Self Reliance (2023)
Great cast but a wasted effort
This movie begins with a premise that seems fun. The cameo of Andy Samberg was exciting and meta, I thought this was a promising start. Unfortunately, the following 20 min that I watched was so poorly acted and poorly written that I had to turn it off. It felt like a soulless piece. I hope he didn't have too much passion behind this project because I saw none. Anna Kendrick is twitchy, with a very fast delivery of lines, her movements look stale, and her dead pan delivery was disappointing. I thought she had more range. Also, nothing against her, but she has aged noticably yet has kept a same style that also looks stale. Brighten up Anna, you are a beautiful woman, why are you so stiff in this performance? Don't you have confidence? My runtime was 18 min and I bowed out. The only laugh I got was from Andy.
The Dry (2020)
The payoff never really paid off
I thought that a lot of this movie was pretty dang impressive. Great cinematography, great atmosphere, intriguing storyline. Eric Bana was mature and grounded in this role and he was an enjoyable protagonist to watch. My biggest gripe with this movie was the use of flashbacks. It was distracting and poorly executed. I almost wish the movie was split between 2 acts. The story from the past that sets up the present was a sad one that I wish was better explored. I especially enjoyed the actresses of the two/three female leads. The end of the movie though felft... disappointing. I felt no release. The tone that was set for the entire movie simply continues into infinity and while that may be poetic for some stories, I had hoped for closure.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016)
No season three is tragic
Such a fantastic show and it's a huge let down there is not a season three. I am going keep my fingers crossed that changes soon
Cursed (2020)
Get past the first episode!!
This show keeps getting better and better. I have a few criticism of some of the decisions the writers made but over all, it has been a pleasure to watch this show. The acting is great, the costume and set design is actually stellar, and the writing is predictable. I dont mean predictable in a negative way. The show does not really try to hide what it is and instead embraces the vision they had for the whole arc of production. I really don't know what happened with the first episode though. Perhaps it was a pilot? The worst performances of the season are displayed here. However it only gets better the more you watch it. By episode three you will be wondering to yourself how much candy is left in the bag. I hated when I got to the end and I am impatiently waiting for season 2. I guess I'll rewatch killing eve again.
