I am a hardcore superman fan. I am writing this review on my phone which has a Superman phone case. I am wearing Superman socks. And I have never been as disappointed in a movie since I watched Star Wars the Phantom Menace. This was an awful almost mockery instalment of my favourite franchise.
2 out of 10 stars.
I would give it 0 if it weren't for Russell Crowe and Henry Cavill.
Russell is a solid Jor El, standing up for the good of the Kryptonions, sacrificing himself for his son, showing him the right way etc. etc. I was always happy he was cast in this role.
Henry Cavill- all muscles and shirtlessness- yes, that got my interest and kept me watching. Oh, eh hem, yes, his performance was fine, it didn't quite encapsulate the wholesome good hearted nature of the man of steel. The only hint was him in the bar when he stood up for that waitress, but he decided to moodily leave and wreck his truck instead.
I also wasn't happy that they had made him so moody and dark, that's not what Clark Kent is, he's full of joy, his desire to make the world a better and happier place stems from his joyful and warm hearted nature, not 'oh no, it's my destiny, I have no choice, I have to grudgingly come forward and save the world even though I'd rather stay on a god damn fisherman's boat'.
My main hesitation for watching this film was they had cast Amy Adams as Lois Lane. I already dislike Amy Adams. She is very bland and incredibly overrated, but keeps getting cast. She can only play one character: the pathetic woman, which Lois Lane is NOT. I describe Lois Lane as Buffy without the supernatural elements. The woman who lead the suffragette's. She takes no crap from anyone and stands up for herself. And she has a great sense of humor and a love for food. All these elements were missing. She is a sassy woman. Margot Kidder GOT that, she nailed it. If you read the first issue of the Superman comic it's there, it was NOT what Amy Adams decided to do. There was no sass, Lois is sassy, that's why Clark loves her, and that's why the world understands that he loves her and would give up his powers to be with her, because she's interesting- not a plank of bloody wood. What the hell did he see in her, seriously??
And then Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent. No, just no. I can't put too much blame on Kevin, but he still accepted a hack's retelling of what Jonathan Kent should be. Jonathan showed Clark the difference between right and wrong, taught him to control his powers and conceal them- NOT suppress them completely.
After the bus crash and young Clark says to him 'what was I supposed to do? let them die?' and Jonathan said 'maybe'. That's not only absolutely not what Jonathan Kent would ever say to anyone ever, but also terrible parenting. If you have the choice to save a bus full of school children, do it. One person's secret identity is not worth 20 young innocent lives. I wanted to spit on him. And when the tornado came and Clark was ready to rescue him but he's like, no, I'll die instead of be easily saved by you, I was like 'good riddance' he was better off without him. And wanting him to just work on the farm instead of go out and help the freaking world, all Jonathan did was suppress him, making him lead a miserable life, on the run, no friends, crappy jobs- like what the hell? Is this what you want for your kid?
And how much destruction can one city take? It was like judgement day by the end.
And my last rant, Superman does NOT KILL, but hey, let's just ignore that rule and snap Zod's neck. If you had the strength to do that wouldn't you have had the strength to knock his ass to the ground?? SUPERMAN DOES NOT KILL- that is why he's super. Superawesome, supercool- A SUPER-MAN. And he should have had the red underwear, don't change the franchise to suit your stupid idea's, just make another movie about an alien with super human powers. Just no, this movie was all wrong and I will never get the dollar back that I wasted renting this. I am disgusted. I have to go watch Christopher Reeve in Superman I to restore my faith in this franchise.
