Black Summer (2019)
Safety in numbers...except with this group.
I gave up on The Walking Dead 3 seasons ago but watching Black Summer reminds me of how much worse zombie television can be; and that's saying something. None of the characters are likeable, none of the characters are realistic, and they all seem to have been handed the short end of the stick on the IQ spectrum.
If you're looking for quality zombie television - or just plain good television - watch Kingdom instead.
Kingdom (2019)
Perfection
I don't hand out 10s lightly (the last one was 4 years ago for The Expanse); after a second watch - yes, it is that good - I am confident to say that this is as good as it gets. Every other Netflix show take note, this is the show to beat and the task will be impossible considering the average quality of Netflix shows.
Everything is absolutely stunning, from the acting to the wardrobe to the atmosphere; wow. I don't think it's possible to overstate how fantastic this first season is.
Watch this if you love good television.
Don't watch this if you can't read subtitles and think good television is "reality" TV or cringey shows (eg. The Flash).
Polar (2019)
"Polar" has no idea what it wants to be
Let's face it, we're all here because of Mads Mikkelsen; my score reflects the fact that Mads is the main redeeming feature of this film.
I wanted to like this film, I really did. Most are claiming it contains action scenes better than John Wick with a similar storyline while featuring Mads!? Sign me up! Those dreams were quickly crushed with the opening scene and each subsequent scene was just beating a dead horse. Don't get me wrong, the action sequences are better than most, but it definitely does not reside in the same vicinity as John Wick or Daredevil.
While Polar's action scenes definitely increased its overall score, its characters , atmosphere, and plot - more more specifically, the lack of - destroyed any hope of redemption. The characters ranges from serious professionalism to absurd caricatures which leaves you flabbergasted and wonder how these...things can be considered the best assassins. The atmosphere switches from serious in one to ridiculously corny in the next (all thanks to the terrible character choices made by the director). Make up your mind Jonas, choose whether you want John Wick seriousness or Adam West Batman's cartoony style, but not both!
All-in-all, watchable, but barely just.
Castlevania (2017)
Overall, average
When I watched Season 1 the previous year, it had left me intrigued and somewhat hopeful. Alas, Season 2 has showed what Castlevania truly is - clichéd characters and decent animation all mixed with an abundance of blood to appear "adult" (per Americans) which leaves us with a taste of mediocrity.
Game Over, Man! (2018)
This lowbrow comedy is not for everyone
I'm going to keep this short and simple, if you aren't a fan of lowbrow, vulgar, and idiotic humour, this isn't for you. If you are, then you'll greatly enjoy it.
Iron Fist (2017)
Marvel & Netflix used to mean quality
There's no way around it, Iron Fist is a disaster. How could a studio that produced such stellar television in Daredevil and Jessica Jones produce this monstrosity? It makes me almost want to continue watching F̶e̶l̶i̶c̶i̶t̶y̶ a̶n̶d̶ F̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶s̶, I mean, Arrow again...almost.
If you're thinking about watching Iron Fist in preparation for The Defenders, I would strongly recommend you skip Iron Fist and re-watch Daredevil instead.
Wonder Woman (2017)
The BEST DC movie yet!
DC has finally done what fans were hoping for throughout its choppy film history: to produce a quality superhero film that can rival the juggernaut that is Marvel Studios. Wonder Woman has achieved this by following the same formula that Marvel Studios has used in nearly every single one of its movies - it may be old and we may bemoan watching yet another superhero movie with the same formula, but lets face it...it works. And works it does in Wonder Woman, providing nothing new and exciting, but resulting in an entertaining M̶a̶r̶v̶e̶l̶ DC film nonetheless.
