Rick and Morty (2013)
Just as TV started to go downhill...
Let me just say that I was very skeptical about this show. Judging from the sneak peaks and previews, I assumed this was going to be just another family guy/ Brikleberry lazily animated show with some cheap and low standards. Well gee wizz, I was very very wrong! Rick and Morty might seem like some stupid knock off of Back to the Future or some money laundering scheme as part of late night cable TV, but its not. Behind all the jokes, each episode surprisingly has a strong message and whether you can relate to it or not, you won't really feel like the end of each episode was a bummer.
The weakest aspect is the animation. Its not pretty and seems out dated. Despite this, its hard to say that this pulls the show down. No, not even one bit. The absolutely clever writing and well designed character personalities are basically what this show floats upon.
Unlike many other cartoons that have a sub plot in every episode, the ones in this show are actually relevant and memorable. They aren't just there as fillers and they are nearly as important as the main story. In fact, in most episodes its hard to tell which one is the sub plot and which one is the main plot.
What I'm trying to say is that this show is near perfect. What are you still doing watching new Simpsons and Family guy, go watch this show if you haven't already. Its a great example of how TV hasn't turned to total crap.
Kiru ra kiru: KILL la KILL (2013)
Really stupid and really good
This is that sort of anime that can be serious at times but shouldn't be taken seriously by the audience. Right from the first episode the show loads you with expedition and gets right into the action.
The animations is somewhat rough but impressive although some 3D models of backgrounds look bland but it shouldn't put off the viewer considering that fact that its not the reason they are watching this. The action sequences are the highlights though, they are super stylized and insane to watch.
Considering I only checked this anime out because its made by the same guys who made gurren lagann, i had really high hopes for it. But the thing is that this is not gurren lagann. its different. It doesn't take itself seriously and its more of a parody of every single anime in existence however it still manages to maintain an original story.
All in all, this type of anime is rare. Its silly and surprisingly good. Not to mention the generous amounts of fan service that the creators crammed into every scene.
Also the main character, Ryuko is totally bad ass although really cliché. But for an anime thats full of (good) clichés, its fun to watch.
The Last of Us (2013)
A Legendary Masterpiece
Alright, so we all know that this game is pretty much the culmination of the PS3 and many people love it however, even though I was very satisfied after finishing it, I did encounter lots of problems and flaws on the way.
Apart from the clipping glitches, there was this extremely annoying glitch when enemies close to you disappear and then reappear when you turn your back on them, not only did this cause some frustrating deaths but it also made me think about how much of the game was scripted. There is little room for free roam for a game like this and you are always in a tight area surrounded by walls or debris. This is kind of a bother since the graphics and the environments are very beautiful but you can't explore them all. I understand that this is not a sandbox game like GTA but some more freedom would have been swell.
This is POSSIBLY the most flawed aspect of the game and this is what puts people off; after the amazing and tear jerking prologue, it just goes down hill for 2 hours or so. I found the part between the end of the prologue and the part where you meet Ellie pretty boring and this is when I started to assume that the game really was overrated. I know that that segment was pretty important since it introduced Joel and Tess but it was just not as amusing to play. All it was, was sneaking around to get past security and constantly having one of those long conversations while walking slowly to the next checkpoint. This didn't really put me off that much but there should have been a more entertaining approach to it. There are actually a lot of these walking conversations throughout the game but they are pretty entertaining to watch with Ellie around.
Well I can go on for sometime listing all the flaws in detail however that might make me realize that this game wasn't so grand after all so I might as well just fanboy out and finish this long ass review.
The characters were just amazing! Ellie was clearly the star of the game and we all had to feel sympathy for her at some point. She usually brightened up the mood but also made some bits of the game emotional as well. Joel was also well developed but he seemed kind of one dimensional at times especially near the middle of the game when he couldn't stand Ellie however it was nice to see them get along and care for one another later on. Joel's back story with his daughter was just too good, it was a great way to set the game's mood and was a great first impression of the game. The supporting characters were also amazingly developed. None of them were cliché and they all had a story that we could care about.
The gameplay wasn't too shallow however it wasn't very complex either and I think that thats good for a game such as this since it heavily relies on the story and characters. At some point I just wanted to hear more endless chatter between Ellie and another character without progressing or beating up more gangs or infected. Also melee combat was extremely well done, the screen shaking and blurring made me feel every single grisly hit and it felt good. The only problem was that earlier in the game you were forced to use melee combat against a group of unarmed enemies and it was pretty frustrating since the enemies can attack at once and you can't hit all of them at the same time.
Quite possibly, this was the most beautiful thing my TV has ever displayed. The graphics were just amazing. Where most game developers make their character models and environments look muddy, this game pretty much nails it and makes everything look like a high budget CG movie, heck, even a live action one.
The story clearly is the crown of this game. Even though storytelling isn't the main priority in games, Naughty Dog just took a huge risk and went with it. What could have been an Oscar winning film, is now a legendary PS3 exclusive. The story pretty much follows only one main plot point however every chapter in the game is a separate sub story that still follows the main narrative. There are entire chapter lengths that take an hour to complete and all that the characters achieve is something as simple as obtaining a car battery. Its actually very interesting how the creators can achieve such a high level of rich story telling with such a simple plot to follow.
So pretty much I can go on for ages sharing my thoughts on this game however I won't since my fingers are about to fall off from typing this up, but I just cannot stress enough how amazing this game is. It takes up a very mature and dark theme and makes you embrace every second of it even if you don't like it. If you own a Ps3 and don't have this game then you really are missing out on something. Just go buy it, I don't care if only your 10 year old son plays the PS3, buy it for him then. This game will be on my mind for quite some time and it also changes the way I perceive games now. I can truly understand what people mean when they say that video games are a form of art.
oh, and also this game puts me off other games I own since none of them are even as good. that includes bioshock infinite.
TL;DR: This is a good game, I can totally see why some people don't like it since it has heaps of flaws but its still a masterpiece and I do consider you playing it.
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (2010)
Amazing? Hell yeah
I honestly thought this was going to be a horrible show. It started to appear a lot around the internet but it didn't convince me enough to watch it. One day I found my friend watching it and I was shocked he enjoyed it. He forced me to watch 1 episode and I couldn't even get past the opening.
So one day I decided to actually watch the show and I really enjoyed it. Its funny, original and the songs are catchy. Though this show is supposed to be happy and cherry, it can make you sad and it is dark at times.
The only reason I didn't watch this before was because I hated the original my little pony. I assumed this would be the same pile of crap without even giving it a chance.
And yes, I am a brony now. If you don't like this show, I suggest you give it a chance. Go watch the season 2 finale.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
amazing conclusion
wow, i saw this film early this morning and it was unbelievably entertaining. its a bit long but that would be a good thing since i wanted more of it.
bane is the main antagonist and he is smart. his set up is smart and the crew did a good job with his back story. of course, the joker was still better.
the whole movie seems pretty straight forward. of course batman will stop the villain and save Gotham and that is exactly what happened. however the climax was extremely surprising. it might be the best plot twist i have ever seen. i wont spoil it but boy was it smart.
the best part in the whole movie was when bane was giving his speech and reading Gordon's speech. that was also the most powerful part in the movie. the loud orchestral background music and frequent cut scenes made the movie intense and beautiful... beautiful might not be the right word but what can i say?
so overall this movie was amazing!
Ted (2012)
goes over board with jokes... which is good
This seems like one long family guy episode. well it is.
I loved this film. I wasn't expecting a complex story with many plot twists or intense action scenes. all I wanted was a good laugh. the movie starts strong with a good ol' Jew joke. then the first swear comes in.
the construction of this film is pretty simple; dick joke, fart joke, racist joke, sex joke, dick joke, fart joke, racist joke, sex joke etc. towards the end it actually becomes sad. bad stuff happens to the main characters and the jokes stop coming. that was actually a good decision from Seth. even though the only reason I paid to watch the film was for jokes, the sad moment evened the movie out. so now the movie wasn't just something that was created to let the writers show they are funny. it also showed they had hearts.
good movie, good movie
