La La Land (2016)

A Heart Quaker

Between reaching your dreams and staying with the one you love, which choice do you make? Stone and Gosling's characters develop a true love, one bound by music and appreciation for eachother's artistry, but like real relationships, small cracks start to appear when the characters choose one over the other.

Suddenly, their dreams seem too far apart.

This movie does a great job of romanticising the concept of finding a true love, only to have it crashing down. The final moments of the movie are the most powerful I've seen in a completely different way than the Titanic. Never has a romance movie shown the feeling of regret so captivatingly.

The cinematography and location is also beautiful, the one shot take of the jazz band and the dancing scenes are gorgeous and the movie leaves you feeling nostalgic.

The Myth (2005)

A mature fairytale

Jackie stars as an archaeologist who falls asleep and wakes up as a general in another time. The movie is an epic, with a stunning soundtrack (that I still listen to to this day), beautiful visuals and a grander storyline than his other movies. He always gets the girl.

Titanic (1997)

A movie that opens your heart.

The only romance movie that doesn't feel contrived, it brings you back to a time where you could love with careless abandon. The freeing nature of the two characters and breaking from their social classes to be together is very Romeo and Juliet, but the intense romance between them is something to be seen. That love alongside the unusual combination of a disaster paints a strangely beautiful picture of love.

Ryuzo and the Seven Henchmen (2015)

Slow-paced story about 7 old men hanging out

Surprisingly slow moving. The main characters don't form a Yakuza to get revenge, they form it simply because they miss the Yakuza life. Thus the movie is more about men hanging out more than the lifestyle, which I found to be a better plot than actually having an established plot.

I found the cast to be overacting, as most Japanese comedies do. It was almost too much for me.

Slapstick with a few Boke-Tsukkomi scenes (Back and forth bantering) are repetitive, few laugh out loud hilarious scenes but an enjoyable watch if you can get past the first half of the movie.

Outrage (2010)

Never boring

A great Yakuza film, has some teaching points about how the Yakuza functions. The heirarchy and loyalty is a huge deal in the Yakuza, which is clear here. Overall a gore fest (when it's revenge time) with good acting, an easy storyline and great cinematography.
