Runaway Train (1985)
I say, Yeah!
Yeah, it is an action-adventure type film, but it is one of the most powerful ones. It will take you to the depth of human existence, you will ask what is the meaning of all these. What is the difference between the winner and the loser? What is the difference between the cop and the criminal? There is no difference in the wider perspective. The fate is same, they are doomed to the same end after all the fight, no one wins. This ending was the most fitting one. There could not be anything better than this. The realization comes from isolation in the compartment of runaway train. It is an amazing character study. The three human beings are forced to look deep into the abyss of human nature in the most trying situation, being pushed to the brink of life and death.
Raja Natwarlal (2014)
Full of flaws - worthless, don't waste your time on it.
At the base it is the story of a big-hearted con robbing people who had become rich by fraud. But he does not do it for his own profit, he gives it away in charity and things like that. This whole thing looked totally foolish and cheap to me, it is not at all realistic - real people will never do like this. This whole idea of glorifying a criminal and showing him successful is an age-old cheap trick of making money. In my view both Ratwarlal and Wardha Yadav are criminals and the persons from whom Wardha has misappropriated all the money also must be criminals only. It happens just like that in the criminal world ecosystem. There is no point in making one of them a hero and the other a villain. Moreover it is all happening too easily, people are going to South Africa (When they don't have much money), they are setting up fake banks etc. etc. It is just another piece of good guy- bad guy sort of feel good stuff from bollywood. It is too much manipulative. Emraan Hashmi looked odd in the role, compared to him the other guys have performed much better. The songs and background music were irritating to me. The story-line of their campaign was dynamic and at least kept us following. But overall direction was very poor. You will find hundreds of con films much much better than this all over the world. Don't waste your time on this piece of trash.
3 Idiots (2009)
Totally artificial- a piece of cheap propaganda.
Personally I was totally shocked by the stupidity of this work, for I had heard so many people praising it like anything. It has been made with a social agenda which is very much genuine and praiseworthy. But nothing goes correct in the representation. They have picked up some stars and gone for more glamor than realism. They have made a perfect hero and a perfect villain which itself a trait of poor film-making. A really good film should not tell clearly "hey this is the 'good guy' and look that one is the 'bad guy'". It should be able to see some good in the 'bad guy' and also some bad in the 'good guy'. Real life does never have perfect heroes and perfect villains, all people are imperfect. This film has has stooped to that cheap superficiality of a crowd-puller. From the beginning till the end they have gone with a motive, there has been no spontaneity. Only redeeming feature has been probably the pleasing musicals. My rating : 4/10 - rotten
Jaatishwar (2014)
A musical to remember for long time to come
It is a nice fusion of Bengali-Hindu cultures from two ages separated long apart. We, present day people have very little idea of the olden folk poets and their religious and cultural works. This film has a lot of historical significance in that context also. A person of very remote origin can also thrive and mix into a particular culture if he really loves it. Underlying the cultural scenario there is the eternal story of love between a man and a woman. But it has never stooped to cheap sentimentalism, which is everywhere so prevalent nowadays. It may be a bit inconvenient for other than Bengal origin people to appreciate the true spirit of the nineteenth century folk literature. But the appeal of the movie can truly be universal even with subtitles.
The Lunchbox (2013)
A piece of easy elegance, must watch
It is a simple story told in a simple way, about real common people, not stars. It does neither pretend nor preach anything. Two representatives of the lower middle class society are found to get lost into a world of fantasy, probably riding a wrong train of chance. There is a lot of pure humor that will refresh the viewer's mind. It is a welcome break from the insipid tradition of Bollywood stardom. There is no artificial emotional cliché to spoon-feed the crowd. In its anti-climatic conclusion also it has been very much unique and spontaneous, because this unique story does not demand a conventional climax. In a long way it reminded me of Eran Kolirin's The Band's Visit which also in its own way gives ultimate respect to the eternity of common man and his daily life. My rating : 8 out of 10
Days of Heaven (1978)
I wish there had been more films like this one !
It is a sad story of imperfect people and the tragedy of their life. The unfortunate situation of a triangular love affair has been portrayed very sensitively. The greatness of this work lies in the fact that it has remained faithful to the cruel reality of life through all its length. Never ever has the director tried to adorn it with any fake idealism. Life is imperfect, nobody is ideal, perfection is not the nature of creation. That is why the days of Heaven do not last long, it comes to an end, a sad end which fills your mind with melancholy. People are flawed, there is the devil inside them and they are irresistibly drawn towards their own peril. But you cannot just hate any of them totally in a straightforward manner. All the time you would wish that this evil should not have befallen these people. But as it happens, you search for a ray of hope in all this darkness just as the narrator of the film, the little girl does. There is no affirmation that she finds that redeeming hope, there is only an urge for it. Whether the viewer finds any light of redemption depends on his own perception of this artistic masterpiece, that is a subjective matter.
Le fils de l'autre (2012)
A movie of undying optimism
This is about the journey of of two young men from a unfortunate beginning to a life to cherish. It is not a film about two families, in the end it is about the whole world, about the human kind in totality. The story is set in the perspective of Israel-Palestine conflict. The two young men are forced into a state of severe identity crisis. They question their existence in society. But ultimately they find the answer. If they are living each-others' lives, then they should do that for the best. That is the affirmation of human capability for good. The conflict between nations is a manipulated enmity, there is no rivalry among common men. This is the inner social message conveyed.
Le fils (2002)
A Movie about being human
A subtle work of Dardenne Brothers that conveys some very deep conflicting impulses of two human beings in crisis. A bereaved father is torn between the desire to take revenge and the desire to give affection. Suffering humanity yarns for shelter and finds it in the ultimate grace of forgiveness. The directors have kept hope in human capability to do things that cannot be explained by common logic. The complex emotions have been conveyed through the minute details of the very common daily life. No air of sentimentalism or artificiality is there. Not much happens throughout the film and not much is said too, still it will impress you if you appreciate the depth within the apparent simplicity.
Vozvrashchenie (2003)
film of powerful eeriness...you just cannot forget it !
The film has explored a very deep psychological complexity and has done it most elegantly and flawlessly. There are only three human beings for the most part of the film and for a large part they are lost and isolated in wilderness. The transition of two boys from boyhood to manhood is the main theme. Their relationship with their little-known father is very intense, as intense as in an animal level. There is conflict, hatred and also blind obedience. Underneath all the passing emotions there is something deep inside, a feeling of love. The juvenile actors have superbly represented the fine nuances of emotional conflict and crisis. It could not be any better than that. The behavior of the humans lost in the wild is as mysterious as the mysterious nature itself. There is something inexplicable, something you have to feel but cannot be said in words. The air of mystery will haunt you. You cannot just sit easy and enjoy, it is not a movie of that kind.
It may be a difficult film to watch, but it is certainly much more difficult to forget.
Le gamin au vélo (2011)
Take a bow Dardenne Bros.
A perfect art-house film, loved it to the full. The directors have explored the psychology of a disturbed and rebellious child with ultimate care and love, with so much affection as Samantha had for him. But nowhere they have stooped to cheap sentimentalism. The ultimate realism throughout the film has made it a masterpiece. We have seen the murder of innocence by human indifference and cruelty. But above all what wins is hope. Unconditional kindness of love can heal all wounds of this cruel world. That is the ultimate grace of human existence. Many people will say that it lacks a solid plot. But does this kind of artistic work really need much story??? It says best as it says in fewest words. I loved the last scene where the boy turns and goes away on his bike, he has seen so much of the extremes of man. The ending could not be any better.
