Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
The real adaptation
Based on the then available games, this should have been the first movie made back in 2002. While entertaining, the Jovovich series were a complete departure tonally and story wise from the main source material of the time.
Welcome to Raccoon city is a movie that at times feels like it was made during the late 90s early 00s. It doesn't stray far away from the tone and story of the first 2 games it's based on, it makes a perfect mix of them both into one movie providing characters from both games, no unnecessary gender woke swaps that has become a modern trend (although keeping up with the modern trends most of the male characters if not villains, are written as a**h**les or incompetent) and the movie doesn't go full big on unnecessary cgi, keeping things grounded at a small scale that works perfectly combined with nice atmospheric directing and photography. Story wise if I have to nitpick on something, the whole orphanage subplot with the deformed girl stuck out and didn't do much to the plot. Otherwise this is a solid entry and highly recommended for the old fans of the first 2 games back in the 90s.
Best F(r)iends: Volume 1 (2017)
Neo Noir and David Lynch meet Tommy Wiseu
A well executed homemade production. Sestero and Wiseu unite again on screen after 15 years, to tell a quality neo noir story with some shades of David Lynch to it. The strange direction, weird character behaviors and motivations, intentional or not, create an eerie atmosphere that keeps you invested in the story until the very end. The corky persona of Wiseu matches the tone of the film and adds extra strangeness to the proceedings. Do not expect to see a "Room" quality film here. You will be surprised.
BloodRayne II: Deliverance (2007)
A Wasted Opportunity
Cowboys and Vampires...An original and awesome premise thats completely gone to waste by poor execution. An obvious low budget attempt (nothing wrong with that) with wobbly camera work, dreary, badly light cinematography, bland to no action (Uwe Boll usually has a good eye at directing action scenes..what happened?) and as a whole..just boring...the one redeeming factor is Natassia Malthe as Bloodrayne . She is perfectly cast and has the physique for the role but unfortunately she isn't given to much to do due to a poor script.
The Wicker Man (2006)
Underrated
I watched this back to back with the superior original 1973 version. Its underrated and definitely not as bad as it's reputation. It stays close enough to the original screenplay with a few updates and twists. The 1973 version is obviously the clear winner out of the 2 but there is still a good film here to be rediscovered. I believe the movie has fallen victim to bad overexposure via online reviews and YouTubers that tend to copy each other and follow a trend of burying films over minor issues. Yes everyone knows the now infamous "not the bees" scene and the 2 scenes where Nicolas Cage kicks and punches 2 women...but really, are these moments really sooo jaw dropping that you have to make an entire video about them? The aforementioned scenes amount to 10 seconds and are what the entire movie is usually made fun about and judged for. The performance by Nicolas Cage is corky and a bit over the top...but it's Nicolas Cage we are talking about..that's his style of acting, while unusual as always, it's solid.
Predator 2 (1990)
Underrated
A totally underrated sequel that slightly expands on the concept, offers a fresh new story, not trying to replicate the original, is fast paced with great direction and camera angles, nice action and a likeable hero. Danny Glover rocks!
The Invisible Man (2020)
Overrated
Overrated, not scary and 20 minutes too long. Watch Hollow Man instead.
Alone in the Dark (2005)
Underrated
The movie could have worked much better on so many levels, if the tone was similar to that of the original video games. Survival Horror. Instead, what we got, is a loud action movie with guns and explosions that is fun and easy to watch, great soundtrack, cool bullet time scenes, fast pace and a great ending. Unfortunately we did not get a horror movie, but for what it is, it's entertaining. Not all movies have to be Citizen Kane. Switch off your brain for 90 minutes and enjoy yourself. Worst movie ever made? Definitely no, check Asylum and Corman produced movies for that.
Titan A.E. (2000)
Underrated
One of the most Underrated films ever made. As Sci Fi goes, the story might not be too original, but this does not spoil the viewing experience at all. The production, voice acting, animation and general execution is top notch. Worth watching and owning for your collection. Fox Animation had huge potential to rival the Overrated Disney.
High Score (2020)
Political agenda inserts for no reason
The series is ok, as mentioned before, AVGN and many other YouTubers have done a way better job chronicling the video game history. Some of the episodes halfway take a weird turn out of the blue and focus on diversity/political agenda that feels disjointed from the main focus of the series and sticks out.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
A great Drama Action flick
While Rambo 4 ended the saga in the best of ways, having him eventually return home in peace, this unneeded sequel is not as bad as some reviews claim to be. Behind the violence, this movie tells a touching and very personal story of Rambo dealing with loss. Sure the movie could have been much better and the series should have just ended with 4...but seeing Rambo once again on the screen in 2019 is a treat. A great Drama action film with Stallone giving a great performance once more. A+
