Don Verdean (2015)
Funnier if you're ex religious.
Unless you grew up in the American evangelical cult you won't get the humor and ridiculousness of this film. So much of what these people say and how they behave and reason is in fact too close to the truth. So I can see why outsiders looking in would be bored or not get it. You just can't make some of this stuff up, the delusion is very real 😂 my ex church legit built a "tabernacle tent" for seasonal "biblical" experiences and even purchased "fragments" of the "bible" to line their halls.
I See You (2019)
Finally. A creative mystery thriller
I'm a huge thriller/mystery fan. But I'm super picky and critical about what I like. First off. Don't let the negative obsession with Helen hunts face reviews get in the way of enjoying this film. So what, she's aging how she chose to. That's not why we're here. This hugely underrated film I've never heard of deserves way more attention and recognition than the likes of "parasite". That film is a joke over all the attention it got. However the acting, production, screen writing, creative multi layered plot and right down to the score all check the boxes for me! No wasted time to get the story going either. No stupid side romance plots. Just enough information to throw you off and then guide you into what's really going on. And not overly jumpy to make it more realistic to connect to the true story unfolding. It's been a while since we had a good one. I highly recommend.
Absurd Planet (2020)
What the actual heck Netflix?!
I had been wanting to watch this since I knew based off the title this wasn't going to be a typical nature show about typical animals.
It wasn't the Mother Nature narrator that got me. It was the stupid long dung beetle song that assaulted my brain, I held on only for my brain cells to continue being assaulted by idiotic voice overs that added nothing funny to the educational aspect. It infuriated me more than anything. I stared at my tv after the first episode, put on Our Planet and felt way better. What a waste of beautiful footage and information. They should have just left the original narrator and it would have been fine!
Carnival Row (2019)
Ignore the "political" whiners.
Yes this show will drop you in a Victorian fantasyland. And yes it will place you in a world dealing with similar issues we unfortunately still struggle with.
For those made uncomfortable with that you need to check in with why you're irritated with being reminded through story telling about our own current affairs.
Great story telling will give you something to consider and think about that just may parallel someone else's reality but through a fantasy story. God forbid you have think anymore when you watch something.
Star Wars is what would have been the space "cowboys and Indians" of the day. And Lord of the rings WW1 and WW11 (battle of the 5 armies) dwarfs hate elves, nobody trusts human men or respects hobbits... etc. I don't hear anyone whining about those classics? Literally every story has a different perspective to offer us, that is the beauty of creative writing and art. To help us see our world in another world or to escape it.
The more I read about "millennial, leftist, immigration" referenced frustration and discomfort the more I believe we are on track to yes "throw it in your face" that the current world and thought is no longer acceptable and it's not political. It's relative to the history of humanity itself. Now let's move on and change the narrative so we don't need to tell tales like this to relate to anymore...
I gave it 9 stars because I think some lead casting could have been stronger. Like maybe not cast a super model with a struggling fake accent when there's so many other more capable actresses. Her pix friend could have been the perfect lead.
