Bear Creek (2017)
Fun if low budget effort - I enjoyed it
Was able to stream this the other night. For a low budget effort, I enjoyed it for the most part. It was kind of fun, kind of campy, kind of odd and featured gay characters.
The sound was awful during the first part of the movie. For some reason, one particular actors voice was almost inaudible. Although this was mildly irritating, I can lip read so it is all good.
If you don't mind low budget movies and like them like I do, I'd recommend giving it a go (unless you have a problem with homosexual men....then you probably shouldn't watch.)
Scarred (2016)
Not bad, but not terribly great either
I'll start by saying that overall, I enjoyed this movie. It had, for a slasher, a decent plot and the cast did pretty well. Everything was pretty well done, especially for an independent film working on an independent film budget.
That being said... is the only "modeling" that the writer and/or director familiar with from Maxim or Playboy? The "modeling" being done was pretty adolescent male fantasy and really nothing like actual modeling. I don't know why, but this just really irritated me for some reason.
Overall, I'd say it was worth a look if you have the opportunity and are a fan of independent film and horror.
Socket (2007)
Far from perfect, but a lot of fun!
Wow - some reviews have been rather harsh, don't you think? Here are my thoughts on this movie without giving too much away. It had an interesting premise that I haven't seen before. It moved along at a nice clip and never left me bored. The actors were handsome and it had enough nudity to be "fun" without being tacky. It was an enjoyable way to spend part of an evening and it is a movie I would watch again.
Yes - there are times in the movie where the smallish budget is evident - but it didn't really take me out of the movie. Yes - some of the actors might have been a little stiff, but once again; didn't take me out of the flick.
So often, people complain about the "gay stereotypes" in these movies. Guess what folks. "Stereotypical" gay people exist. Just because they aren't as "straight acting," "hipster," or "edgy" as you are does not make them less relevant.
Kudos to the director, staff and everyone else involved for making something interesting and fun.
3-Day Weekend (2008)
Hmmm - A lot of different opinions
I generally liked this movie. A friend I was watching it with said that he did not, and that it was just full of cliché's. Well - he was right; but sometimes, cliché's are comfortable. With low budget indipendant gay films, I don't go in expecting much other than some nudity and cute guys. This movie delivered that, but also a nice story without the usual happy ending.
Sure - there were some scenes where the dialog was a bit stilted; but I kind of found that charming as well. I found this a nice way to spend an hour and a half during the evening, curled up on the couch in my pajamas.
Psych:9 (2010)
Ugh.
Okay - to start: Carey Elwes is the man. I absolutely love him and he is the reason I watched this.
This movie? Where to begin? The sets were good and the effects were good as well. The plot? I wasn't sure what was actually supposed to be going on through a lot of it. It was part mystery, part slasher, part psychological horror, part ghost story, part... get my drift? There was a whole lot going on here and it got pretty confusing.
Also - what is up with the absolutely detestable characters in films like this? Was I supposed to like either of the lead couple? She was a shrieking harpy and I was frankly hoping someone would just put her out of her misery. The husband? Well, he was kind of a butt as well. I really didn't care for either of them - therefore I could have cared less if they were brutally slain. Kind of bad when these are the lead characters in a film.
I wanted to like this film, I really did. Promise.
But I didn't.
Strapped (2010)
Great little film
Saw this last night from Netflix. I'll be honest, I rented it because of male nudity (I'm not proud.) I am happy to say, that although the nudity was at a minimum really (especially for a film about a gay hustler) the film itself was just delightful. It was definitely a journey in self discovery and I enjoyed it from start to finish.
One little think kind of hit me the wrong way... Everyone in the film kept talking about the lead as being "So beautiful." I'll agree that he is handsome, but the longer haired gentleman in the final scene with him would qualify as "beautiful" for me. I know, I know...beauty is subjective, but that is the only not "glowing" thought I had after the film was over.
I would highly recommend this to, well, anyone.

Well - It is exactly what it sets out to be
I really enjoy the cheese factor of SyFy original films. They are the kind that friends and I get together and watch and make fun of. We occasionally have "live chats" on the internet while watching them so friends from all over the country can connect and laugh together.
That being said - and taken in that context - this movie was absolutely fun! Yes - there is a low budget. Yes - the the plot, script, sets, and special effects were a little lacking; but it is a SyFy original movie and should be taken in that context. It was a cheesy alien romp that left me smiling. Certainly not a great movie, but I was definitely entertained.
Kyûketsu Shôjo tai Shôjo Furanken (2009)
I laughed until tears were running down my face
It appears that some people don't like or don't get this genre. This movie was SO over the top and SO wildly improbable and inappropriate that I just relished every-single-second of it. It sparked a new interest in the over the top Asian gore-comedy for me. This one almost reminded me of a mash-up of Kill Bill with the Power Rangers.
If you are looking for serious and gory Asian Horror, stick with Takashi Miike and the likes. This move (and others like it that I have since watched) is pure camp and fun. The lead character is just cute as a button, and her actions throughout the film are nicely juxtaposed with her looks. Sweet girl...blood swords... I'm actually planning on buying this for my collection.
Undead (2003)
Superbly Entertaining
I wasn't expecting much from this movie and was pleasantly blown away. The non-heroic "hero" was awesome. The movie would be moving right along at a nice clip, then throw something so out of character and hilarious at me that I would be taken aback and laughing, waiting for the next off the wall break in the action. I'd highly recommend this movie to any of my friends. The casting of the actors was brilliant and it kept up a really good pace throughout. While writing this review, I am thinking that I'm going to watch this movie again this coming weekend! It is definitely one of those films that I'll queue up when friends are over so we can all laugh together.
Fear No Evil (1981)
Pretty Good Effort - Amazing given the budget
Caught this the other afternoon and really enjoyed it. A tad bit slow in some spots, but the "slow" parts really were developing the story. It had a good creepy atmosphere, some totally weird stuff happening, some gore, some nudity (male and female) and a plot. The ending was a "special effects extravaganza" straight from the 80's, but I enjoyed that as well. I certainly couldn't see anything like this being made today, so I'm grateful that it was made at all.
If you get the chance, I'd recommend renting it or watching it on cable. It's cheesy, but it's also creepy and tells a good story. The actors range from passable to good, and they get the story across. It really had everything I could ask for from an 80's horror flick.
Chainsaw Sally (2004)
Heck of a good time!
OK - I know it is not a great movie (not really even a good one) but I have to admit that I LOVED this flick! There is something charming about a mild mannered librarian with an almost super-hero, goth, chainsaw wielding alter ego with a transvestite little brother. My friends and I laughed throughout the entire thing - and kept making comments like, "...if she were our local librarian - we'd totally hang out!" I also really enjoyed the music. We were all ready to absolutely hate (love/hate relationship) this movie, but by the end - we all had to admit that we liked it. I think I'm planning on a purchase so I can see it again!
Schizophreniac: The Whore Mangler (1997)
Wow...that's all I can say...wow
There are bad movies, then there are the movies that are SO bad, that they become almost art. This is one of those films. My partner and I are still both kind of shell shocked, you know, staring off into space and drooling! You can tell that the people involved (I hope they changed their names to protect themselves) were having a blast, and they definitely weren't shy. I give this one a three out of ten just because of the gratuitous smut and REALLY bad gore effects. I laughed out loud during most of the movie, so I guess you could say that it showed me a good time. Beware viewer, the above words in no way construe that this is a good film, because it is not. All I can say in my defense, is that it was impossible to pass up a movie with such a GREAT title!
