Shiva Baby (2020)
Lame Ending!!
I found this film quite entertaining, especially being familiar with the whole Jewish culture. However, the abrupt ending left me cold. It's like the last quarter of the story was missing, just chopped off. I would have liked a little surprise or twist or something. Especially with Max's wife catching on to the affair. That would have extended the running time but would have brought some type of resolution to this 80 minute anxiety fest. I felt like the story was incomplete...what a let down!
Aside from that, the acting was fine and had lots of humorous lines. I wanted to rate it higher but that lame ending knocked off a few points, sadly.
Law & Order: Organized Crime (2021)
Geez, Such Picky Viewers!!
MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW:
I can't believe how many posters are giving this show such horrible reviews! I agree that it's pretty formulaic, has some plot holes and a bit of Wokeness (the black lesbian cop married to her black pregnant partner). But it's only a TV show. Why take it so seriously?
The premise of the storyline may not be extra innovative, but it is NEVER boring. There's non-stop action between the good guys and the bad guys trying to one-up each other and I'm impressed with the acting skills of most characters. McDermott makes a believable mob boss; the hacker babe runs circles around her less tech savvy coworkers; and there are plenty of last-minute double crossing perps that we were not expecting (in the finale, the cop on the take, etc.). I also like how we could see the genuine fear in Richie's face right after his apparent first arrest while working for his dad and the big guys. That's good writing - they could have portrayed him as being tough and fearless, which wouldn't be accurate under his 'newbie' role.
I took off one star for the soundtrack's high volume which sometimes drowns out dialogue.
Anyway, I find this new L&O franchise to be quite entertaining and I'll admit that I'd love for Stabler and Benson to finally "consummate" their repressed years of longing for each other. But I'm aware that if they ended up as a couple it could ruin the excitement of the PROSPECT of a romance. Kind of like Bruce Willis and Cybil Sheppard's romance in Moonlighting (you can google it if you're not familiar, lol).
The Little Things (2021)
Wanted To Like It More, But Enjoyed It Anyway!
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Like many others, I expected more from this movie considering the fabulous cast and the well-constructed trailer. This is one of those films that I truly wanted to LOVE.
I'll list my PROS & CONS, to include the positives and negatives that I may have overlooked in a more general review.
CONS:
Not very original storyline, too much copied from David Fincher's "Sev7en", or Denzel's "Training Day" (both of which included the "retiring-cop-teaching-new-rookie-the-ropes" theme). It was a challenge to convert my mindset to the PRE-smart phone technology of the early '90's, which made the instant communication factor non-existent. Of course that is no one's fault, just frustrating, lol. I guess if the story took place currently, it would have been a completely different plot.
Too much jumpy editing from scene to scene.
Too much focus on Sparma being the sole killer, not including any other tentative perps.
Flashback overkill to inform the viewer how deeply Denzel's unsolved murders were haunting him. It seems they disrupted most scenes where he was alone. We get it, we get it, he's traumatized by his past of unsolved murders and his accidental killing of the female victim.
Big plot hole with Jimmy trusting Sparma by turning his back on him while digging the holes. Actually, trusting Sparma enough to get into his car in the first place is not believable, especially with Jimmy believing Sparma was the killer. It was out of his character to make himself that vulnerable.
On a technical note, I could not hear some of the dialogue no matter how high I added volume...like the characters were mumbling or speaking too fast. It must be a technical issue that was not intentional.
Could have been 30 mins. shorter to tell the exact same story.
PROS
Story was interesting enough to keep me guessing about Sparma's involvement in the murders.
Denzel buying the red barrette for Jimmy (sneakily) to help him with closure and maybe lessen Jimmy's guilt. That was a clever and unique plot device, imho.
Unlike other viewers, I don't feel that Jared Leto was overacting. His creepy character was convincing to me.
I'll add more points to my review later if I think of any.
Mindhunter (2017)
This entire season could have been consolidated into only 7 episodes.
As perfect as the casting was for the actors portraying the various serial killers, this season dragged on too long with the Atlanta Child Murders story. This show excels when it shows the serial killers being interviewed and questioned. The Atlanta arc took way too long, especially all the whining done by the parents of the missing kids. Of course I have empathy for them, but they monopolized too much time and threw a wrench into the format we got used to in Season 1.
Too much melodrama and not enough creepy vibes ala Fincher style. Like others have stated, the Tench family drama also got too much airtime. I was getting stressed watching Tench and his chain smoking, while hopping on and off planes and almost missing a few flights, only to see no progress being made with his son's communicating and his wife going off the deep end.
I DID like how Carr's brief fling transpired, but it didn't add much to the overall season.
If there is a Season 3, let's hope for more of the Season 1 style format - hardcore serial killer interviews rather than personal dramas with each character.
Still very entertaining and so well acted. ALL actors on this show are phenomenal and convincing!
PLEASE, less fillers in Season 3! Looks like up to 5 seasons are being planned, but who knows if that'll happen.
