Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)
I'm _profoundly_ surprised by the number of negative reviews...
I can't but reiterate that this is simply one of the most magical experiences I've ever had watching a movie. The idea that this film is filled with clichés is reviewers being familiar with the tropes but not being able to, or not trying to understand the film on anything but a completely superficial level. CP is homage to the power of movies and a lyrical riff on formula. The story has elements of magical realism that inform the narrative with an almost surreal quality at points. Man, I love this film. The denouement at the end never fails to bring me to tears. I have seen thousands upon thousands of films, and believe me this is as good as it gets... Though not as playful, or clever as Ameile Poulain it is cut from the same cloth. It's seems important to note in lieu of some of the other comments that I have not seen the director's cut.
Chef! (1993)
Black Adder - WHAT!?!
Comparing this great comedy to Fawlty Towers is ridiculous. Both shows are brilliant, but that's about where the similarity ends (aside from the fact that they are both about an ass with a demanding wife)... One is told in a hyper exaggerated style (Fawlty Towers) and one is more of a slice of life, albeit a cranky and bumblingly interesting one (Chef!).
When I first saw Chef!. I though it would be another dry or pedantic Brit-com but i was pleasantly suprised to be greeted with a genuinely funny and touching program. Highly Recommended, particularly if you like food :)
And comparing it to Black Adder? That's like comparing Four weddings and a Funeral to Star Wars!
