The Light Between Oceans (2016)
A heartbreaking story
I can't believe it took me over a year before I finally got to see this movie. Tom (Michael Fassbender) and Isabel (Alicia Vikanda) were outstanding in their performances and the scenery was breathtaking.
Tom was offered a temporary post for 6 months as lighthouse keeper after returning from the war whilst the occupant of the position was recuperating. Upon the death of the occupant, Tom was offered a 3 year contract which he took. Being a lighthouse keeper was very isolating.
On a return trip back to the mainland, Tom was invited for a meal where he met Isabel. The following day Isabel and Tom went for a picnic and she asked Tom if she could write to him when he returned to the lighthouse. Letters went backwards and forwards and finally Tom asked Isabel to marry him. They were both very happy at the lighthouse but, sadly, Isabel suffered two miscarriages.
One night whilst at his post in the lighthouse, Tom saw a boat out at sea and both he and Isabel went to investigate. They found a dead man and a baby. Tom wanted to report the finding, as was his obligation, but Isabel, having lost two children, wanted to keep the baby, and this is where things get rather messy. Without going any further into detail, it was a heart breaking story but one well worth seeing.
Me Before You (2016)
Heartwarming and thought provoking
I saw this movie today and was not disappointed. The acting, especially from Emilia Clarke, who played Lou, was brilliant. I also thought Sam Claflin, who played Will Traynor, did a very good job. I note that someone has commented that it wasn't as good as the book. I disagree. There were a couple of small parts that were left out but they certainly did not detract from the movie. It has been a long time since I have seen a movie that I have loved as much as this one and would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a laugh, but also be prepared to have a cry as well. I also noted that, from an ethical point of view, someone gave it a one star rating. I find that very unfair because the movie was excellent. That is the person's view because of their religion.
Red Dog (2011)
Red Dog
My husband and I had the pleasure of seeing this movie yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was a beautiful movie and had some very funny moments and some sad moments.
Whilst this film is based on a true story, some poetic license seems to have been given to it.
My husband hasn't laughed so much for a long, long time.
The acting perhaps wasn't the greatest, but I still believe most people would enjoy this film and it is well worth seeing.
It was nice to see a movie without violence and very little swearing for a change.
Beneath Hill 60 (2010)
An excellent Australian-made war movie
My husband and I saw this movie yesterday and I have to say the acting was brilliant.
This is a very good war movie, showing comradeship, caring for your fellow man, and depicts what a serviceman in war would go through. So it was very hard to understand why civilians were involved, and young ones at that.
It was very graphic, to the point where I felt a need to look away at times. Australia has done us proud. It is definitely not a pretty movie and quite dark, but then again war isn't pretty. I would say definitely go and see it.
Invictus (2009)
Another winner for Clint Eastwood
Is there anything Clint Eastwood can't turn his hand to?
My husband and I saw this movie yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Both Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon were excellent in the film. Matt Damon's accent was totally believable. I personally felt as though, throughout the movie, I was there at the time these things were happening and felt the highs and the lows.
Whilst this movie won't go down as the greatest movie ever, do yourself a favour and go and see it. Morgan Freeman should get an award for his role, and I would even go so far as to say so should Matt Damon. They both did justice to this film.
Mao's Last Dancer (2009)
A beautifully told movie
My husband and I went to see this movie yesterday and thought the acting was great from relatively unknown, at least to us, actors. I had some idea of what the movie was about prior to going to see it but it was even better than my expectations, and the lead actor was a truly magnificent dancer, as were the others.
The story was moving with a few humorous moments, and showed how disciplined a person must be in order to become a great dancer. I have to say it has been my experience that people generally leave before the credits but, like myself, they stayed, which says something for the acting and the movie itself.
I would recommend this movie to everyone, even those who are not fans of ballet.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
Eye Opener
I went to see this movie yesterday and was engrossed from start to finish. The acting was excellent by everyone. It had its humorous moments but mostly a very sad story. Of course, we have to realise it was that, and only that - a story - although it has left me wondering whether something like this could have happened.
The movie shows the worst of mankind and the best of mankind. I would say to all of you who are thinking "Is it worth going to see?" definitely go and see it. It will leave you thinking long after you leave the theatre. I have to say this is probably one of the only times I have left a theatre at the end where there is dead silence.
There Will Be Blood (2007)
By far the worst movie I have ever seen
After reading some of the reviews of this movie, my husband and I went along to see it yesterday. Whilst the acting may, and I stress may, have been good, the story was appalling. I found myself willing it to come to an end. If this movie was intended to keep the viewer interested, it failed dismally. In fact I think it was complete nonsense. It seems to me this movie is all about the greed of one very very nasty man who utilises a child to gain access to property where oil can be found and that is the only story line; nothing more, nothing less. All in all a most disappointing movie. Perhaps I have missed the plot but I cannot understand the high rating for this movie.
