How I Met Your Mother: How Your Mother Met Me (2014)
Mother > Father
Before this week the mother was merely a flat character, a humanization of a fantasy list of Ted's but this week she really came to life. I really grew to love her over the course of this episode, she's such a earnest and kind woman. Maybe it's unrealistic that in 8 years she only dated one other guy, but as an audience we must remember that it's also only twenty minutes. If we showed Ted's whole story in twenty minutes he'd be a real man-slut. She gave just the right impression upon me. This episode tied in all of our favourite crossovers from the series in such a concise and fitting way. And that second-to-last scene of hers, talking to Max out on the porch; I really forgot Ted existed, I just wanted her to be happy. I can't wait to see Ted and the mother together now, but not for Ted's sake, despite the fact that I've been following his story for nine years, I really want to see the mother find someone she'll be happy with.
Best episode in a long time.
The Big Bang Theory (2007)
A Safe and Simple Show
I gave this show a five because yes, it can be funny from time to time; and no, I'm not disagreeing with the millions who watch this show avidly. That being said, I think this show is way too overrated. This show is simply an outdated style. Whereas the rest of the comedy industry is moving forward, Big Bang remains a 90s sitcom, and I mean that in the least loving way possible. Big Bang is afraid to try anything new, anything that isn't a 20 year old comedy technique. If you are the type of person who would like to turn on your TV and turn off your brain, this show is for you. It is simple and predictable. You can nearly always see the nice, clean ending coming since the theme song. And I say 'clean ending' because heaven forbid Big Bang actually create conflict. The story arcs are obvious yet simple. The characters are the archetypes of a sitcom and therefore interact in the most rehashed way possible. The character growth is safe and conforms to what is most socially acceptable. The show's weak narrative voice lends you little reason to care about the characters. And my god, can they cut the laugh track already?! Overall I find nothing about this show to push the limits, challenge the acceptable, or even make me think in the slightest. This show goes exactly where you think it's going, and the character's stereotypes have gotten to the point of unwatchable. Without an engaging storyline or dynamic characters this show is dull, flat, and simple. That being said; it's better than 2 Broke Girls
