My Sister's Keeper (2009)
Extremely poignant, powerful and very, very emotional
I gave this movie a 10 because it's the first to ever make this 45 yr old father of a daughter cry. The acting is superb as is the script. The premise and storyline are quite excellent. This movie is so well done and with such a compelling and heart-wrenching story coupled with the superb acting of all the cast, particularly Cameron Diaz and Sofia Vassilieva, that both my wife and I were spellbound. Both of us could feel the emotions the family was experiencing as well as the heartbreak of watching your child die. We really felt like we were witnessing an intense family tragedy. I'm astounded this movie didn't win any Oscars, especially for the acting.
The Descent (2005)
Great scary movie!!!
My 16 year old daughter and I just finished watching this movie and we're both still a little shaken. I know she won't' sleep well tonight! This movie was developed around a terrific idea of cave exploring. The initial cave scenes alone had my anxiety meter up really high and I'm not claustrophobic! The rest, as one reviewer eluded to, is a roller coaster of thrills, terror, hope and praying for the characters. The acting is top notch, the setting is awesome and the pace of the movie was very good. You never felt bored. Mostly you feel suspense until the terror begins. This is not a bad "slash and gore" movie as I typically dislike those. It does have some gore but it's just enough to scare the daylights out of you! I only gave it an 8 because the ending was a bit lame. Some may say it was a good twist but I wouldn't agree. Anyway, I highly recommend it if you're looking for a good suspense, thriller, terror movie. See it in the dark (no lights!!!). See it with a date because you'll both want someone to hold onto!
Straight Into Darkness (2004)
One of the worst I've ever seen
I don't see how anyone could give this "gem" any good comments. Long, slow moving, drawn out storyline, barely visible plot, bad acting, absolutely pointless flashbacks/dream sequences. I could barely stand to watch the whole thing but I just had to see if ANYTHING would redeem this mess. The description on the CD case made it sound like a thriller on the edge of scary type of war movie. It wasn't sad, funny, scary or thrilling. It was just plain old boring. I haven't seen anything else by Jeff Burr but if this is the best he can do I'll avoid any of his other works like the plague! Save your money and rent something worthwhile, like Erasurehead.
