Political thriller evoking an ultra right wing party, very rare at this period, it is a rather effective thriller showing once more Bernard Pierre Donnadieu as a villain, two years after RUE BARBARE, but here he is vs Richard Berry instead of Bernard Giraudeau. I will prefer this one because of the supporting cast, but the awful early eighties atmosphere still, as in RUE BARBARE, from the same Gilles Behat director, brings a touch that I have never been used to. I hate this period; I prefered the seventies. The music score, way of story telling and camera work, acting, neo punk soul and spirit, have always annoyed me so much...But it is bearable, never boring. But it is unfortunately very predictable, in the Hollywood manner. I watched it forty years ago and that's the first time I see it again.
This is a purely awesome film, the best of Laurent Cantet, the movie that reavealed him, and the best role ever from Aurélien Recoing. This is inspired from actual events,a nd this very same story was remade one year later with Daniel Auteuil: L'ADVERSAIRE. Both are terrific but not sjown in the same manner. The 2002 film from Nicole Garcia was more criminal oriented. Here, you are glued, stuck to this riveting tale. You always wonder what will happen in the next scene. An outstanding drama, involving normal folks to whom happens something really terrible. Top of the top. One of the best dramas ever. Serge Livrozet, this non professional actor, gives here a jaw dropping short but unique performance. The amazing story of a man more and more prisoner of his own lies.
Yes, this is another THE MUMMY sequel, provided by the largest studio in Hollywood in the forties, dedicated to this kinnd of material; I mean Universal company. Only some Warner Bros productions directed by Michael Curtiz could match this one. This is cheap, but fast paced and also offering exceptional settings and atmosphere. Lon Chaney Jr was not his father Sr, but quite still good for such stuff. He was not Bela Lugosi nor Boris Karloff, but good enough for my taste, and not only mine, I am sure. So, yes, this is an enjoyable horror yarn that I highy recommend. I did not pay attention to the directing, Leslie Goodwins had no special trademark anyway.
