The R.M. (2003)
A really good LDS film
Part of this movie's charm is the fact that it goes over the top making fun of stereotypical Mormon culture.
Besides the fact that it is a clean movie, (which all clean movies should be supported if we want Hollywood to make movies other than rated R), it is funny, and sweet.
It also portrays how things can change in the span of 2 years, and while a bit dramatic at times, illustrates some of the problems returned missionaries go through when they come home.
Kirby's friend does turn back around at the very end, which shows that no matter how bad people can get, there is always hope.
I think Kirby does a great job in this movie, as with all movies he is in. I think the funniest line in the movie is when he says "Kirby?! What kind of name is that? It sounds like a vacuum cleaner!!!" If you want some good clean fun, see this movie. Sure, it's low budget, with low budget effects. But that is all part of it's charm!
Somewhere, Tomorrow (1983)
What a neat movie!
I found this movie at Walmart for 88 cents - it was marked $1. I bought it because I really enjoy Sarah Jessica Parker's earlier stuff (not so much her later stuff, though), and I thought I would give it a try. At the very least, I was out less than a dollar.
I just finished watching it, and I must say, it is really interesting, and it has a great moral. You should always live life as if you knew you were going to die - and what would you do to make your life better. It's not about money, power, wealth, or any of those things that Hollywood would like you to believe, but it is about caring, second chances, and real love, and is about what life is really about.
Sure, it's low budget, and it is from the early 80's, but if you can get past that, it has a great message, and some of the acting is pretty good, too!
It's just too bad that Tom Shea was only in this movie, and in only one other movie - a pretty bad one at that. He was good in this one, and kinda cute, too.
All in all, I would rate it at a 7, simply for the message it contains. If you can manage to get your hands on a copy, I highly recommend it.
Sky King (1951)
My mom flipped when I found this for her!
My mother told me about this show, and she told me she would watch it religiously every Saturday morning. She was starting to think she dreamed it up, because no one she talked to remembered it. So I did a search, and found some episodes on tape, and gave it to her birthday. She watched two of them that very day, and loved them!
With Kirby Grant as the Sky King, and Gloria Winters Penny, and all the rest, from what I saw, it is a great show! Yes, it is simple, as most shows from the early fifties, but it taught right from wrong, and that's what is missing from most shows today. It might be interesting to see what a remake of this show would look like.
