Nimona (2023)
So good, a must watch
This movie is a blast from start to finish, with such a great blend of the magic of fairy tales with modern action, technology, humour and a brilliant non stop ride, with genuine emotions. I absolutely loved the Nimona character, and was really feeling for her when her full backstory is revealed. There is violence, so this film isn't for the little ones, but it is more slapstick and not nearly as scary as Puss in Boots, The Last Wish. As a 2D styled look it just bounces off the TV screen, and is such a shame it didn't get a movie cinema showing, I'd still go and see it if they did put it on. It is well worth a look,
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
Such a fun and fresh film
This film is so impressive, from the style and look, the voice acting and the story.
The story seems basic, but it is so well constructed and all the characters are consistent in both their motivations and actions. The big bad wolf is truely a great villain, and Antonio B's Puss is so impressive combined with what the character design, animation and rendering brought to it.
The rendering, or look, of the film is now the "new" style, thanks to becoming prominent in films like "Spider-man Into the Spiderverse" and the upcoming "Teenage Mutant Nnja Turntles: Turtle Mayhen". A nice change to the old Pixar/Disney 3D look.
Hope to see more like this soon.
Klaus (2019)
An must-see movie
This is an excellent family movie, full of great characters, great animation - it's 2D which makes it a nice change.
It is a Santa origin story, updated for modern audiences, and has some really heartfelt and emotional moments that will bring a tear to your eye.
The voice acting is solid, and while the story takes a little time to get going and get the Christmas plot, it is a very nicely paced film with a main character who has some serious life lessons to learn.
There is humour and zany antics, great world and character design, and nothing feels false or just added, but all the beats and reveals are planted in advance, so that they feel true.
The ending was really sweet, sad, and beautiful.
Mia and Me: The Hero of Centopia (2022)
A fun film
I liked this movie and so did my six year old niece who I took to see it. It is bright colourful and has a great message about the value of friendship and how it can be used to do good in the world. Some reviewers have commented that it has too much violence and fighting and was scary for their kids, and while all kids are different I found the violence amount and level of scariness comparable to the "Smurfs". Yes there are fight scenes, but no-one seriously gets hurt on screen, Elves and unicorns are hit with bright colourful smoke bombs that turn them into some kind of mutants, but in the end everyone is turned back to the normal self - so everyone is saved. While the quality of animation doesn't match Disney or Pixar, the look is still cool, the music is great, and the voices are suitable for the characters. If you have a rainy day with little to do and like unicorns, give this film a watch.
