The Walking Dead (2010)
Started from the top
The Walking Dead was one of my favorite shows when it first started. The first season is excellent. It had the right amount of characters with a good mix of action and story line.
The show has slowly gotten worse every year. I gave it up to this season before I stopped watching completely. Episodes drag now and there are far too many boring characters.
I understand they're still making comic books and this show could go on for another 10 years or more, but AMC needs to change something or they will continue to lose viewers.
Breaking Bad (2008)
Television at its peak
Although I've never watched an episode of GOT, I believe Breaking Bad is the best dark dramedy ever put on television. If the vastly underrated pilot episode doesn't hook you, then I don't know what will. Breaking Bad is almost too good to describe.
Stranger Things (2016)
It's like the 80's came back
A wonderful throwback to 80's blockbuster classics such as ET and Goonies. The first season is far better than the second, but still enjoyable. Every actor is excellent. The casting director doesn't get the credit they deserve.
If you can't find something to like about 'Stranger Things', you're probably not a pleasant person to be around. Bravo, Duffer Bros.
Dark (2017)
Well Done
Dark is a very well done sci-fi drama series. Be prepared though, it challenges its viewers with it's endless characters list and story lines. The slow burn wasn't an issue with me at all. Really hope they do a second season.
Atypical (2017)
Refreshing
Atypical is a refreshing, not over the top look at a middle class American family who have an autistic high school son. It's funny, entertaining, heart felt and informative. Performances are excellent all around and there isn't a single weak episode. Looking forward to S2.
Vice Principals (2016)
HBO McBride 2.0
So HBO decides to capitalize off Eastbound & Down's success by green lighting another Danny McBride show where he basically plays the same character. Cheap idea, but whatevs.
Vice Principals is certainly watchable, but in the end will be forgettable. After watching the entire series very few moments or episodes stand out to me.
Django Unchained (2012)
Outstanding Cinema
If you like Tarantino, you'll love Django. If you don't then don't waste your time watching.
Django Unchained is filmmaking at its finest for me. Tarantino's first spaghetti western delivers everything you want in the genre; great action, great music, great characters and a great revenge story.
The performances are all good, but IMO Leo DiCaprio and Sam Jackson steal the movie.
Mr. Church (2016)
Eddie Murphy's finest work in years
Pleasantly surprising and good. It's obvious what you're getting into before seeing Mr. Church. A black man becomes a prominent figure in a white family. What the writers and actors do from there decides how the audience will react. They nailed it. There's so much depth to the two main characters. In the end you love them both. This movie did everything set out to do, except probably make more money at the box office.
I, Tonya (2017)
Gold Medal
The trailer for I, Tonya was all I needed to see to want to watch this. Rarely when I have high expectations for a film do I end up really enjoying it. This wasn't the case here.
I, Tonya is very well acted and directed. We all know the story. I re-watched the 30 for 30 ESPN documentary a week before seeing this to jog my memory. Like the doc, I Tonya leaves it to the viewer to decide whether Harding was involved in the crime or not. And that's the way it should be.
The Open House (2018)
Don't waste your time
This is why you check average ratings before watching a movie. Only reason we watched was because we liked Dylan Minnette in the series '13 Reasons Why'. He basically plays the same person in this. The films biggest problem is the writing though. There is no plot. Skip this trash.
Dumb and Dumber To (2014)
Expectations too high
As many others have stated, I was REALLY looking forward to this being a huge fan of the original Dumb & Dumber. In fact, I have that movie rated 10/10 and I believe it to be not only one of the greatest comedies of all time, but one of the greatest comedic performances of all time. I miss that Jim Carrey.
I didn't want to admit it but after seeing this I can safely say the Farrelly Brothers have lost their touch. What made Dumb & Dumber, There's Something About Mary and Kingpin so special were not only the memorable characters and sharp writing but the heart they had. DD2 has no heart. Harry & Lloyd just weren't as likable and 9/10 of their jokes fell flat. The story wasn't nearly as engaging either as the original either.
The opening is arguably the best scene of the film and gave much hope for what was in store. Harry visits Lloyd who's been committed for 20 years, only to find out he's been playing a prank on him the whole time. Unfortunately this was revealed in the trailer as pretty much all the funniest scenes were. Then we get to re-visit Lloyd & Harry's apartment and Billy from unit 4-C, which was great homage, but nothing memorable happens. We're introduced to Harry's new cat, Butthole, who's named that because he has a butthole? OK?? Then we meet Harry's new roommate Ice Pick (played by Bill Murray if you didn't recognize the voice) who is a meth manufacturer. Again, sounds like it would be funny, but isn't. The dialog in the apartment in the original is so classic and quotable. "We have no food. We have no jobs. OUR PETS HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!" "Not a single job in town.. Ya, unless you wanna work 40-hours a week!" "I'm talking about a little place called Asssssspen.. I don't know, Lloyd, the French are a$$holes." That's another thing the sequel terribly lacks.. Memorable quotes.
When the body of the story begins we're introduced to some very uninteresting/unfunny characters. I guess Rob Riggle was OK. The funnel nuts scene was alright. Again though, no heart and nothing memorable. Nothing ever touches the awesomeness of the Seabass scene, Lloyd backtracking a tad, the rat poisoning, the moped or spending the night outdoors in Colorado. "Maybe you should wear these extra gloves. My hands are getting sweaty... Ya, we're in the Rockies (looks at Harry like he's an idiot just for asking)" In DD2 we get a stupid fart game and Rob Riggle getting a quick, more shocking than funny death. The firecracker prank was the funniest part of the road trip.
Then our characters reach their destination to locate Harry's daughter. In order to appear intelligent they wear a pair of graduation robes with dipolomas in their hand. Again, extremely lazy writing. How iconic were the orange & blue tuxedo's Harry & Lloyd wear to blend in with high society in the original? The ending pretty much dragged and then it ends with Lloyd telling a lame joke and bushing a couple hot chicks into a bush. Another lazy gag, incomparable to the hilarious & memorable Bikini tour bus in the original.
Overall I was highly disappointed with DD2, but I did somewhat enjoy it just to see the characters that I love so much again. I do not blame Carrey & Daniels for it sucking so bad. I blame the Farrelly Brothers and honestly feel bad for them. DD2 will forever be known as one of the worst sequels of all time to me.
Funny People (2009)
All over the place
The Judd Apatow dramedy Funny People is indeed a difficult film to review. I praise it's originality, but overall there's just too much going on.
1. Adam Sandler is terrific in the first half of the film. I love when he takes on these darker characters. This film really is an ode to how talented we sometimes forget he is. Grown Ups and Jack & Jill will do that. His performance here is among his best though.
2. I'm not huge into stand-up comedy. I enjoy it moderately. Guys like Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams consistently make me laugh. I realize those guys are legends, but I must say I found the stand-up in this to be AWFUL. Is this really what stand-up has become? Unfunny penis, fart & sex jokes? Pretty cheap laughs if you ask me. Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler are FAR funnier in character than stand-up. I found myself laughing much more at them during their conversations. Aubrey Plaza (female rapper) & Aziz Ansari's (Cold Stone) stand-up scenes were cringe worthy bad for me. And the reception from the audience in the film seemed the total opposite. I just don't get how people find that crap funny.
3. Not sure what Judd Apatow was thinking while writing the second half of Funny People. Was he desperate to give his wife and daughters some screen time? Why go from an intriguing, humorous, deep, dark script (made up for the stand-up) to a boring, drawn out drama? I felt a lot like Adam Sandler felt while watching Appatow's daughters "Cats" performance in the second half, looking at my phone & being bored. Rogen & Sandler both seemed wiped out the second half. And Eric Bana & Leslie Mann's story was just very uninteresting and I really didn't care what happened to the characters.
4. The ending doesn't really tie anything together at all. Mann chooses to stay with her husband (aw, that's sweet). Sandler makes amends to Rogen, even though Rogen was nothing but helpful to him. Really dull ending, but would've been more effective had the Mann/Bana scenes been cut down and they would've focused more on the LA story in the last half hour or so.
5/10 and I'm being nice. The first half is enjoyable and some of Sandler's best work.
