Monkey Man (2024)
So disappointed
This story line overall is not bad, but it had so much potential to be much better.
The problem is the writer, producer, actor and director, Dev Patel tried to conflate some weird non-existent politics in India in the journey.
The politics doesn't make sense for most people in India, so its almost embarassing seeing the story play out using some weird unheard of concepts.
Social struggle is a key concept, which is fine, but the way its portrayed isn't really in line with what happens in India so its very much a movie created in the West with a view wearing Western tinted glasses.
I hoped better from Dev.
Late Bloomer: Nudes (2024)
Watched this when in Canada, hits hard!
I couldnt find this in the UK but watched it at my relatives in Canada, all I can say is its every 2nd generations experience in a nutshell. I loved the episode when the Sikh religious hardliners came on him and he had to bat them off. This series goes into what a lot of desis go through, from conflict about their jobs, to their parents, with their own identity and belonging. I only found out afterwards that Raina has Kashmiri origin. I feel his comedy is relevant and original even today in the world of tiktok slapstick humour and he should make a comeback for his nearly 1 million subscribers on youtube.
Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (2024)
Highly misunderstood personality due to nasty politics
Firstly this film was amazing. The cinematography and acting by Hooda was 9/10 if not 10/10. The story covers key areas of VS and his ideas which are being enacted even today.
It covers areas that he was correct on but suppression of truths by those in power, including the British Empire that preferred to give Gandhi the better narrative, as Gandhi would continue working with the British post-independence. This gave the Empire more leverage in the region.
Had they listened to VS, his ideals would have been enacted earlier, rather that later after many years of Gandhis party looting India.
Behind the scenes those in power were very paranoid about his influence.
Overall a must watch. I watched it with my family as it is rated 12+ in the UK.
Late Bloomer (2024)
Brilliant as were his youtube videos
He could make so much more content like this, not sure why he stopped. He would be bigger than most other brown stars.
The series is short but very to the point with the unique Jus Reign type of humour on serious situations.
If anything is bad, its the fake Punjabi accent by his mother. It sounds almost like it was a slurred version of Punjabi or a different dialect. Maybe he is of mixed descent as his surname Raina suggests.
Overall I'd recommend this to anyone that watches Babbu or Jus Reign back in the day, or even Sangtar Singh on Youtube. Great comedy amongst the perils of being brown and living abroad.
Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh (2023)
Potential to show both sides, fails to show either
This was a complete was of time movie. I was hoping to learn more about each characters thought process but we just got some virtue signalling message that isn't really relevant for modern India. They hardly went over what happened to Hindus across in India in detail, instead showed some random scenes and Gandhi smiling and looking all angelic. Godse's character looks nothing like him in real life and just seems an angry man, but if you have seen real images of him he is actually a quiet retiring looking man with eloquence. Better to save your money and watch something else as this is just nonsense.
Pathaan (2023)
Average and weird, don't bother
I was excited to see SRK back in the cinema especially after all the politics with his family and drugs scandal.
However this film fails to make the cut of the past. It's really bizarre to see a fully clothes 50 something year old playing this character with a much younger girl flaunting around wearing very little, almost sexist to to sense.
What's even worse was the unrealistic action, CGI has improved in Bollywood but for the budget they had, it's embarrassing. I think this film might succeed purely based on fanboys and fangirls but as a story it's not engaging.
They should have reduced the action and focussed on content.
Tara vs Bilal (2022)
New low for Hindi romance cinema
The whole Bilal character was weird and a bit creepy. The story line is boring, don't waste your time and money. The attempt by Hindi cinema to constantly perpetuate this type of story line is both condescending and embarrassing. The same types of characters, same plot, same genre, poor acting and nothing that appeals to Indians or Hindi speakers. I went to the cinema thinking this might be something different but its the same old junk that needs to go. I should have researched the director and actors who themselves do not have the best track record with decent movies. Save yourself some money.
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022)
This isn't a bad overall film but
This isn't a bad overall film but the story and acting lets it down. It could have more potential if the screenplay and choreography was better. The actors themselves are not natural in my opinion. It seems like the producers and directors are trying to contain a chain of films from this but they failed at the first step.
The CGI for the film is an improvement to the days gone by of awful editing and animation in Indian film cinema. But without a good narrative and story, flow of events and acting to match it, the plot just feels a bit like they are trying too hard. One of the good parts of the film is the big AB has a short spell in it with some other big names.
Dobaaraa (2022)
Plot poorly executed
Went to watch this on the recommendation of a friend. This had the potential to be a better film than how it was executed. Poor acting lets it badly down and the general flow of the film seems abrupt and trying too hard to be clever.
Raksha Bandhan (2022)
Weird hypocrisy about this film
Rakshabhandan is one of the great festivals of India. The woman ties a Raksha Sutra offering to protect the brother, as she is a woman, sign of Shaktism. Then the brother reciprocates. However the actress in this film (Kanika Dhillon) is vehemently anti-Hindu in real life.
Laal Singh Chaddha (2022)
Don't understand the point of this film
Plot is terribly executed, it's a copy. Acting is average. I left the cinema after an hour and won't be watching any more from these actors. The whole thing was a waste of time.
Shudra the Rising (2012)
Disappointing
I was hoping this would cover the link between poverty and Dalits but instead of it was just based on the pretext of a what is not considered fiction in India. The Aryan invasion theory was debunked years ago, the story and acting is weak.
The Kashmir Files (2022)
Every Indian must watch this to see what the future is like
If there is a film that you need to watch to see what the future will be like. Then this is it. This is something that Bollywood has so far refused to cover and continues to suspiciously hide away from.
Cow (2021)
True age of Kali
This is an eye opener, everyone must watch whether, whatever your viewpoint. Then make a decision what you want to do with your lifestyle after. I highly recommend my local school to send children on visits to farms to see how animals live there and are treated.
Krishna Aur Kans (2012)
Perfect for young kids
This is a great movie, explaining things in English and proper story telling rather than modern day Bollywood dramas. I would recommend it for any age 0-16.
Mahabharat (1988)
Probably the greatest Indian series ever
This show for its time was amazing, a true religous narration of the great Hindu epic. The acting is natural unlike modern Indian films relying on camera angles. I could not recommend this enough.
Dashavatar (2008)
Need more of this
Indian films need more of these stories, well narrated and good animation. The movie covers all the pastimes of all major avatars really well. Not sure why urduwood don't make more like this.
Sardar Udham (2021)
Mind blowing, make one about Madan Lal Dhingra now
This is the best adaptation yet without any Bollywood nonsense. Vicky Kaushal is a great actor and this film did the events justice. One of my the great adaptations of Indian history in Indian cinema.
The Empire (2021)
Terrible acting, story line is not factual
Save yourself some time, this is the worst kind of lazy story telling from. Following narratives rather than facts and over glorifying individuals mixed with an attempt to copy Game of Thrones.
Shershaah (2021)
Great refreshing watch of Indian heroism
This was a great watch, normally I do not like a lot of Indian films as they tend to promote barbaric Mughals but it was refreshing to see the reality behind war and what Indian soldiers have to do sometimes on a daily basis that never goes reported.
Dirilis: Ertugrul (2014)
Over hyped, more cultural excitement than story
I was told to watch this by friends, the story and acting is bland. There is a lot of revival Islamic nationalism which might be why its highly rated in more religious countries.
Aashram (2020)
Too much going on, aimless storyline
There are far too many stories going on to build the characters, also the narrative is pretty weak aiming at Hindu gurus, I think something more contemporary should be covered like the recent affairs of Catholic priests in India.
Basmati Blues (2017)
Everything western media hates in one movie
This film has echos of the Green Revolution that the West put on Asian countries, the purpose of the revolution was not to increase crop yield, but to sell chemicals and unnecessary products to poorer countries who then become dependent on it.
This movie has echos of that struggle that was put on farmers, add the fact romance between an asian man and white women, this has everything from rejecting capitalism to race mixing, I can see many older men having an aneurism watching this - the film industry rarely touch on these topics, which makes it so unique and a great.
Tenet (2020)
Could have been executed much better
This has a very similar feel to temporal films but flawed, the whole inverted aspect was far fetched with only parts of reality inverted. The Deja Vu film was a much better example of how to close the loop. I like Nolan films but this one was trying to be over clever.
Ramchand Pakistani (2008)
Pakistan should make more about persecuted minorities in Pakistan
This was a bit dull, thought it was going to be about how Hindus suffer in Pakistan, instead the director plays off politics by using the character in India. Ahmadiya muslims, sikhs and hindus suffer a lot in Pakistan and need better coverage than this storyline.
