The Florida Project (2017)
Made Good Time feel like a good time.
Equal parts horrifying and fascinating. I spent half the movie furious at parents who are so ill equipped for the job and basically turning their children into feral animals. The other half of the time I was able to turn off my disgust and relate to the kids and their innocence and their ability to turn even the worst situations into fun filled adventures. Something gets lost to us as adults that we have to be reminded of through the eyes of children. Who doesn't get nostalgic thinking back to a time when the worry of how the bills get paid was beyond our scope and all we had to think about was those glorious 3 months of freedom, however dire the reality of the situation.
The film was absolutely gorgeous to look at. Huge attention was paid to a color palette drenched in purples, pinks, and uber-saturation. The sunsets. The rainbows. It was as if a tropical flower were blooming before our very eyes, belying the fact that it was sprouting up from the manure of human existence.
Parallel Chords (Overture) (2015)
Beautiful and jarring
This short film is beautifully shot and does a great job of depicting the inner turmoil of a young woman. While her father's desire for her to pursue a musical path could be called singular, driven, and focused it could also be seen as obsessive and maddening. His lip quivers and he wrings his hands, in recognition of his own limitations, seeking to overcome them through his offspring. It's a hell of burden to place on anyone. Her own passions overshadowed and yearning to break free, we see her struggle and feel it as if it were our own. It's not necessarily a comfortable feeling.Expect to feel the jagged edges... the jarring, fragmented pieces of a young life seeking approval and only granted temporary reprieve and rest.
