is what shocked me. Overall this is not just a great superhero movie, its a great movie in general.
Mad Love (2011)
Just sex jokes
The comedy of this show is literally all based off of sex jokes. Every advertisement i've seen for it here in the UK involves sex jokes, mostly courtesy of the character "Larry". Sex jokes are funny when done right and done subtly, like in FRIENDS for example, yet this show is just outright unfunny with its joke delivery. As far as any other aspect of it, the show is extremely generic. Like Extremely. We've seen the characters and the plot 100 times, nothing about this show is different or unique. over all, its not the worst show i have ever watched but sure comes close. Jason Biggs does put in a somewhat likable performance, yet it is not nearly his best. As for the other actors, they are also very generic, so generic in fact that i did not even bother to learn there names before writing this review. Thats how little i care for it
Frozen (2013)
Surprisingly Charming
I didn't watch this movie in the cinema, whether it was because i felt it was a threat to my masculinity or for some other reason. I ended up watching it on DVD a few days ago, because i wanted to see what the hype was about since everyone i'd talked to said it was amazing. i found myself actually really enjoying the movie, it was very original compared to the stereotypical Disney princess movie and i really liked the premise of it. The characters were actually all great, even Else and Anna who i didn't see myself liking at first yet found them very likable. Olaf was obviously hilarious as well. i also really enjoyed the music, which has become very popular with fans. Kirsten Bell and all of the other voice actors did a great job, i was very impressed. im giving it 8 stars, which is very good. In my opinion, this is a very entertaining movie that also carries a very deep emotional message.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
The Pinnacle of animated movies
Its very rare that a book to movie adaptation is this good, and in my opinion this movie is a lot better than the book that it was adapted from. This is not just Dreamwork's finest movie so far, it is what all animated movies should aspire to be. The movie has such a pure heart and spirit, the range of emotions you go through while watching it ranges from happiness to sadness to the goosebumps you get during the climax. Im going out on a limb here and saying that Toothless is my favourite movie dragon in the history of cinema. Move over smug, this dragon is bad ass and scary one minute and then adorable as a domestic cat the next. Surprisingly, Toothless is the character i connected with most in the film because of my experience as a pet owner. Anyone with a dog or cat (or other pets i suppose) will love Toothless as he is so adorable as well as being loyal to hiccup. You cannot watch this movie without smiling, laughing and sometimes even on the brink of tears. If you are a movie fan, you need to watch this movie. I hope the sequel is just as good.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013)
Wasted Potential
For the first review i will ever write, i decided to review this awful movie.
I was a huge fan of the first one, it was funny, had great voice actors and was really original (not completely original but still very original compared to other animated movies). I was hoping the sequel would be the same, but boy was i wrong. This movie was trash compared to the first one. The plot was so generic that any long time movie watcher like myself could tell exactly what was going to happen. I mean its basically a carbon copy of the most generic movie narrative ever. They also changed a whole bunch of the character voices, including Earl the policeman and Steve the monkey. They then expected us to care about these characters despite them sounding nothing like they did in the first movie. This movie may be somewhat enjoyable for kids and families, or for people who haven't seen the first one but other than that it is god awful. The first movie was fine the way it was and did not need a sequel as bad as this.
