Chaos Walking (2021)
A Sci Fi depicting the human race
Few hours after I watched it I realized this is maybe the right way of materializing the words of Edgar Allan Poe: ,,I have no faith in human
perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago."
No matter how far we'll get in the Universe, there will be always be weak people, power hungry people and religious dementia. And this movie shows it all. Good story, good acting. I like it.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Oh, come on!
I love good acting. John Krasinski and Emily Blunt do a wonderful job here. Even the kids were great. What I don't love - are these stories where monsters appear out of thin air, they have no origins, no place to start, and the army, police&special forces with their intel&surveillance&heavy weaponry are completely nonexistent, leaving the hopeless civilians to defend themselves with axes and shotguns. Ok, the audio device was a nice touch, still...
The cherry on top is "day 462, she's pregnant". I want to know at what point they decided "yeah, our species is being decimated by extremely sensitive hearing monsters, so let's make a baby and hope s/he and the mother doesn't scream ever". I mean, what the hell? What normal human being wants to bring a child into a horror arena like this one? People who never wrote a script or anything for a movie in their life can come with something better, that actually makes sense. Anyone can. Really now. These actors deserve much better movies with better stories. Their appearance saved this poor writing.
Vikings: The Best Laid Plans (2020)
Unrealistic
Please tell me how is possible that a cripple who hardly drags himself up a cliff, crosses the space between that cliff and the sea shore UNHARMED, so that he reaches Bjorn to kill him with a swift and precise strike? It has no logic. This episode makes me think the producers were in a hurry to close the story/series and did the same thing GoT guys did in the 8th season.
Jack Ryan (2018)
Kept me interested. I want more.
After years and years of watching movies, series, miniseries and remakes I got to the point where I appreciate a few things like: (the) acting, script, dialogues, action, special effects, the presence or the absence of stereotypes, angles of the shooting cameras, chosen places for filming, and of course... the actors.
So... the season 1 crew of Jack Ryan series do their jobs very well. Speaking of John Krasinski - he's acting naturally, fits very well the Jack Ryan character. He's young, having emotional scars, strong in doing his job yet vulnerable to the woman he loves.
Also, I was surprised in a good way that I haven't found the usual american stupid dialogues and replies, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The action kept me "glued" and (again) I was surprised in a good way to see that some things couldn't be predicted easily.
Stargate Origins (2018)
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios did this? Really? You can't be serious.
After all these years of fine stories, ideas&thrills of Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and Universe, one should expect from Stargate Origins some essence, power, inspiration...
Has any of you watched something so bad, that you got embarrassed? If you did, you know the feeling. If you didn't... well, prepare yourself for a nasty fall, considering you have some expectations.
The actors are shallow and badly chosen, but the bad acting is not the only issue here. The out-of common sense, bad sci-fi script drove me nuts (the Stargate gets a stable wormhole with... a car battery??). I consider the lack of masculinity in a heterosexual character to be extremely annoying (see the young captain who acts like a virgin). You would expect some extremely groomed german soldiers with much better uniforms under the command of Dr. Wilhelm Brücke, or some nice Goa'uld outfits. Not the case.
This is what I call a total failure, an affront to the Stargate idea.
Unbelievable...
The Comedian (2016)
You know what they say about wine? That is getting better with age.
In doing The Comedian Mr. Robert De Niro proves once more that he's a great actor. And what's a great actor to me? Someone who can play in different movie genres - action, drama, love, comedy and so on... While I must underline that good action movies require good acting, I must say it's easier for people to look aggravated or dangerous, compared to smile, be true, and make other people smile with them. And this is one of the reasons Mr. De Niro is a good actor. He can be serious till a degree of being scary, and he can also be amusing - so good at it that he can make you laugh in tears. I enjoy dirty jokes, as long they are made well. That's why I love this movie. One thing Robert De Niro does in a great way here - is to play the role of an asshole. And he's doing that in The Comedian so well, that you start to like the character after no more than 10 minutes (of course, you need a dirty sense of humor for that). Put in this Jackie Burke role anyone you want, any actor, no matter how good he is, you'll never get a better movie. I had a good evening watching this. Very good. 8 out of 10 from me. Enjoy
