The Menu (2022)
Borderline Disconnected, but Thought-Provoking and Original Horror
This movie makes claims on multiple sociopolitical issues. I thought this was done decently overall, but could have been connected more clearly for a more meaningful storyline.
The big theme is social class divide between the rich and poor. There are subsets to this, mainly the role of memory in forming passion, the hierarchy of women and men in a patriarchal system, art vs artist perception, and the line between passion from enjoyment versus passion for achievement.
These themes are introduced a bit too sporadically, with little time spent to connect them throughout the movie. Still, it was good food for thought (no pun intended) and contributes to the unpredictability and satire of the film.
I know this is marketed as a horror-comedy, but I personally found some of the comedy unnecessary and unappealing. It detracted from the message of the film and made me confused as to what I was supposed to feel, especially during the ending.
Acting 7.5/10
Very good, some experienced actors here. Believable despite the satire. Some powerfully delivered, uniquely thought-provoking lines from Ralph Fiennes's character.
Plot 7/10
Very original in the menu/food concepts. Never seen food described and symbolized in the way it is here. Props for that.
Unrealistic, but not in a nonsensical way that draws you away from the film.
Intriguing, unpredictable, keeps you eager to watch. Not a scary or gory horror at all, though.
Second half felt weaker than the first, especially because the comedy is concentrated here, which made it feel sudden.
Production 8/10
High quality. Some beautiful, crisp, yet appropriately eerie shots. Atmospherical and draws you in. Great sets that set the vibe appropriately.
Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
Whimsical, Likable Fun with a Good Historical Message
This movie is not spectacular, but is good at balancing many things at once. It kept me entertained, made me smile, informed me, and is overall a cute movie. A good blend.
- A high-stakes case with well-placed, light humor
- Sprinklings of romance that are cute but don't detract from the plot
Plot: Based on the real history of the match girls, a bit of historical knowledge is always welcome, and here, it makes all the difference in creating a memorable storyline.
Story picks up after about 45 minutes and becomes more interesting and fast-paced. Easy to follow logic.
Wish they dived more into Enola's mother's work, as they left this "loose end" ( ;) ) open after the first movie.
Characters: Likeable, but nothing too extraordinary. Enola is especially charming and brings heart and uniqueness to the movie.
Acting: Well done, but again, nothing too extraordinary given the type of movie it is.
Aesthetic: Beautiful and charming costumes, sets, and little animations throughout.
