A Boy Called Christmas (2021)
Good Potential Lost
Enjoyed the movie until half way through, then things stop making sense.
Why did the elves stop celebrating Christmas because of a bad encounter with a few humans? Humans don't even know what Christmas is? Why did one bad human group lead to the elves changing their entire culture to be authoritarian and sad? If it was hard for Nick to see the city how did a bunch of old men with no imagination find it? Or was it not hidden before? And if it's now hidden, problem solved? Why does head lady elf allow no more fun?
Why was the fairy in jail? Why was Nick put with her and a troll? How did she get all those fireworks in "jail?" Why does she go from actively trying to get him eaten by a troll to being someone he can't leave behind?
The elves' son is returned and a toy reward is offered. Why does Nick decide now that all these elves should make toys for him for free and that they have to meet a deadline? At this point, Christmas has not been explained to him - no date, hardly anything beyond general astonishment that he doesn't know what it is.
Why is the king, made out to be a king who does nothing actually good for the benefit of his people, get to be a good guy in the end? The movie jokes that healthcare and working wages would help the people but he's like, naw we need "hope." And in the end, HE'S RIGHT? They need one day a year of getting TOYS? And that's IT?
Many more questions beyond this, but truly was left confused at the end of this movie. First half had intrigue followed by confusion.
