Tenet (2020)
Could have been good...
What a mess this movie is. I watched it on demand which meant I could stop and rewind when I was confused, which was often. I enjoyed some of the action sequences and the movie would have been better if it stuck to that without all that "inversion" BS. After awhile I stopped paying attention and just wanted it to end because I WAS interested in seeing how things turned out. Film buffs may find the last part interesting with the combination of forward and backward special effects. I must be dim-witted because I still don't understand how the world was saved, ("spoiler")...
Big Little Lies (2017)
Overall pretty good but...,
I enjoyed this show pretty well. Loved the horrid backstabbing and being able to judge their lack of character and integrity! Guilty pleasure, I'll admit. Seriously though, these people were extremely flawed for the most part. Even though I found out the ending before I finished the last three episodes, I still found it intriguing. Beautiful settings with beautiful people doing wretched things. Makes me glad to be a poor "nobody" with no real social status. I hear they're plugging for a second season, and I'm glad. I do want to see their further adventures. My only real problem with this show was the soundtrack! The children were listening to music most children would NOT find interesting and it was obviously chosen to indulge someone on the production team. Sorry, kids are not going to have the patience to listen to that crap. Even at the end, when some of the characters had to sing Elvis songs as part of a talent show, it seemed like they picked the most obscure and dreariest songs they could find. Maybe I'm not sophisticated enough to appreciate it, but I found myself kind of muting a lot that stuff. The habit of moving the story along with flashbacks got old as well. I would recommend it, but please creators of this show - DON'T TORTURE US WITH THAT OLD MUSIC!!!
Emerald City (2016)
A poor man's "Game of Thrones"
If George R. R. Martin had written "The Wizard of Oz", Emerald City is what you'd get. I was a bit disappointed in this. I probably won't continue watching, despite the interesting landscapes and costumes. It was filmed in Spain for much of it. You can tell a lot of money was spent on the sets and costumes. But I found it to be dark and charmless. Maybe I'm not hip or cool enough to appreciate it. Vincent D'Orofrio's screeching performance as the Wizard didn't help. There are a lot of dark and disturbing images in this "re-imaging" of the beloved tale. I was only intrigued by Dorothy's past and what happened with her mother. That story line may be interesting. But I'll probably take a pass on this one...
Fury (2014)
Pretty good, but very violent...
I liked it. Some of the other reviewers seemed to think it was very unrealistic. Perhaps the story line is, but I think the "hell" that is war was on point. LOTS of swearing and blown off legs, heads, etc., but this is what war is probably like. Even the obnoxious character, played by Jon Bernthal was heroic in the end. Nice to see Shia LaBeouf appear somewhat likable. Most met honorable ends. I guess it was kind of corny to see Logan Lerman's character "become a man" in more ways than one. Yes there are several clichés, but I could overlook it. I put on my Amazon wish list, but I'm not sure how often I would watch it again. It's rather intense at times.
Straight Into Darkness (2004)
Could have been better
I caught this on broadcast TV. At first it captivated me and I wanted to see more. But then as it wore on, I got more and more turned off by the two soldiers/characters. One was a psychopathic jerk, while the "sensitive" one didn't seem to have any balls. His constant flashbacks to his past became quite annoying. The station I watched it on didn't cue it right between commercials. So it started it wrong and repeated a good portion of what it had shown before. I saw that I wouldn't see the ending, and realized I didn't really care. The only reason I tried is that it got a decent Rotten Tomatoes score, somehow. IMDb's rating seems much more accurate. Maybe it got better in the second half - I'll probably never know...
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
Wait for the "dollar theater" or video release, if you must see it.
Spoiler alert: Earth isn't conquered, but Vivica dies, (yay!) Very disappointed with this one. We wasted money on the 3D version and there was not much worth looking at in 3D. Some of it was slow and boring, but mostly it was just one cliché after another. Script consists of a lot of "eye-rolling" moments and is poorly done. The only character I really liked or cared for was a murderous Warlord - what does that tell you. Almost hoping for Earth to be destroyed or something, so the torture would end. It's hours I can never get back. It's not the WORSE movie I've ever seen, but just a waste of time. Although the "Queen Alien" was a tiny bit interesting, overall it's just too hokey to recommend. Will Smith certainly dodged a bullet with this one.
