Monster (2003)
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL.
I'm guessing critics have "Lord of the Rings syndrome." This is where a film comes out that is really bad, but no one wants to be the first person to say how bad it is. So, everyone just copies. I love crime-dramas and true crime, but this movie was so bad, I wanted to walk out. And not just once, almost a dozen times. The only real star in this movie is the make-up applied to Charlize Theron. Is she good? Eh. Alright at best. I think she peaked in 2 DAYS IN THE VALLEY. She has mannerisms and voice down, but doesn't remain consistent. Her narrative voice-over appears to be her own voice, separating it from the rest of the film. Not much even seems to happen in this film. For a movie about a serial killer, there is miniscule violence. Maybe the director was just trying to push the gay angle. Who knows. All I know is that's 100+ minutes of my life, I wish I could have back.
Jason X (2001)
what is this god-awful mess?
I love Friday the 13th. The first three are amazing. It seems like after that, the producers tried to suck harder with each subsequent film. The last three films (parts 8,9 and 10) are beyond awful in description. What's amazing is you didnt think they could make a film worse than Jason takes Manhattan, and they did. You watch Jason Goes to Hell and your first thought is "That is such a blatant rip-off of The Hidden, it should be called plagarism." and then you think "Well, they couldn't possibly make a movie worse than part 9." then Jason X comes out. Not only is this one of the worst movies ever made, the crew touted it has the best script ever. I would like to see what script they were reading, because someone must have pulled the switcheroo on them when they started filming. This film is not only horrible on every single possible level, it is pointless and has no redeeming values. This isnt even a film thats so bad, you can laugh and enjoy it. This film is so bad, when you're done you want to physically harm those who wrote, directed, and produced. i haven't seen this much harm done to a franchise since Batman & Robin....and this is actually worse, if you can believe it. At least Batman & Robin was just one film....we Friday the 13th fans have dealt with three atrocities in a row. I have hope for Freddy vs. Jason...and I really don't think you can make a worse film than Jason X, but I'm sure the producers will surprise me with the next Jason-only friday film.
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
possibly the worst movie ever
this is one of the worst movies ever made. it is nothing more than a cheap rip-off of The Hidden, made by New Line, trying to make money off another Jason Voorhees film. I wasn't sure it was possible to make a worse movie than Jason TAKES Manhattan, but they proved me wrong....twice. I can only Freddy vs. Jason will not suck so hard.
Respiro (2002)
An unexpected treat.
This is a wonderful movie. I had originally only gone to a screening because Valeria Golino was going to be answering questions after the film. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I hadn't heard anything about this film before I saw it. All I knew was that it was in Italian with subtitles. There is a very naturalistic quality to this movie. It doesn't even seem like you are watching people act, more like just watching these characters interact in daily life. The lovely Miss Golino informed us after the film that she was the only real actor on the island where it was filmed. There is some beautiful scenery in this movie. It was shot on the southern most island in Italy, I believe the name is Lampadura. The story revolves around the troubles facing Grazia in her village due to her being a free-spirit. While it isn't as straight-forward as some American films, it still has a good pace and keeps you entertained for the duration. Fine performances by a cast of people considering they had never acted before. While the average movie-goer may not like this flick, I recommend it to any fan of indy-films.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
ZOMBIE DELIVERS!
All hail Zombie. Let me start out by saying that I don't think I've ever waited this long to see a movie. I remember in April 99 when Universal had first announced it. I remember when they were shooting for Halloween release. I remember the battles of what needed to be cut. I remember when the trailer first appeared on the Pitch Black rental video in October of 2000. I remember the supposed release dates in January, April and October of 2001. I remember the track "House of 1000 corpses" on his Sinister Urge cd. I remember him showing a clip at the Merry Mayhem tour that December. I even remember jumping for joy when I heard in June 2002 that MGM might be picking it up. I was still optimistic when Zombie introduced his set at Ozzfest 02 with a trailer followed by "COMING THIS FALL." I was ecstatic when Lions Gate finally picked it up. That being said....I made sure I went to see it the first day it was out. Sadly, this film will not be a huge success. It is a film for true horror fans. I was so sick of the state of horror movies the past 3 years. Everything that came out was so watered down in order for it to be marketed to teen audiences. This movie is dark, disturbing, gory and depraved....and I loved every second of it. Sheri Moon is so fun to watch on screen. Karen Black, as true horror fans know from the TRILOGY OF TERROR, is great in her role. Bill Moseley has a great role. All the other actors do great in their roles. I can't wait to dress up as Captain Spaulding for Halloween. I love the way Zombie shot this movie. As soon as you start watching it, you know Zombie wrote and directed it. I'm also amazed at what he did with the sets considering he only had a reported $7 mil for a budget. I hope that he builds an actual "Captain Spaulding's museum of mayhem and murder." I also love the way he scored the movie. Zombie worked with Scott Humphrey, the producer of his two solo albums and it helps move the movie along, rather than just serving as background music. Zombie does everything right giving us a film that serves as a throwback to the golden age of horror, the pre-slasher era of the 1970s. This is the best horror film to come out since The Mothman Prophecies and easily one of the best horror films to come out in the past ten years.
Irréversible (2002)
The best film that will come out in 2003.
Barring some truly amazing film, and I fail to see none on the horizon, this is will be the best film of the year. Noe's camerawork is some of the best I've ever seen in a feature. Noe brings you straight into the action. The first half hour is shown at such a frantic, obsessive pace. The music is filled with anger and an impending sense of doom. As anyone who followed this movie knows, half the crowd at Cannes walked out after the screening started. I was further intrigued when I saw Monica Belucci defending the film while doing press for Tears of the Sun, saying "It is a difficult film to watch, but its important." The film really isn't all too violent, you're just assaulted with such graphic brutality at the beginning. If you can get past all the violence in the beginning, you should be fine. There is an amazing flow to this movie. A lot of the scenes are all one-take, one shot. Dialogue is entirely improvised. There was no shooting script. It's refreshing to see a film where you don't have a cut everytime a different character speaks. In other films, jumping coverage shots of each character in scene can take you out of the movie. The segues from scene-to-scene are ingenious. Noe keeps the music going throught the segues. This helps the film flow so well, it feels as if you're watching it almost in real-time. Great performances are turned on by Belluci and Cassels. You feel more empathetic for them as the movie goes on. A strong soundtrack also helps drive the narrative. The end shot is one of the most beautiful I've seen in a film in a long time. A must-see for all movie fans. A landmark in innovation and a gem of cinema.
Day of the Woman (1978)
A waste of celluloid.
this movie is god-awful. im a huge horror movie fan. and i had high hopes seeing as plenty of other horror buffs told me to check it out. how bad this is movie? i dont even know where to start. its a blatant rip-off of last house on the left. almost entirely. the entire movie is basically told on the back cover. there is no suspense at all. poor acting, poorly shot. when you're done with this movie, you want your money back. it should be banished to a far-away realm where no one should have to see it ever again. just go rent Last House On The Left...its obvious the director, writer, producer and rest of the crew did.
Possession (1981)
One horrible mess of celluloid.
This is awful. I bought this movie a long time ago, after hearing that the original U.S. version was cut by 40 minutes. Sounds good, right? Europeans are more open with sexuality, so it doesn't really come under harsh censorship. I finally watched it last night. One can't even describe how bad this movie is. I know that European horror movies don't always have a completely linear plot structure. I rather enjoyed The Blood-Spattered Bride. This is an entirely different realm. Possession is just a big two hour mess with no real point. Can someone please explain what the hell happened in this movie? I can't even remember the last time i was so disappointed in a movie...I love the work of Sam Neill. I liked everything else I had seen with him in it. This could possibly be the worst movie I have ever seen.
Chris Rock: Bigger & Blacker (1999)
HILARIOUS!
I'm a big fan of stand-up comedy, and this has to be one of the funniest I've ever seen. I must have seen this 50 times. And that is no exaggeration. Every time, I still laugh my ass. It's a toss-up, but I'd say that this is funnier than his first stand-up special, Bring the Pain. Please, Chris, do more stand-up.
The Rules of Attraction (2002)
My favorite movie to come out this year.
Let me start of by saying that when I first heard about The Rules of Attraction, it was the only movie scheduled to come out on October 11th. In fact, it is my opinion that if the market wasn't flooded with new movies coming out on the same day then this film would have been more successful. I heard about Avary's troubles with the MPAA over the content of this film and the more I heard the more I needed to see this movie. I loved this movie, and am eagerly awaiting its release on dvd. Not only, I will still have to see this at least one more time before it leaves theatres. It's rare to find a film actually worth the $9 for admission. Rumor has it the original cut was around 150 minutes. For the people who didn't like this movie, there are two reasons why. One, being you heard "American Psycho" and assumed this would be the same and two, you don't understand the concept of satire. I almost died laughing while watching this film. It opens up disturbingly, but there aren't more than 2 or 3 truly disturbing moments in the film. The rest of the movie is laugh-out-loud funny. I also thought the film was done very stylishly. I loved the way Roger Avary used the narrative and where he chose to put his camera. Avary has a difficult task telling the story with essentially three narrators and three different viewpoints. He pulls it off without a hitch using motion-capture and an innovative use of split screen. The music is also a strong point in the film. The narration combined with the music help make the movie play seamlessly. He also gets strong performances from his cast. James Van Der Beek is so good his role as Sean that you forget this is the same person who has been Dawson on the Wb for the past few tears. Jessica Biel also does good to shed her wholesome image from 7th heaven. Shannyn Sossamon and Ian Somerhalder also turn in great performances. I haven't seen any of their other work, but for me I will always draw them back to their roles as Lauren and Paul. The other roles in the movie are mostly cameos. Although only in it for a few minutes, I loved Kate Bosworth's part in the film. Thomas Ian Nicholas is also great in the role. At first, I hadn't even recognized him. I'd place this movie in the top 3 for the best movies of the year (right with Insomnia and Mothman Prophecies) and put it right up with my favorite movies of all time. When you see it, just allow yourself to get caught up in the story. And get ready to laugh.
The Mummy Returns (2001)
AVOID...YOU'LL THANK ME LATER.
The sequel is still god-awful, but there is one redeeming quality. There are a few impressive cgi scenes. Other than that, this is just a ploy to make money. The only reason this even made money was because they advertised the Rock as a star. And he clocks in with a whopping minute of screen time. Seeing as the only reason one could possibly have for seeing this is the cgi, I suggest you go see Final Fantasy.
The Mummy (1999)
NOT JUST AWFUL, BUT GOD-AWFUL.
This is one of the few movies I have ever seen that has absolutely no redeeming qualities. It's so bad that you can't even laugh at it, you just want it to be over. I'll break down like this, if you combined Evil Dead, Indiana Jones and Dumb and Dumber...but took out everything funny, forgot about at plot and cast the Encino Man, this is what you would have. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! WHATEVER YOU'RE FRIENDS TOLD YOU ABOUT THIS, THEY WERE WRONG. After watching this, you'll remember why you never saw it the first place.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994)
ONE OF CARPENTER'S BEST!!!
Being a huge horror movie fan, I am also a huge fan of John Carpenter. This movie is one of the best and also one of the last to come out in a great time for horror. Ever since Scream came out, it seems that most horror movies are more and more watered down so they can be marketed to a younger audience. This film was released a year before this disappointing trend arrived. Not only that, this is almost a forgotten gem and a link to the heyday of his career. Carpenter has always put out great work, but hasn't put anything out to rival his "platinum era." I call the time between 1978-1984 the platinum era, seeing as each one of his films from the era or masterpieces. Not only are they masterpieces in their own right, but it seems like each film gets better in its own way. It started with the beginning of the franchise/slasher era with Halloween. He followed up Halloween with the excellent ghost story that is The Fog. After The Fog he put out 4 more classics: Escape from New York, with the antihero Snake Plissken; The Thing, a landmark in special effects which could be argued to be the best film of his career; Christine, which gets my vote for best Stephen King adaption and coolest car; and the touching Starman, a sci-fi love story. After this his work was still golden, but had more of a b-movie feel to it. This included the camp classic They Live and the anthology Body Bags. In the Mouth of Madness displays the brilliance shown in the "platinum era." I don't want to spoil anything, but this is one of the better horror movies to come out in the past ten years. Of course, this didn't break any records at the box office. Not only did this come out in a time before horror became cool again, it was also a time when tickets were $5 for evening shows. Nevertheless, this movie is done well on all fronts. Carpenter knows how to make you jump out of your seat and presents some really unsettling visuals. I get a little more creeped out with each viewing. Sam Neill puts in a great performance, and Julie Carmen also does well in her supporting role. Another Carpenter score to perfectly compliment the movie. This movie is also shot very well, and boasts an excellent script. A must for all Carpenter fans and highly recommended to any fans new to the horror genre. Turn the lights down low and enjoy!
Insomnia (2002)
BEST FILM OF 2002 THUS FAR
I watch a lot of movies. This is the best well-done so far, and few will be able to come close. I loved Memento, so I know I had to go see this and see the magic that Christopher Nolan weaves. If I ran the Academy, this movie must win at least one award. I would give Best Picture with Best Director going to Peter Jackson for Lord of the Rings, the Two Towers. This is good on all fronts. An excellent script. A great crime drama, with a great "ah ha" moment. Oscar-worthy performances from Pacino and Williams, and a strong performance by Hillary Swank. They all give real performances, not the typical supercop type stuff. This film is also very beautifully shot. The backgrounds and landscape photography are breathtaking. Add on top of that a score that perfectly compliments the tone of the movie, and you have all the ingredients of a masterpiece. The film is so well directed. Nolan does a good job keeping the tension up throughout the movie all the way to the climax. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie.
Donnie Darko (2001)
I WAS BLOWN AWAY.
I don't know where to start with this movie. I knew nothing about this when I saw a copy of it at the store. I had heard it was good, so I decided to check it out. The movie opens with a perfect marriage of song and screen. We hear "The Killing Moon" from Echo and the Bunnymen while the camera just starts to set-up the environment. It will hook you from that point on. I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say that the film revolves around the life of Donnie Darko, a gifted but troubled adolescent. But this isn't like any other movie you may have seen before. It almost transcends labeling, containing elements of many different genres. A great soundtrack of 80's new wave combined with an amazing score compliment the film so well. Great performances all around and a brilliant script also make this movie a masterpiece. Drew Barrymore gives her best performance since E.T., and Jake Gyllenhaal shows his extraordinary talent for acting. After watching this, I would see a film solely on the basis of seeing his work of the craft. If this is Richard Kelly's film debut, I eagerly await his next film. Do yourself a favor and at least check it out. Then tell all your friends to do the same.

Resident Evil (2002)
AMAZINGLY WELL DONE!
I want to start off by saying that I was blown away by this movie. I am a big fan of horror movies. And seeing as most video game to movie adaptions are utter complete crap, I wasn't expecting too much from this movie. This movie grabbed my attention from the first frame and held it to the very end. I know what you're thinking...."Resident Evil a '10'?" Let me tell why this is is so well done. The games mostly focus on a company doing genetic experiments and create zombies. Mayhem ensues. The movie starts out telling you a little about the corporation. Not too much to make it a drawn-out scene, but to give enough to know what is going on. Anderson then makes a seamless transition from the intro right into the lab. The opening scene is done so well, without using a lot of dialogue and letting the music build up the tension. The score really makes the movie. A different score would have made this just another zombie flick, but Manson does his best work to date. (And I'm a big Manson fan who owns all his albums. I am eagerly awaiting his next release after hearing the Resident Evil theme.) The score starts with an ominous sound, followed by a creepy keyboard intro and a simple driving bass riff. As the song progresses, more and more tension builds as drums, guitar and the other sounds are added. This song is short, but works so well with the opening sequence in establishing the tone of the movie. Gothic, haunting and creepy all at the same time. Now about the other fronts. This isn't on the same level as some other movies. It isn't a brilliantly written script. The subject matter isn't very intellectual, but rather primal and savage. When making the judgment, you have to view the movie for what it is. A fun, gore-filled thrill ride. The actors don't do anything oscar-worthy, but they do portray their characters well. The make-up work IS oscar-worthy. While its not on the same level as something like Lord of the Rings, it is still quite amazing in its own right when seeing how many zombies they have to create. I would say the film is well-directed, seeing as the director did make an enthralling movie that kept me glued to my seat for the entire time. I don't think I've been so brought into the world of the film then with this movie. I also jumped at a few parts, which is doesn't happen often. This also has one of the best endings I've seen in a movie. So far, this is hands down the best horror movie I've seen in 2002, one of the best movies of 2002 and one of my favorite movies of the horror genre. I'd place right next to Night of the Living Dead, the other masterpiece. In fact, you could almost call this a modern version of the 1968 classic. Now, for the poor reviewers I have this to say. You probably didn't like this just because Romero didn't direct it. And while I consider Night a classic, I hated the other 2 movies in the Dead trilogy. And you can't say the movie didn't capture the spirit of the game. If anything, it captured it all to well. As with all movies, there are those who love and those who hate. My advice? Give this a try expecting nothing and just watch and enjoy the movie. You'll thank me later.
American Psycho II: All American Girl (2002)
Nowhere near as good as the original.
Let me start off by saying, if it wasn't for Mila Kunis I wouldn't have even bothered. I enjoyed the film somewhat. But this doesn't come close to the original. This movie resides somewhere in sequel hell. It has aspects of Exorcist 3, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, most Friday the 13th movies, and Crow: City of Angels. What aspects am I speaking of? Well, like Exorcist 3, it wouldn't have gotten funding without the American Psycho name. Like Crow: City of Angels, it isn't really a sequel but more like a spin-off almost of the first one. Like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, it takes a great classic powerful movie and almost strips it of all its power by simply being in existence although not to the great extent of the aforementioned Texas #2. And finally, like all Friday the 13th movies it follows the rule that continuity in sequels isn't necessary to start production. For those of you who didn't enjoy the first film, you obviously didn't get it. I got it. And I laughed my ass off from the first frame to the last. This film is different. I'm lured in by my lust for Mila Kunis and my hope that the American Psycho name is a good thing. The snappier parts of dialouge are well-written and well delivered. And did I mention Mila Kunis is really really hot? Other than that, this is like a cheap, watered-down B-movie version of American Psycho. It's worth checking out once. It is nowhere as near as rewatchable as the first film, but still enjoyable. But this is nowhere near the honor of best sequel ever. And for anyone who thinks the director gets more credit for shooting this movie fast...go check out the original Halloween and Evil Dead movies. Halloween was shot in 22 days and is infinitely better. And Sam Raimi does so much more with his budget than Carpenter did for Halloween. And those films were produced at a fraction of the cost of what cost to make this one.
American Psycho (2000)
If you didn't like this, you didn't get it.
I'm going to start off by saying that there seems to be no middle ground for this movie. You either loved it or hated it. I loved it. I wish more movies this good would come out. And this has got to be one of the most rewatchable movies ever. (meaning it is still great each and every time you watch it)I don't think there is anything I can say about this movie that hasn't been said. I laughed my ass off from the opening frame untill the credits. I GOT IT. If you failed to see the elements of humor all over the film, then you simply missed the point and didn't enjoy it at all. Overall, this is a masterpiece of cinema. Well-acted, well-written, and well-directed. If you haven't seen this, then you owe it to yourself to check it out. And if you get it, you'll laugh time and time again.
Les diaboliques (1955)
The greatest suspense thriller ever.
This movie is simply amazing on all fronts. It is in fact so amazing, you can't even comprehend how amazing it is until you watch it a 2nd time. Spend the 2nd time looking for plotholes, and then become frustrated when you don't find any. Bothered by the fact that film seems to move slow without a musical score? I was too at first. And then I realized how brilliant it it was. The lack of score helps to create greater tension, adding a Tell-Tale Heart quality to the story.(If you aren't familiar with the Edgar Allen Poe story of the same name, you must live under a rock. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.) The screenplay is airtight, not a single plothole. The acting is all top-notch. Extremely well-directed. If you thought this film was good, let me help persuade you towards my view. Think about when this was made, and think about the other films made at the time. This movie would stand-out as a great film today. The fact that it was made almost fifty (50, the big 5-0) years ago and you see that a true classic never goes out of style. The only reason I can think of anyone not loving this movie is they either can't appreciate a good film or are too closed-minded to watch a film that isn't in their own language. If you understand the intricacies of film-making, you will also realize how simply amazing this film is. Still not convinced? What if I tell you that Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock was heavily influenced by this film when making Psycho, which is regarded as in most circles as the greatest thriller of all time. H.G. Clouzout first employed the practice of not letting anyone into Diabolique after it started. And don't forget about the twist ending so commonly seen and overused in today's cinema. How many times have you seen a twist ending in a thriller? It all started with Diabolique. Do yourself a favor and check this film out. And do your friends a favor and tell them about this suspense masterpiece. Forget about the fact that it is in subtitles. Turn the lights off. ENJOY.
Lilo & Stitch (2002)
the best Disney movie ever
this is the best Disney movie ever. i am 20 years old, and i wanted to see this just because i thought Stitch looked so cool. and this movie delivered, and not in typical fashion. it fares better with the audience due its complete lack of musical numbers. don't get me wrong, i love Beauty and the Beast but i dont think every Disney cartoon needs 15 musical numbers. it is also funny all the way through and doesnt bleed to heavy on the sentiment. you can tell its a Disney film with a little bit of sentiment, but not too much to make it all gooey. Stitch is SO cool. the Lilo character is well-acted too. i personally love the way Disney is going with its animation. Lilo & Stitch, along with The Emperor's New Groove are setting a trend in Disney animation. DO NOT MISS THIS MOVIE!!!
Scooby-Doo (2002)
Don't Even Bother.....I Warned You
I am so disappointed in this movie I can't even put it into words. This is just a terrible, terrible movie. It isn't as bad as Changing Lanes, but it could give it a run for it's money. If not for my love the Scooby-Doo cartoon, I would have walked out after about 30 minutes. And I have never walked out of a movie in my life. The only other movie i was ever tempted to walk out of was Changing Lanes. This movie has what I like to call "Street Fighter Syndrome." What is Street Fighter Syndrome, you ask? I'll tell you. Street Fighter Syndrome is when developing a film of a popular staple of pop-culture and you take the time to cast people who look perfect as the characters, but don't give any thought at all to things such as plot, a good script, good directing and all that other unimportant stuff. (sarcasm) There are barely a handful of good things about this movie. The first 5 minutes are good, but it takes a nosedive soon after. Matthew Lilliard, Linda Cardellini, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and even Freddie Prinze Jr. are all good as Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred. The CG Scooby is even pretty impressive. Sarah Michelle Gellar looks very hot as Daphne. Even Velma is hot. Other than that, this movie has no possible redeeming values. The plot seems like it was written by Shaggy himself. You might like this if YOU'VE NEVER SEEN AN EPISODE OF THE CARTOON, you are a little kid, or you are like Shaggy himself. ("Mary Jane is like my favorite name of all time." A direct quote from the movie. I AM NOT LYING.) But if you were like me, someone who had high hopes after many hours spent watching the cartoons, I hate to burst your bubble. If you want to see a good, funny movie go see Undercover Brother.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
words cannot describe
i remember when i first saw this movie. i was blown away, and i still am every time i watch it. this is one of the most beautifully filmed movies ever. robbed at the oscars for best picture. this film transports you to another world. it is so breathtakingly shot. and lets not forget about the fights. these are the best fight scenes we may ever see in a movie. this is a true essential in any collection. to truly experience the film subtitles are needed, as this is more than just a kung fu movie. the actors all give performances so great its hard to think that they aren't their characters. if you dont like this movie, then you can not call yourself a movie fan.
Lola rennt (1998)
truly amazing
this is one of the coolest movies you will ever see. the story revolves around lola, who is trying to save her boyfriend manni, who needs $100,000 in twenty minutes or he will be in trouble with the mob. the cinematography keeps you enthralled from the opening frame and the music keeps you going throughout the movie. one of the best soundtracks of the 90's. in fact, the music and cinematography are so well done, you forget you're watching a foriegn language film. this will be tom twyker's crowning achievement and franka potente will always be remembered as lola.
