Betrayal (2023)
The hidden villain of the series about a monster
This is a story that unfortunately is becoming very common. A teacher who has darker intentions for his students and a perfect family with a husband who has a secret second life. The premise itself is one that we've seen before in fiction and nonfiction. The husband's actions however are still monstrous and he deserves everything that went his way and everything coming his way. But the actual show itself was quite boring to watch. There was never a point where I was shocked or blown away by his horrible actions. It's something you see in the news every so often. Part of me was even wondering why this was even made? Then however we met another character who in a way is not exactly evil in her actions, but still isn't morally correct in how she is handling the fallout of these events. The wife and victim of the husband responsible for all the terrible events of this documentary. She now runs a podcast about herself and everything that happened to her, but seems to truly enjoy her time as a true crime figure now. The job opportunities she is presented with, bringing victims on to her show and using them for clicks. Monetizing her and this towns trauma for mild fame and money. Her actions do not feel as if she is trying to raise awareness for predators but to milk her own experience. She even contradicts herself through out the series where in episode 1 she's condemning the child victim and calling her a liar, but by the end of the series she's calling her brave and a hero. It seems she's spinning this whole experience to her benefit in a way that's not only manipulative but very hollow feeling. This whole show made me feel as if they accomplished something they didn't mean to. Perhaps there's two different types of villains in this series.
Await Further Instructions (2018)
Very fun and unique
The main reason I'm writing this review is seeing an overwhelming number of negative reviews for this film, which truly puzzles me. This is a great alien movie, a great bottle film, and frankly just a fun ride to go on. I wasn't quite sure where the film was going to take me but found the destination just as fun as the journey which I think is rare. I also have seen complaints on the special effects for the aliens and think that those viewers didn't get it. This is a very weird movie and I don't think the film makers were going for bad special effects but more weird, unnerving, and inhuman movement for their creatures. I also love that even though we know why everything is happening we don't truly understand what's all going on. I won't spoil the ending but for me it added so much curiosity instead of questions, I was imagining what all could be happening in the rest of the houses. Could there be a way to beat them? Was there any survivors? Was it everywhere? But also the film was simple and small enough to make me not want to truly go out of my way to be upset about not knowing anything else other than the film I watched. I highly recommend this movie if you are a fan of the mist, the thing, pontypool or any other end of the world horror movies.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Good fun
Exactly what you think it is. Which isn't a bad thing at all. In fact it was exactly what I wanted it to be. Kind of like the thing but on a boat. A fun take on a small part of the Dracula lore. I won't be giving away any spoilers but if you've seen really any Dracula films you pretty much know how it's going to start and end. I think the cgi is good and works for the film. They built the monster up well. I don't think there was really a "bad" performance. Corey Hawkins was very good definitely the best part as far as acting goes. Definitely want to see him in more stuff after this. I also liked how they did Dracula's bites and kills. Won't say why I just liked it. If you like final girl movies, final stand movies, or survival movies this will definitely be one for you. My only critics of the movie is that very predictable, it played out exactly how I thought it would even the ending as fun as it was it was staring you right in the face the whole time. It's not winning any awards and is definitely closer to a straight to video movie than a blockbuster but still a great time all the same 6/10.
Atlanta (2016)
A modern day fantasy
Long time fan of the show, have been watching since it originally aired and can honestly say it's a show that will shock and surprise you which is rare today. I personally think the later 2 seasons should've been a different series of standalone stories I felt like it was hard to feel engaged with it wanting to know what's happening to the mainline characters while also juggling these side stories. I really think a show on its own that was stories like the white guy who's sued for his slave owner great grandparents, that episode was really smart, hilarious, and genuinely makes you wonder about the social repercussions if something like that were to happen. I also felt the mainline story sort of just ended I wanted more conclusion to our cast especially after seeing Their glow ups and all of the weird experiences they've had. At the same time though it is kinda fitting for how the series has been as a whole. It's kinda weird and thats also what's so great about it. They also leave you with enough to understand where these characters are going, what they want, their motivations and the fact that the show doesn't hold your hand is also nice. It's a perfect hangout show of just real life and it's a truly subtle smart and funny show. I really recommend it to anyone I think everyone should watch this one.
Swarm (2023)
Amazing
When I say this is the show to watch right now I mean stop watching the last of us or love is blind this is better! I've never seen a show take such a small premise and do so much with it. The writers are geniuses, the performances are hilarious, scary, authentic, and last in your memory. I don't think I have a single thing bad to say about this show I binged it in one day and can't wait to rewatch it already. Episode 4 I thought was the highlight of the series perfectly poking fun at the "crystals, energy, pseudo therapist white girl" aesthetic which I've been waiting for, for so long! 10/10!
Pearl (2022)
A real treat
Such a fun movie! I loved watching it top to bottom really such a treat for people looking for a weird dark funny movie. Mia goth is perfect as pearl and adds so much personality to what could have been a blanket "crazy" character. This movie has already made iconic horror status in my opinion solely from the visuals. I really recommend this movie to anyone if you are a fan of movies like "silence of the lambs", "evil dead", or and coen brothers movies. This film is not for everyone but I strongly encourage you to give it a chance! I'm very excited to see the follow up film and love the Xverse.
Infinity Pool (2023)
Not for me
Really wanted to like this one. It had a really unique cast, mostly great visuals, a fun premise, and a director with a vision. Ultimately though it felt very forced artistically and overall flat. The actual structure of the film made me not feel anything for any of the characters, I wasn't rooting for anyone and I didn't want anyones down fall I felt almost like I was watching bugs I truly could not find any emotion for anyone in this film. I will say one emotion I had watching this movie was being grossed out it's kind of a disgusting movie but not in the way I was hoping for. A big let down.
The Clovehitch Killer (2018)
It had me then really lost me
I really love a weird movie. I love it when a film shows us things we usually don't see and don't understand. This movie impressed me so much and was really intense, creepy, and unnerving. I loved it until it took a turn. It went from being at the caliber of prisoners or silence of the lambs to an episode of scooby doo. I was so disappointed with my viewing experience I don't even know if I should recommend this movie, it falls so flat in my opinion. I think they could've made the ending work but the actions of the two main characters just defy logic. No one in their right mind would go the route that the two children go. The movie even established a great and really realistic level of how manipulative the father was to his son but even that couldn't explain why this ending happens. Watch at your own risk I'm torn between a 7-6 but I'm more annoyed with the ending so right now it's a 6.
Opal (2020)
Oddly enjoyable
It's very dark and very beautiful at the same time. It truly made me feel conflicted in a way I can't full describe. The claymation is very well done and you can tell that a lot of love and probably a lot of sadness was put into this project.
Dave Chappelle: The Closer (2021)
A must watch
I think after this special Dave should retire. Not because of anything specific that was said, but the fact that he ended his Netflix contract with such a high point I don't think this could be topped. This special takes you through so many turns and it doesn't waste anytime. I never thought I could watch a stand up special that makes me laugh and makes me cry. To quote Dave's friend "I am having a human experience!" This special is the definition of what it is to be human. I think that even if you have a dislike for Dave's work or some of his opinions you should give this a watch. Try to take bias and politics out and watch this objectively, I would truly be surprised if you don't enjoy it.
Hannah Gadsby: Nanette (2018)
A real drag
It goes very slow and the timing is a bit off. I feel like there could've been some serious comedic punches thrown and they fell very flat. I feel like this was more of a spoken word performance than a comedy stand up special. There was a very serious lack of flow which felt more like a drunk friend spending 20 minutes to say a joke than someone honing their craft.
Moral Orel (2005)
It's ok
I love the idea/stop motion animation, the humor is pretty solid too. I just think it's very slow without much of a burn. I would definitely recommend this show to religious and nonreligious folk. It goes down easy and is very smart for what it is.
Dog Pound (2010)
Worth the watch
I recommend it's a good watch, it has a good tone that makes you feel for the main group of characters but also walks a tight rope of tackling subjects such as mental illness, suicide, and racism without misrepresenting these themes along the way. The cast also shines and by the end of the film we really feel like we know these characters. The film is a slow burn however and tends to drag its feet a bit. It feels like a short film that was converted to a full feature and that is truly where this film falls short, is that it's too long.
Curtis & Dave Are Dead (2013)
Maybe the most boring thing I've ever watched
I went into this hoping for a "so bad it's good" type of situation based on what I've heard about it but it just turned out to be so boring that it's dreadful. 10 minutes in and I was fighting the urge to nap, it's just so boring. I would recommend doing actually anything else than watch this movie. Please whether you are friends with the people involved, heard about it through the grape vine, or found it by accident just skip it it's not worth it.
Death Stranding (2019)
Don't waste your time
For a game that is 60ish hours long it feels as if it were weeks long. A slow burn is not even close to what I would describe this as. For the production value, actors, studio, and time put into this project it feels like a colossal waste. The story is extremely dumb and so complex that it feels like a 13 year old wrote it. If you want a good story play a telltale game or anything from a top 10 best video game stories video on YouTube. If you want engaging video gameplay then play most other things. This game has quality production value and is truly a marvel in the aspect of what it is able to do but that is all it succeeds in.
My Suicide (2009)
FLAT!
What a boring film. I went into this film thinking I was going to see a ground breaking and boundary pushing film about high school social issues, or depression, or atleast an interesting and dark subject matter. What I got instead was the equivalent of NyQuil. The Sporadic editing, to the bland acting, and nothing script made this film only worth watching for the strange and borderline funny cameos from actors of far more entertaining TV shows. This film is currently on Netflix and I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. It's only offensive to a person's brain cells and a kindergartener could write a more intriguing script.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Don't watch if you are epileptic
It's a fine Star Wars film just fine. Too flashy and not great but wraps up the already very messy new saga.
Watchmen (2019)
Please give us season 2
It is a hard hitting and brutal portrayal of a post Dr. Manhattan world. It stays true to the timeline based off of the graphic novel, while fans of the 2008 film can also appreciate the series.
I hope that anyone who sees this review will give it a watch as at this time the series is under quite a bit of scrutiny due to some political themes of the show. I think that this series will truly be one of the best debuts of 2019 and deserves to go on to fully flesh out the world created by Alan Moore.
It is unapologetically furious with its visuals and pace and does not hold back. At times the show feels slightly comical with its violence especially during a shoot out sequence involving cows, but I think this is due to the fact that a world with super heroes is hard to take seriously which even the titan of marvel has had trouble with at times.
The actors fully invest themselves and chew the scenery in the best way. Jeremy irons so far seems to be the only odd man out, something about his performance feels fake and forced. Although it could be the fact that his character interacts very little with "real people" either way it feels as if he misses his mark.
Overall my reasoning for giving the series an 8/10 at this point is it has me gripped completely even through its more mediocre points and it truely is a series made with the fans in mind.
