Suspect Zero (2004)

Intriguing and almost too complicated
9 January 2006
Suspect Zero has an intriguing plot that should have been better protected. Because the plot outline in the Cable TV spot gave away the first surprise. So I started watching it knowing already an important premise. Even so, it looks like the plot is too complex and shouldn't have been told in such a "videoclipesque" fashion. Of course there are some facts to realize along the film but it's almost impossible to follow how the FBI agent starts to go on the right track. That's probably because the actor lacked charisma. Even Kingsley was over sometimes. I agree that if one should watch a second time looking for the details it should enjoy better but for me it seems they've not explored the full potential of the theme.

Hotel Rwanda (2004)

Violence is always a matter of choice
3 January 2006
What stroke me the most about Hotel Rwanda was the option made by the writer and director of not using too much scenes of violence as we are used to see in a movie. The situation in itself was already so strong that we didn't need tons of blood splattered all over. They told a very violent history focusing on the human drama, the doubts, hopes, envy and so on. The most dramatic scenes were always happening from a certain distance. That made the film even stronger. It's a nice example of how it is possible to make movies about violent themes with sense and sensibility. I believe this movie should be shown in every second grade schools around the world in order to make us never forget how the West can be cruel with those countries where there is no oil or diamonds or gold...

Talk to Her (2002)

Disappointment of the year
22 November 2002
I've heard a lot from Almodovar's new feature and I went to watch it expecting something at least as good as All About my Mother. Some critics even said this one was better. But I was thoroughly disappointed at the end.

From the very start the story seems weird. The passion of that nurse for the ballet girl was very unlikely. He was more of a fan than an actual lover. The characters were not really interesting and I didn't get envolved with them. Too long dance scenes seemed to fit better in a Carlos Saura movie.

I stick with All about my mother and El Matador as Almodovar's best of the best.

Woman on Top (2000)

Brazil with Spanish accent
3 December 2001
The director showed she had admiration for what she portraits as an easy-going, more open-minded Brazilian way of life but this film, as many others, failed to capture Brazil's real soul. Penelope Cruz is Spanish and her Portuguese was as bad as any other foreigner's, so she was not convincing as a typical woman from Bahia. Watching the movie we get the impression everybody hangs around in Brazil with a guitar playing Bossa Nova or serenade songs. Despite the usual misinformation, this is a funny movie, especially the culinary part.

Who said children is innocent?
3 December 2001
This is an excellent adaptation of the book and the director manages to show how children can learn and exercise the worst of human behavior, the search for power at any cost, even if it is other human lives. I think it might have been real difficult to cope with such a numerous cast of boys and the result is really good.

This is one of the best thrillers I have ever watched.
22 May 2001
Excellent thriller about a Budapest waitress Tereza that falls in love with a policeman (László). She brings him to live with her and her teenager son (Róbert) longing for a happy family life. But instead Tereza and Róbert get into a growing psychological nightmare. She has to accept a weird deal to avoid losing her love. We are introduced into Timár's family drama by a camera that travels around the house as if it were a bat. But who's the bat? Lászlo or us?
