Choigoui Yeonin (2015)
Nothing but tropes.
I'm writing to let you know that this series peaks in episode 4.
Positives:
The main 2 actors could act; you might perceive "chemistry" between them in some scenes. The child actor did a fair job with his scenes. The music was not distracting. The clothes were fun (lots of fancy dresses and dapper suits). The sets and camera work were great.
Negatives:
The main antagonistic sneared and laughed through the majority of his scenes; he was practically a cartoon character (actually most animated villains are written better). The secondary female characters were flat and were sad 99% of the time.
The plot was chaos. Flashbacks came at jarringly random times. Overall the writing could have been done by a highschooler who had seen nothing but Kdramas. So much "suspension of belief" that it strains the viewer.
Love Is Blind (2016)
A good movie if you like happy endings.
If you enjoy Hallmark movies, this Pilipino movie might be up your alley.
This movie has a rough start; I didn't like any of the characters at the beginning. But as the characters develop and grow, they each become less annoying and more endearing.
The theme of the movie is pretty heavy-handed, but I still found the movie enjoyable. (FYI I've only seen a few tagalog movies.)
Jack of the Red Hearts (2015)
Mother of Autistic Child Approved
Because I have two young autistic boys (6 and 4), I was curious to see how an autistic child was portrayed in a film. It was superbly done. Props to Taylor Richardson for her acting skills.
This is a movie about two families. The first is a small, broken family of two orphaned sisters; the elder (Jack, 18) wants to do anything to be with her younger sister. Even if it means breaking the law.
The second family revolves around 11-year-old Glory who is autistic and essentially non-verbal; the entire family is impacted by these difficulties. As the movie progresses, you get a glimpse of the daily experiences in the family: therapy appointments, school challenges, bedtime struggles, food issues, sensory drives and distractions, the neurotypical child getting less attention because the autistic one needs more, spousal exhaustion and conflict, and the joy of the seemingly small achievements that are years in the waiting.
Jack is well written and her background provides the perfect plot for showing a character experiencing an autistic child for the first time. Kay (the mother) might come across as weird and overprotective, but I think most mothers of autistic children would relate to her; I do (although Kay's verbal filter seems to be lacking).
There is only one part of the movie that I HATED. Kay has a brief conversation with another mother whose child has transitioned to mainstream school and Kay uses the word "recovered." It blaringly revealed how Kay believes autism is a disease that needs to be healed or disorder that has an end. This fallacy is never addressed. (Please have patience with me.) People who have autism have a variety of challenges that neurotypical people do not, however all people have to learn how to cope with life in their own way; some autistic people just need guidance finding ways to deal with things that regular people figure out without having to be directly taught. For example, spoons: Neurotypical people quickly learn to abide spoons because of classical conditioning (spoon leads to food/reward); some autistic people find the spoon itself to be too much of a distraction/torment and the food not enough of a reward. (Ok. I'll get off my soapbox now. Thanks.)
Enjoy the movie. It is a very unique drama.
Sulryulhwan (2015)
Bingeworthy
I watched this entire series very late at night. I had intended to watch an episode or two on Netflix, but I got hooked and watched it all. Since it's a mini-series, it was like watching an extra long movie.
I know I am biased, because I already love KDrama. However, I would recommend it to anyone who already likes KDramas or anyone wanting to test the waters of KDramas. It's brevity is a plus for the latter, while long-time fans will enjoy some of my favorite TV tropes.
Even though many elements of the story are familiar to me, the main plot is wonderfully unique! I hope you enjoy it, too.
Edit: I also found it on DramaFever where it is only split into 2 episodes. Go for that one.
Zoom (2015)
Unique, but highly disappointing
The main idea is great: a story telling a story which is telling the first story. But the stories are crap when you look at them one at a time; one is about sex and boobs, the second about sex and a penis, and the third has the least sex, but the most convoluted plot (which actually makes sense in context).
The acting, cinematography, and the art style of the drawn sections were good, but not enough to overcome the fact it feels like a porno trying to disguise itself as art. I kept watching hoping for improvement; I should have watched something else entirely.
I recommend Stranger Than Fiction (2006) or The NeverEnding Story (1984).
Inkheart (2008) and Pixels (2015) are more rewatchable than Zoom.
Ru guo wo niu you ai qing (2016)
Do NOT be deceived by the title. This is a CRIME series.
Overall "When a Snail Falls in Love" is an entertaining show, but this series is only worth watching if you already like intense CRIME dramas. Do not go in thinking it will be 50% crime and 50% romance. It is 90% crime and 10% romance; maybe even less romance than that. The romance wraps the plot in a tidy package, but inside the package is lies, murder, drugs, and human trafficking.
The plot could have changed the female lead to a younger male and the story could have been 99% the same. And been about 10 minutes shorter.
The fight scenes are OK, nothing amazing. The fake blood is shoddy in some scenes; I've had enough nose bleeds to know what hands covered in blood looks like.
There is very little character backstory or growth. The male lead is awesome at everything he does and the female lead is the one who has to do all the improving (physically). The villains are intensely flat.
The cinematography is probably the best thing about this series; some shots are beautifully done.
I know it sounds like mostly negative things, but I don't want to give the plot away by saying the things I enjoyed. Just know that I binge watched while sick even though I could have watched many other things instead.
Weiwei yixiao hen qingcheng (2016)
Sweet gaming love story
I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet love story. It was interesting to see a show where the drama encircled the main couple, but they behaved with dignity and it never created conflict between them. The pair had flaws, but they were subtle;it was almost annoying how perfect they were, but it's a nice display of a loving relationship. Some people just click and treat each other well (patient, considerate, no secrets, et cetera). The gaming side was a nice story choice. Very fun visually and created an interesting plot many times over. My favorite character was Er Xi; she was fun to watch because she was mostly cheerful and fun, but actually seemed the most realistically human.
Ddo Oh Hae Yeong (2016)
K-Drama fan EAGER to see more
First, I've only seen 2 episodes, but I'm hooked. The premise is original: thinking you ruined your ex- lover's wedding, but actually ruining a complete stranger's who happens to have the same name as her. I'm curious about what happened in the past and what will unfold in their future. There is a surprising amount of interesting characters in the two main characters' lives; I'm expecting more character growth than just the main two.
Second, there is just a dash of fantasy with the precognition aspect to make it interesting. I love the character, Lee Jin-sang's response to his friend's new talent (played by Kim Ji- seok, who I'm relieved not to despise this show, because I know he's a good actor who usually plays despicable characters).
Third, it's fascinating to see range of responses to the cancelled wedding and how Oh Hae Young (Seo Hyun Jin) responds to different people.
Edit: I've now seen all the episodes. It stayed strong throughout; it kept a dash of humor in each episode, too. Definitely one of my favorite K dramas.
