Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Downright Silly
Honestly this was a waste of time. But that seems to be the case with Amazon Prime, nowadays. If it's not lousy shows then they bait and switch by giving you a free season and make you pay for season 2, or try to get you to sign up with partner streamers with free trails. Kind of greedy considering how much money Amazon makes.
It's amazing what people will watch nowadays and consider worthwhile entertainment. This concept had some valid possibilities to explore but the production was jarringly told and the bulk of time was spent on gratuitous fight scenes rather than in actually telling a story. The only redeeming factor in the whole movie was Michelle Yeoh. I could probably sit through an hour of her making biscuits and gravy. 4 stars and that is only for Ms Yeoh.
Kaubôi bibappu: Cowboy Bebop (1998)
Never too old to like something new.
Before my grandson left for Air Force boot camp, he put some links for anime shows on my laptop. He made me promise to try anime as he knew I thought of anime as childish, so, I was stuck. What he gave me were links for Attack on Titan, Fairy Tail and Demon Slayer. After watching several episodes of each, I am thoroughly enthralled with the cleverness of the genre and the unique artwork & presentation. When I stumbled onto Cowboy Bebop on Netflix, I had to give it a try and have to say it gets a solid 9 from me; that only because some stories seemed a bit incomplete and the fact that there is only- one- season! Frankly I am surprise that anime, especially sci-fi, is not huge in the US. From a financial POV it makes sense. If you can tell a story, a bit tongue in cheek, without the huge location & high actor fees then you can create a lot for a little. The music lends another component of the experience and the mood. It seems to make the vision come alive & engrained in your mind like a good book. You've got to admire the artist's good taste in using the allure of the female physique in such a titillating but not over the top manner - love that youthful 'come hither' look. The theme is reminiscent of Archer, and the ending trumpet riff is memorable; actually, the entire score is well selected, unique and well performed. In the end, everything blends together in the artwork. I love the still shots that scroll down to a futuristic city with all the human detritus; I love the seedy underbelly it conveys. I vote that some enterprising individual, somewhere, pick it up and do another 50 episodes. Make them 45 minutes, please.
Hollywood Squares (1998)
It deserves a lot higher than 5 stars.
Maybe the lack or voters is an indicator that long time viewers didn't vote. For a game show, it wasn't too big of a deal but the personalities were the attraction: Charlie Weaver, Rich Little, Paul Lynde, Buddy Hackett, Foster Brooks, Joan Rivers, Wayland and Madame to name a few. The celebrity and the answers were what made the show. I'd watch the early years again and definitely give it at least 8.5 stars.
