Hinterland (2021)
Less is more
What I really liked about the film was the background story (espeacially the time frame) and the choice of the cast.
The plot itself sometimes feels draggy and some parts are completely unnessecary, whereas other fragments are not logical or didn't got enough of attention/development
The art style (or should I say the CGI) in the background sometimes is very distracting or doesn't mix well with the
real life elements of the scene.
The last thing I want to mention is, that many aspects of the film feel very forced. Either the director/screenwriter didn't believe in his own creation/the cast or the producers were interfering in his work. What do I mean by that?
Giving or showing the audience extra scenes for things should've already figure out themselves (if they were paying attention)
and the name dropping typical austrian/vienesse culutural speacialties, like locations, food or local terms.
All in all, it was an average film experience. Not very entertaining but far from bad.
BoJack Horseman (2014)
Perfect 10 ...or IS IT (question mark?)
Proclaimer: This series ended a few days ago and I didn't start rewatching the whole series yet to get a better in-depth look, so maybe my opinion changes later on
For people who are new to the series: I won't tell you what is great about this series (there are plenty enough of those reviews here) and you should figure it out yourself. But I urge you to try, start/keep watching it and not read any further.
I consider this series to be one of the best (if not the best so far) I've ever seen. Of course there are series out there which could compete with the quality of this one (in its own way), but they often have major flaws throughout the plots.
They often end up getting a 9/10 from me. Like, Breaking Bad for example (also starring Aaron Paul), was great till the last season. The plot of Todd's Nazi family (BB's Todd, not to mix up with Bojack's Todd) was too cheap.
So I tried really hard to remember and think of any major flaws, which may occur in BoJack Horseman. The best I could come up with is the "Todd-Quirkness". You know, this classic Todd situations and adventures, where things run an unbelievable path or wouldn't turn out that way in reality.
It becomes a trademark for the series itself, and they started to spread it out to almost every character, like "Okay, we have a P.C. story plot here. How can we add some quirky, irrational trait in this scenario". For the most part it is okay for Todd and fine in small doses for other characters, but it starts to get old fast, when (a) whole character(s) becomes simply "Todd-quirky", as it was in the case of Paige & Max (the old-timey reporter detectives) in S06. God, I found them annoying. And I'm curious, if this will age well all together.
How a series turns out like, which is almost entirely "Todd-quirky", you can clearly see in "Tuca & Bertie", also animated (and created) by Lisa Hanawalt, which was way over the top, most of the time.
But I wouldn't say that this is a major dealbreaker for BoJack Horseman. I am always impressed how they manage to give us such realistic character features and depressing stories not leading us abandoning it all together, rather keep us all interested and sympathize with the characters. Furthermore helping us, to cope with our problems better in real life.
So, there you have it. In my opinion a well deserved 10/10
Silicon Valley (2014)
Good show, but it seems to overstayed its welcome
When I started watching this series, between the end of season 1 and the release of season 2 , I couldn't ever imagine rating this less than a nine. Writing this after the finale, it deserves at least a seven.
What it made great was the perfect mixture between the realism, of what it's like to work in the valley (mainly thanks to the background of the show creator Mike Judge), and the comedic aspect, delivered by a very talented cast, which consist mainly of great stand-up comedians
The jokes and stories were perfectly set, to a degree where people without any technical knowledge could follow the development of the company and still be entertained
So, why didn't it get a solid 10?
As many users described before, the plot started to repeat itself constantly around season 3, in a way, that right before the fate of the company seems to be hopeless, some random event happens, so the situation turns around in an instant. This occurs far too often to be believable.
Also, the plot wasn't adding any more quirks of the valley and started to focus too much on the character's role inside the company and the state of the company itself, with a little Hooli B-Story beside. (compare S01/02 with S05)
And of course the development of certain characters, like Big Head, Erlich and Jared.
Big Head was transformed from an okay-coder, who is aware of the actions around him, to a complete useless washout who just became lucky.
Erlich wasn't very useful for the progress of the story (from S04 on), so he just stuck around in the background without purpose (sometimes together with Big Head), till T.J. Miller left the series
Jared, who is a nice and loveable business professional, working right under the Hooli-CEO Gavin Belson, became so depended on Richard and too pitiable, when people around him treated him like crap.
Nevertheless, I was very entertained all the years and it is a little sad to see such a brilliant series go
