The Tomorrow War (2021)
Perfect Summer Blockbuster!
It's not a comic book movie or an award winner or a rom-com. It's a fun action movie with great cgi aliens & Chris Pratt. Yes, there are a couple of plot holes. But overall, a great summer escape.
Yesterday (2019)
Could've Been Hokey, Turned Out Great!
I went into this wondering if they were going to explain the whole premise with it being a dream or such? Was he going to get caught and crucified for it? Was he going to get the girl, lose the girl? So many movies are fixated on realism and difficulties and negativity. Yes, he faces several difficulties. But, the movie is light and beautiful with fantastic music. If I want realism, I watch a documentary. This is what I go to the movies for. Really well done!
Nowhere Safe (2014)
Good Story, Very Relevant to Today's Social Climate
I'm not sure why other reviewers considered this movie unrealistic, other than the daughter being allowed to take such a public stand at the end of the movie. But, the vindictiveness and mob mentality portrayed in this was spot on. The relationship between the mother and daughter was healthy and realistic. The contention between the oddball (history) teacher and the administration was very realistic. And, if you've ever lived in a small, rural town, being demonized and horrifically harassed was exactly what a personal friend experienced just a couple years ago. This was a very good story that was well acted with a great message.
Marigold (2007)
Wonderful Hindi Movie in English!
Marigold is not your typical Bollywood masala movie; it's a straight-up romance with a couple of beautiful song and dance scenes. What makes this movie worth watching is Marigold's growth and Prem's gentleness. Ali Larter does an amazing job starting as a complete b****, but taken out of her comfort zone and dependant on the graciousness of Indian culture, let's her find who she wants to be. Salman Khan is at his sweetest best in this film - gentle and gracious, honest and straightforward, and a little vulnerable. No, he doesn't lose his shirt in this one and there are no fight scenes (like I said, not masala). The end is predictable and a bit drawn out, but sweet nonetheless. If you are interested in Indian culture and movies but struggle with subtitles (never do dubbed, you lose so much that way), start with Marigold and Bride and Prejudice.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)
Great Movie except messed up Storm Shadow Story
Especially if you read the pre-book, the twists near the end give you a big WOW, something I didn't expect.
I was just expecting a fun action movie with some nostalgic value from my childhood and it delivered so much more.
The only seen that I really didn't like was the chase seen they show you so much of in the commericals. It was too long, and didn't really do much for the story, they could have edited 10 minutes out of it and the movie would actually have been better. But then again, it's GI Joe, so you have to have some hochiness...
HOWEVER, what could almost made me give this a 5 was the whole Storm Shadow story. The true story is great, and Zartan is in the movie. The real story is so much better then what they came up with and it would not have taken any more time to tell. That's my review without spoilers, don't read on if you don't like spoilers ... spoiler alert.... Don't continue any more if you don't want a spoiler.
They kill Storm Shadow????????????? Or at least they make it look very much like they do. Hopefully in the next movie he comes out of the ice water, you can't kill Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes would NEVER do that. For true Gi Joe fans, this leaves a very, very soar taste in our mouths.
The twists with the Baroness being Dukes ex-girlfriend and cobra commander being Dukes ex-girlfriends supposedly dead brother almost make up for killing Storm Shadow. But killing one of the best characters of all time never makes sense.
