Leave the World Behind (2023)
Promising but doesn't deliver.
It's too bad, I was really looking forward to this one. The plot was good, the writing was mediocre, the acting was meh, and the story went nowhere.
They really tried too hard to build the suspense but it ended up not being suspenseful at all... Almost like they were trying to fill a void in the script with suspenseful music but it didn't really add to it in any way.
Once again, another Netflix swing and a miss. They should probably just stop making movies at this point and lower their prices. Honestly, apart from the odd Adam Sandler flick Netflix just continues to punch out garbage after garbage saturating the market with crap.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Horrible Scoring
The movie itself is okay, I wouldn't put it up there as one of the better war movies I've seen. I think 1917 did a better job at depicting the uneasiness of war.
The major issues and why I knocked a point and a half off this movie is the scoring, it's terrible. Scoring can really make or break a movie and the timing of the drums and horns just seems so obnoxious and not really fit for the theme of the movie. I've never heard such a poorly placed snare drum.
In sum, just another mediocre Netflix movie that they paid to hype up pre-release. Have yet to be wowed by a Netflix movie and at this point I do t think I ever will be.
The Devil You Know (2022)
The acting and dialogue keep you in it.
The storyline isn't much of a mystery, and yeah the old "guy gets out of jail and tries to do good" archetype is played out. But this movie draws out emotion and feeling, partially because the acting is pretty decent for a B movie and partially because the writing isn't half bad either. It's a solid 6 and worth a watch.
