Skrapp út (2008)
Nice warm comedy
This is a must seen !
Is a simple comedy with very believable characters, even if the story seems unreal : Anna works as a (succesfull)dealer in Reykyavik, but decides to sell everything in order to leave the island with her two sons... but a series of funny and incredible situations stars at the moment went she thinks she finally close her deal.
This film is full of poetry, like Anna (who also is a poet in her "lost" time). As well, lots of self-mockery, making fun of the Icelandic world : islander mentality, Nordic clichés, etc.
Sometimes, you can find beauty where nobody would stare at. Nice comedy to see it... and if you did, see it again ! Thanks and don't let me be misunderstood
Speed Racer (2008)
Loyal to the series
OK guys, this is important to know : this movie is loyal to the original Manga series ! I saw it and I was happy to notice that everything was respected :
Pops Racer, who's perfectly interpreted by John Goodman, and Spritle, along with Chim-Chim are like in the original(by the way, there's a small resemblance between Goodman and this young actor).
Lovely Christina Ricci and cool Susan Sarandon gives a female warm touch to this full action race and what about Hirsh and the other young male cast ? And the villains ? As in the comics !!!
They said that it was the same brothers who did Matrix trilogy, that adapted Speed Racer ??? Matrix was a complete waste of time ! It was boring !
Speed Racer is a fun entertainment : for those who underrated this movie, you needed to know the minimum of the series first, in order to understand the "over reacted" gestures of Spritle, why a monkey, why the slow but intense relation between Speed and Trixie... only thing, Pops didn't swing around (over one foot) when he's furious, but Goodman is a good Man (and actor), so I'll forgive that one ! This is the best movie I've seen in a year !!!
Thanks and don't let me be misunderstood !!!
The Terminal (2004)
To naive !
Well, when I first saw the trailer I though it might be interesting, but when I heard it was a failure at Venise Festival I was amazed... so I never saw it at the Cinema.
Recently, it passed here in France, at th telly, I was tired and I saw it... well, if this was a Ron Howard family movie, where good guys win and bad guys get f*d, I might agree with IMDb's 7/10 qualification.
But this is a Spilberg movie that pretends to show how hard is the US after September 11th... this is really pathetic ! Clearly, Dixon's character is dispicted as the classical bad guy who will do anything to get ride of Viktor from his airport and what about all the people in working there : at the beginning they don't care of Viktor, but after some months, they admire him !
"Sir Alfred" stayed for almost 20 years in CDG (Paris International Airport) and his true life was much harder than Viktor's in this movie.
And by the way, I studied Tourim Production and I have friends in Air France, and we can all tell you this movie is more than s*t ! Is very fake and most of all, is TO NAIVE ! So this movie is perfect for the day you find yourself with no will to do an intelligent activity.
Thank's and don't let me be misunderstood !
P.S. This movie is to overqualified
Les tontons flingueurs (1963)
Simply love it !!!!!!!
OK, is not an easy movie to understand, if your not familiar to old french slang, the real argot if you see what I mean... yet, this is an easy movie to understand, since you don't need to be familiar to argot : les tontons flingueurs is a classic OK ? No need of big arguments, no need to summarize the movie to non-frenchspeakers, simply see it in original version (with subtitles or with a french friend) and you'll agree with me !!! This is a movie monument, this deserves to be IMDb's movie number one !!! If you didn't understand me... well, I'm use to it, that's why I sing Nina Simone's song...
Thank you
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
By far, the best movie by Coppola
Well, I must confess : I'm not a Coppola's fan and from what I've seen from his work is pure s*t, specially the Godfather trilogy...
(NB : wonder why everyone thinks the G trilogy is a classic... Kubrick is fair-play arguing that's a good movie, since Kubrick was intelligent).
Anyway, from all Coppola's movies, this one is only that deserves 8/10 (and believe me, I'm really generous and nice this time) : I read the book, I've seen almost all vampire's movies and my veredict is clear, Coppola's is the closest (with Nosferatu by Murnau) to Stoker's idea.
By the way, making this movie a nice work : all the actors were very good (even Keanu Reeves, who does a quite acceptable acting), Sir Anthony (Van Helsing) and Master Gary (Vlad Dracul) are trustful trademarks for an excellent movie (well... if you exclude Hannibal and Air Force One, but that wasn't their fault)...
Not to forget, recreating Victorian England, the Mideval Rumania and all the rest of the goodies, this is an interesting movie.
Thanks and don't let me be misunderstood !
Fahrenheit 451 (1966)
Total Deception
I read the book at least a hundreds times, serving as the basis of my writing world (even if for the moment, none of my 4 novels had been printed... yet) and when I heard there was a movie version I told to myself, "I must see it one day"...
Well, I think I should have avoid seeing such a piece of c..p and s...t ! Really, nothing happens like in the book :
First, they change th name of Montag's wife from Mildred to Linda... figure why this silly change.
Second, they decided to put Julie Christie in both roles of Linda and Clarisse, making not clear who is who (long hair, short hair didn't work to me or to Bradbury himself).
Third, no mechanical hound : I don't believe they didn't have the budget to do something close to it, cause you see four stupid guys flying after Montag) and Faber is also absent...
... so, no mechanical hound, no Faber and no Clarisse (Ray Bradbury himself saw this with sorrow, although he "love" this... movie), is like Hamlet without the Ghost, Horatio and Hamlet.
Forth, Françoise Truffault is a very BAD director : he used to be a very heavy movie critic but later, he became a very very s...y director and in this movie you can feel he's more worried to make clin d'oeils (references) to his old movie "Les 400 coups" instead of adapting the book Farenheit 451 !
Fifth, the acting very deceiving... take them all away ! Specially Wagner, horrible as Montag !
Sixth, the futuristic idea : if you read the book, society must be happy, having fun all the time in order to avoid thinking ; here in the movie, they did the contrary... notice that Clarisse says to Montag she loves to have fun with her students...
... actually, Clarisse was no teacher in the book, she was a student and she didn't like to have fun (as the others) but to thiink ! Read the book ! Clarissse was declared antisocial cause she love to think instead of having fun !!!
Seventh, where's the atomic bombing over Chicago ? I mean, the idea (on the book) was : a war was to be declared and the city is destroyed, Montag finally remembered when he first met Mildred and knew she died in the bombing and as for the others, Faber took a bus before, Clarisse died earlier and Montag became an outlaw, but none of the real stuff happens in this so called movie.
By the way : changing Chigago to London... not sure about the result !
OK... I see many people like it (and I wonder how... maybe they didn't read the book) and I must confess, only the beginning is good :
The credits are announced marking the reality of the story (reading is forbidden)
The first sequence, the Salamander (if you read the book, that's the nickname of the fireman's car) goes to burn with an excellent ground music...
... and that's it, nothing more ! The rest of the movie is the total deception I've already described.
Good to be back in your commentaries ! Thanks and Don't let me be misunderstood !!!
PS My personal advice, don't see this movie !!!
I epithesi tou gigantiaiou mousaka (1999)
Petite chef d'oeuvre
This movie has been misunderstood ! I've also seen it with french subtitles and is an one of a kind : parody of B and Z like sci-fi movies, with low budget FX and mainly, the characters mock everything ! I mean, a travesty is the lead lady (and heck, he look's more feminine than the minister's wife), the scientists more like a gay-pride rather than real ones (sic. scientists) and I pass...
This IS a movie to see !!! 10/10 or 20/20 as here in the old land !!! This worth for having a nice time, laugh with the silliness of every situation and acting !!!
And perhaps, you'll wanna taste a moussaka... oh lord, I'm vegetarian, so no problem for me !!! LOL
Venus Rising (1995)
another personal classic
I saw this movie, really... but really longtime ago ! Making it a personal classic (as many others). True the plot and story line was more than hard to follow, but hey ! I like stuff which are really hard to follow (see Lynch's and try to say what's the plot, only from the first view !).
Well, as I managed to understand, the movie is an erotic thriller (if I may use the therm, but understand, there's no pornography in this sentence), with really interesting frames and lights and sequences !!! As I already said, I'm a lousy writer and many of the points and elements of this films are very inspiring for my works.
OK, about the movie, the cast played well : Audie England was perfect as Eve !!! (love that actress, to bad we haven't seen her lately), even Morgan Fairchild has an interesting role here (besides her acting as Chandler's mother in friends, she's so bad that... you should flee her like the black pest ; but in this movie, she's fascinating) ; alright, males characters aren't so well developed, besides Costas Mandylor (who does a good job).
Well, haven't seen it lately, cause is easy to guess : this is not your regular movie at french TV... and for the rentals, impossible to find what you're looking for ! Yet, this movie is a good classic for the purist of odd plots and small pace ; only bad thing... well, don't remember, perhaps to unnecessary the blood shade or not knowing what happens to Fairchild later... longtime I saw the movie, but my memory is good ! If one day any of my works are publish (don't think so... I'm realist), I'll recommend my readers to see "Venus Rising" as a reference.
9 over 10, really a small masterpiece ! To bad it's underrated here ! Thanks & don't let me be misunderstood
Jewboy (2005)
One of a kind
Well, I saw this movie on TV (here in France, to see real good movies, tune in over Arte, the french-German post) and I must say : don't let you be surprised by a title ; I recognize I was a kind of reluctant to see the movie, afraid it might be some clichés about my people's life or worse...
But from the first take, Yuri's father's funeral, I knew this film was for me and my expectations : Jewish world (my world !) is describe with style and class, and furthermore, an interest overview about the community in Australia (according to some mates, is increasing while in other countries is decreasing at the same tempo) ; funny to notice although the movie takes place in Sidney, there's no visible great monument, yet you knew where the films takes place.
About the story : very original the idea about a studious Hassidim, son of the great Rabbi, returning from Eretz to see everyone expecting him to succeed his father, but instead he decides to become a taxi driver... very original ! About the characters : Ewen Leslie is very believable and sincere as Yuri and Naomi Wilson as his grandma Minnie also (ok, she makes a little to much Isaac B. Singer's character, but you feel she's really your grandma Minnie); for the other's, to bad that Saskia Burmeister's Rivka hadn't more time on the story, since I like this actress and she's very good young and true promising (not like some others... no personal allusion to a second zone french singer I dislike), cause I saw her at Wicked Science episodes here in France... she's good but to bad she's only given secondary (unimportant) roles.
Anyhow, feeling I lost myself... one thing to know about this movie : one of a kind ! really unique, sober, funny and sour (as Jewish life and humour are : from sadness to happiness)... simply excellent !!! 20 over 20, as French rates.
Toda & don't let me be misunderstood !
Forever Knight (1992)
Great classic
As young, i used to see this series in dubbed version, but this didn't annoyed me to appreciate an original idea of vampires : on of them tries to buy himself and wash away his sins, by seaking good all over the periods he travels ; he ends on the present day (by the time of the series) as a police detective, solving cases directed linked with his old time vamp pals.
Too bad I couldn't catch up entirely with the series, but I keep good old memories about it and I hope I manage to find her anywhere (well, this is not the kind of series you'll find here in France, but Paris is a city where you can find many "insolites" stuff !).
Simply is impossible not to love "Forever Knight" : great actors, perky Gothic atmosphère and beautiful structured stories ; myself, I'm a bad time writer and this series is an inspiration !!! 9 over 10, cause I couldn't saw the series completely ; but I manage, is surely be 10 over 10. Thanks & don't let me be misunderstood
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Didn't get it
I just didn't get the idea of this film, I found it quite boring. I hoped someone could explain what's exactly the plot. To many FX for nothing and the end... well, it was a little to crappy...
To bad,it begined a little prommising but ended very floppy, even a B-movie could have done better... sometimes I ask myself why a producer wastes tons of money for something like this, instead of making a real horror movie with a better scenario !
Next time, try to do something interesting. This movie, just simply won't understand a thing, cause there's no plot at all...
1 over 10 (if it was possible, I would have gave less)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Kubrick = master
I've seen this movie twice, as well for Barry Lyndon (2 times), 2001 (something like 10 times), Path of Glory (one time), Lolita (2 times), EWS (3 times), Shining (one time), FMJ (5 times) and Dr. Strangelove (5 or 10 times) ; my conclusion is simple... Kubrick = master.
I admire his art of making every single (and simple) frame a masterpiece, no matter the subject, if is in B&W or colour or else.
A Clockwork Orange, although made in 1971, it's subject is (as in french is said) d'actualité : violence travels time and space, so this movie teaches this and also, violence doesn't comes from the least expected place.
10 over 10, for all Kubrick's work
