House of the Dragon (2022)
It's like one subplot of GOT
Compared to the predecessor show, House of the Dragon is a very narrow story. I don't know that it would be my favorite subplot in an epic and grand GOT-like show, but it wouldn't be my least favorite either. It's a fairly interesting palace intrigue tale and handsomely set up.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Horror Movie with Depth
Loved the humanity with which the villains were written and portrayed, without saying they were less than evil. MVP to Rebecca Ferguson! And we all knew Danny couldn't possibly grow up without problems which Ewan MacGregor plays that beautifully. The one weak link in the movie for me was was the lack of chemistry between Danny and Abra.
Dracula (2020)
Very Loosely Based on Bram Stoker's Dracula
I can understand expecting to watch a version of the classic story, seeing this and feeling upset but that does not make Dracula (2020) a bad movie. It is in fact, a very good one. Original, sometimes scary and w with a terrific wry sense of humor, the movie features familiar Dracula characters whose storylines are necessarily altered but never in a lesser way. There are also numerous supporting characters who are on briefly or frankly, as bodycount, but which are never given the cardboard treatment, rather, as time allows, they are presented as individuals.
The third act of the mini-series has a dreaded time-jump (way overused in current TV and movies) and is my least favorite but it is fine, the movie is not ruined or anything.
Breaking Bad (2008)
The Benchmark of television storytelling
Three re-watches later and it still provokes a lot of feelings. I still feel the tension as season 5 unfurls and my heart still breaks three or four times even though I know the story so well by now. To mix it up a little, "Best Lists" sometimes rank BrBa as #2 or #3 or #4 but nah, this is the benchmark.
Le Bazar de la Charité (2019)
Looks Great, Sounds Terrible
Costumes and setting are sumptuous but the dubbing into English I think must lose something in translation because the conversations leaned stilted. The word choices sounded like bad machine translation.
As far as the story, the first episode is really the best, the fire sequences are great and the introduction of the three main protagonist characters, whose lives are about to become intertwined/changed, is a good hook. Subsequently, the story gets less tight and more melodramatic, making it more talky which made the terrible dubbing really grating.
