Walk the Line (2005)
The BD Spotlight
Mash together a mesmerizing performance from Phoenix and brilliant direction from Mangold and you have a magnificent biopic. Cash deserved a top tier movie about him...and he got one.
Interstellar (2014)
The BD Spotlight
Is Interstellar a kaleidoscope in movie form? Perhaps. It has all the wondrous and captivating visuals needed to fit the bill for sure, but there is more to it than that. The emotions are shared between the characters and audience as if we depend on the success of their mission as well. It pulls you in, it surprises, and it has an all to close to home story. Another ace from Christopher Nolan.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
The BD Spotlight
Going in blind to the story almost makes it better. Not knowing what was real and what wasnt was a major trip as a viewer. The movie transcends its art form and breaks the fourth wall by making you feel as confused as the protagonist. His pain is your pain. His fear is your fear. There are few films that can do such a thing. It is a unique and astounding creation.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
The BD Spotlight
Some might think I would describe this as a guilty pleasure, but that is not the case. I feel no guilt over enjoying this movie. It grabs my attention and keeps it throughout. I grow to care about the characters and I feel the scale and tragedy of the depicted events. There is a difference between good history and a good film. Pearl Harbor just happens to be only the latter. I can suspend my beliefs and sense of realism for a few hours in order to watch a movie for what it is. Perfectly imperfect is just fine with me.
The Third Man (1949)
The BD Spotlight
Citizen Kane is the movie most often associated with Orson Welles. They prop it up as Welles' greatest film. I land firmly on the opposing side. The Third Man stands atop my list of Orson Welles films and it's not even close. If not the best film noir of all time then it is surely one of them. If you are looking to dip your toe into the classics, there is no better place to start than here.
Aladdin (1992)
The BD Spotlight
The greatest animated film supported by the greatest voice performance of all time in Robin Williams. The music, the visuals, the comedy, the characters...they all add up to one heck of a good time. One can always count on Aladdin to make you feel warmer than a fresh baked apple pie. A tantalizing treat to say the least.
I, Robot (2004)
The BD Spotlight
This movie has everything. Drama, comedy, action, romance, sci-fi, Converse All-Star sneakers, robots and so much more. Everything is blended together into a fantastic thriller that has major rewatchability. Just another great Will Smith outing, so tune in!
Eagle Eye (2008)
The BD Spotlight
Make sure you have health insurance before you watch. With all the twists and turns you are liable to get whiplash or at least a little sick. But the film doesn't disappoint. It's fast paced and grabs your attention with a tight chokehold. As long as you just let it happen, you'll find yourself watching a movie you enjoy.
The Patriot (2000)
The BD Spotlight
As someone with a degree in history I can very much state that the story is a gigantic work of fiction. Understanding that, I can still say this film is a fun ride. The story is tragic yet inspiring. The action is well choreographed yet not over done. Mel Gibson' epic historical tale is one for the ages. With his trusty hatchet in hand there is nothing that can stop him. Not even the full might of the British Army.
The Dark Knight (2008)
The BD Spotlight
Darkness has fallen on Gotham. A new villain has risen and Batman is in his sights. The Joker makes his live-action return and he is going head to head with the famed Caped Crusader. Heath Ledger shines as the Clown Prince of Crime and Christian Bale provides another great performance as well. With an All-Star cast, amazing visuals, and one of the greatest stories ever put to film, this is not a film you want to miss.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
The BD Spotlight
Replace the word 'the' with the F word and what do you get? Answer: The script for Wolf of Wall Street. If you can stomach the vulgarity then pop the movie on and pull out your swear book dictionary. This movie has them all. Keep a bookmark in the Fs though. It's a wild ride, but one you will enjoy.
Crimson Tide (1995)
The BD Spotlight
Hackman vs Washington. Two titans of film square off in a fascinating submarine film fare. The stakes are high and the story gripping. With a non-stop pace it will seem like the movis over in a flash. So, put on your big boy pants and buckle up, you are in for a treat.
Shutter Island (2010)
The BD Spotlight
Watching Shutter Island is like having a spider drop down on you from the ceiling while you find out you aced your chemistry exam. In that, you are frightened and creeped out, but also ecstatic and joyous at the same time. It's a mysterious, dark thriller with a well developed and surprising ending. Its worth the creepy watch.
Out of Time (2003)
The BD Spotlight
No one does it like Denzel. My personal favorite actor is back at it with another top notch film. Out of Time is fun, gripping, and twisty all at the same time. It's face paced and is litered with admirable performances beyond Washington. If you are a fan of twist and turn thrillers, this movie is for you.
Glory (1989)
The BD Spotlight
A movie that boasts Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Matthew Broderick is commendable on that fact alone. Add in a tragic yet inspiring real life story, great performances, and a gripping backdrop and you got yourself an amazing movie. Don't miss this one.
Jersey Boys (2014)
The BD Spotlight
Perhaps I am blind to what is right in front of me. Perhaps I am not privy to information everyone else has. Or maybe my taste in film just isn't in line with the mainstream. In any case, this film is a personal favorite. The music is great, the acting sound, and the visuals stunning. There is little to complain about in my book, but hey...watch it and form your own opinion.
The Avengers (2012)
The BD Spotlight
Depsite countless additions to the beloved MCU, The Avengers maintains its place among the franchise's best. It serves as a culmination of Phase 1 Marvel, yet also lays the groundwork for much of what comes after. It is a pillar, a lightning rod, in the long-gestating cinematic franchise and exemplifies everything that, not only a comic movie should be, but a sound film in general should be. In the future some may look back at this era of the MCU as the golden age of Marvel film. And they just might be right.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
The BD Spotlight
Do you like old men with beards? Do you like short, stubby men with beards? Do you like tall, lanky men with long hair and no beard? Well, this movie has all that and more! The Two Towers is in the top echelon of sequels. Building upon the first while also standing on its own, The Two Towers offers a breath-taking glimpse into Middle Earth. Action, drama, romance and everything in between. It provides everything a movie goer wants and deserves when sitting down to watch a film. It is no surprise this film is so revered.
Star Wars (1977)
The BD Spotlight
The quintessential perfect film. There is no better sci-fi work of art. There is no better world building. There is no better character creation. A movie that maintains its cherished place among film for half a decade, musters up incomparable nostalgia, and is still considered the premier blockbuster movie deserves every accolade bestowed upon it. Many have and will try to replicate it, but none will ever succeed.
NBA 2K20 (2019)
Worst Game Ever Made
This game is utterly atrocious. Not only the worst sports game ever made, but worst game period. Good graphics wasted by horribly inaccurate ratings and gameplay. There may not have been any person knowledgeable about basketball involved. Whatever brain dead group of developers made this should be ashamed and never allowed near a video game again. Gone are the days of enjoyable and relatable sports games. Do not buy for any amount of money. Do not play even if free, it will only make you want to bash your head in if you know anything about basketball.
