Reacher (2022)
Season 1 is Great. Season 2 is not worth the time
It was an adrenalin rush with the first season of Reacher. Can't complain at all with how the episodes seem to reach the very end so quickly. It was so promising, and I'm guessing everyone was looking forward to another brand-new season.
Season 2 is an absolute nightmare. I'm still on episode 3, and it's bad on so many levels. Reacher is stiff, fight scenes are ridiculous, conversations are so boring and fake, just bad acting overall, no matter if it is the heroes or the bad guys. Even the makeup artist or whoever who did the blood splatter on bodies couldn't do a proper job.
I'm not sure if this is a low budget issue, or how it came to this, but I'm pretty sure that Lee Child would have been so disappointed after seeing the opening episode on Season 2.
So unlike the books!
The Vicar of Dibley (1994)
Bloody Marvellous!
I was not one of those people who got to see this series in the 90's, but boy wasn't it just the thing that I needed to see in 2022.
Although I've seen Dawn French appearing on reality TV shows, this is the first time I saw her playing a main role in a TV series. She, and the whole cast was absolutely superb!
Most of the cast has passed away now, but they've left one of the greatest comedies of all time for us to enjoy, even decades after. I'm sure you will fall in love with all of the characters in no time.
Enjoy!
The Judge (2014)
Underrated Movie
I found this movie to be very moving.
Just wanted to start with that particular sentence. The story is about how a son drifts off of his family and comes back to bid farewell, when a tragedy happens, and stays back to resolve some issues with his father.
Having gone through a tough childhood, mostly due to the path that was setup by his father, he returns to find him not changed a bit.
Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, the protagonists does more than justice to these characters, where finally the message is quite clearly spread across the screens. Family matters!
A River Runs Through It (1992)
A Beautiful Story
These are the titles which gets lost among the fast paced super hero movies.
Such beautiful scenes and even more beautiful characters. It's a story of hope, love, and simple but meaningful lives; the story of two brothers, them growing up, taking different paths, and getting together one last time with their dad to fly-fish.
I'm sure most of us could relate to fond memories in the past, and no matter how different your life may have been, this movie will take you right back in time. It is definitely for old souls like myself, which I'm quite certain that most would have given up after one look at the title. Hence the low reviews.
Truly a must watch for all ages. Family is everything!
Den of Thieves (2018)
Surprisingly, Good!
Not the first Bank heist movie to hit the theatres, so had no big expectations, except for the fact that it was a Gerard Butler movie.
The opening scenes wouldn't give you an indication either as to how this story would develop towards the end, but once you get going it really picks up and gets to you.
The end is so good, it takes you by surprise. Just like how the Ocean's Eleven movies would do.
I just realized that O'Shea Jackson is Ice Cube's doppelganger, after seeing him in this movie.
This is one of those movies which you could watch a couple of times, so get going people!
Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
Touching Story about Loyalty
If there ever was a movie about 'Loyalty", this would be it. Well, 'Love' too.
Based on a true story which took place in Japan in the 1920's, where today a monument has been erected to remind people that such loyalty matters, this is the story of the Akita dog named 'Hachiko', and his master, a professor who were inseparable since the day they met.
Richard Gere plays the main role as Hachiko's master, and his character never takes over the viewer's attention from the lovable pet. In fact, one might think that the main character is played by the dog itself, which is quite true.
I do not want to elaborate on the plot, but would only advise the readers of this review, that it is a must watch for people of all ages. It sure will remind us of how important the little time we have with our loved ones are, and to not take it for granted.
Highly recommended!
PS: You might want to watch this alone, if you do not want the folks around you to see that after all, you're not that tough as you pretend to be.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Brilliant Movie
I must start with saying that 2017 has been a bad year for movies.
Most didn't have character, a good plot, just nothing!
But then comes TBOEM. A gem which has got everything a movie should have.
Right from the start it's funny and keeps you glued on to the screen, which certainly wasn't the case with any other I watched during 2017.
It's not entirely a comedy, however. It's about this mother who lost her daughter to a rapist, and is struggling to come to terms with her child's death. She takes matters to her own hand when the Police has no clue on how to investigate the matter further.
The supporting roles absolutely nails it with their performance and compliments the main character even more.
There is absolutely so much more to this story than what meets the eye.
All in all the best movie which came out in 2017. The only one, rather.
Banshee (2013)
Not ever a boring moment
I find this TV series highly entertaining.
Whether you like Love, Violence, Hot chicks, Sex or a good old brawl, every single episode is packed with all of the above. It's like getting hooked on a drug you can not get rid of.
This is the first time I'm witnessing Antony Starr's (Lucas Hood) performance and boy, isn't he great or what? Him, Ulrich Thomsen (Kai Proctor) and Hoon Lee's (Job) performance is what kept me glued to the screen from the start, as it was truly magnificent.
All around, a great cast and not ever a dull moment in the show.
A masterpiece!
Koombiyo (2017)
Something definitely unique, and awesome!
Koombiyo os such a refreshment for sore eyes.
Brilliant cast and characters combined together with excellent script writing and camera work! Kudos to the team behind this production, for it is like no other drama ever made in Sri Lanka.
Koombiyo takes me back to the era of Mr. Herbert Ranjith Pieris, who was a renowned producer of teledramas at the time, who actually hit the spot with his work. Never have I experienced that same feeling again, until Koombiyo dropped this bomb on me.
To the point, no bullshit, matter-of-fact, practical and highly amusing are some of the key factors I see in Koombiyo, which of course takes my mind away from the everyday humdrum of life, and keeps me entertained for precisely 18 minutes or so on every Saturday. Another reason as to why I look forward to Saturdays these days.
Once you've watched Koombiyo, you are sure to get bored with the rest of these local dramas, if you're someones who's into such nonsense anyway. Who does have time for those cheap stunts anyway? Yuck! Thank you for this gem of a work team Koombiyo, and also R.I.P. Mr. Senaka Titus Anthony!
Friday Night Lights (2006)
Brilliant show!
I'm sure you've read the description, so shall not get into explaining the plot.
This show is about the everyday life of you and I. Though it emphasises fotball, it really is about how life moves forward with the battles that one struggles with. I'm sure anyone could relate to these characters as we sure have grown up with one of them, or been one ourselves.
A brilliant cast which no doubt deserves to be right up there with the hall of famers pours life into these characters, whom you'd fall in love with instantly.
Friday Night Lights is a must watch, and a show to be remembered.
In-gan-jung-dok (2014)
Pretty faces. Enticing. Very much watchable.
My first Korean movie! A friend suggested, and I finally decided to take her up on her offer. To be honest, I had absolutely no faith in going forward with the movie choice but surprisingly ended up loving it. I think the two main characters did more than enough justice to the movie. Not the best Korean movie out there I suppose, but very much watchable and entertaining. I thought Ji-yeon Lim was very pretty in the movie, and so did the the guy actor, Seung-heon Song. In my personal opinion, guys shouldn't be pretty and doll like as these Korean actors are. The only thing manly about them is the smoking and shaving, if there was anything to shave at all. (maybe I failed to see the stubble) More than anything, I liked the 'The Rose', sung by Aoi Teshima at the ending credits. What seemed to be like Korean lyrics, ended up being her accent.
Poldark (2015)
Beautifully cast..A masterpiece
Finally, a TV show worth writing about. An outstanding performance by the entire crew, especially Aidan and Eleanor. Usually adaptations as such wouldn't be this beautiful, and I've not even read the book. The story is about this stubborn and arrogant, young war hero returning home to his family who thinks that he's dead. Losing his love due to his absence, he then sets out to make a living by his own, changing his entire self into someone new; someone who actually cares for another human being, unlike his previous self. If there was ever a pilot which would blow your mind off, this would be it. I wonder why Poldark hasn't had much attention as it should be, for it's too beautiful to share one's thoughts about. A spectacular show which definitely should be on the top of the charts!
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
Touching but sad love story
It's about this beautiful girl with a terminal illness falling in love with a guy who survived the same..or is it? The story winds around their quest to meet the author of their favorite book and how their love becomes stronger over time. Hazel, played by Shailene Woodley, gives an inspirational performance which I think was done marvelously and way better than Ansel Elgort who plays the role of Gus. The movie runs for more than two hours but you hardly feel it due to the emotions flowing around. It's a beautiful movie just like the Nicholas Sparks stories that we instantly fall in love with. One of John Green's greatest turned into a movie!
Promised Land (2012)
very much watchable and has a good flow to it
The word I'm looking for is...sweet, I guess. Matt Damon is cool as always and becomes the hero in what seems like a play where he might have ended up being the bad guy. The story is about a gas company trying to invest in this lovely country side and own these poor folks' lands. Matt works for them and is sent to this town to spread word about the company and get the peoples attention and to sign some deals. There seems to be competition too when an environmental organization makes its presence and gives the downside of the whole deal. There seems to be a stage where the Green guy gets the girl instead of our hero. The movie ends up in a twist that even I didn't expect until the end.. Go ahead and try it out..
Thanha Rathi Ranga (2014)
Great cast and a superb act with a twist
A very peculiar title from what we normally see out there, and do not mistake it to be the story of the three daughters of 'Mara', from Lord Buddha's days. Not your everyday sort of movie either where the hero chases after the beauty and kills the villain in the process. If that is where your taste lies, then please do not watch this as it is focused at a much more mature audience.
A three-wheeler driver, a handyman and a university student plays the main characters in the aftermath of the war celebrations. The story is about their journey to the war inflicted areas in Northern & East regions in Sri Lanka and how it ultimately brings back distress into their lives on return mainly due to a cowardly act.
The acting I found to be exceptional which is not the case in most Sinhalese movies and it does keep you glued to the screen throughout the 95 minutes of playtime. All in all, great movie to lookout for.
